About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bicycle licenses?

www.houstonchronicle.com

The editorial, “Pedaling forward” (Page A12, Thursday) pointed out a lot of ways that would make bicycling safer but only when motorists give up a lot of the road. I have a great deal of respect for people who ride bicycles, especially those who choose to ride to work, but there are also those riders who ride on the sidewalk, who disregard traffic signs and lights, who do not warrant that …

Simply on a Bike: the Southern Tier

By David Dalley | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Rye Texas to Merryville Louisiana
Friday March 10, 2017, 95 miles (153 km) – Total so far: 1,987 miles (3,198 km)
I did 95 miles today! That is the longest ride of my so-called career. It wasn’t all that difficult because there was no wind and the contour was level. All I had to do was to keep on keeping on. Because the journey today was so undifferentiated it naturally let me enter a very meditative state watching in and out breaths and paying as much attention to the debris on the road and the passing noisy trucks as I would see the passing thoughts in meditation. I can stay in that mode for a long time and be happy in this ride.
A bit of my goal today was to finish Texas. I actually liked Texas. It is just too big. One does like to …

Overcast Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

An overcast sky wasn’t enough to keep me from bicycling today. I need to get more rides in to accomplish my mileage goal for March. Selecting the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route I biked 34.58 miles increasing my month to date to 136.72 miles, 23% of my goal. I started a little earlier than usual for a weekday bike ride at 11:06 and finished at 1:35. I wanted to bicycle earlier to avoid the potential rain later in the afternoon.

Biking went as planned though the 7 mph east wind required some extra effort whenever the terrain exposed me to the wind. No other bicyclists crossed my route.

As I was riding west from Huffman an Atascocita ambulance with flashing lights raced to the east over Lake Houston. Not too far behind was an Atascocita fire truck with lights flashing. I didn’t know where they were headed but earlier at the railroad crossing at FM 2100 and FM 1960 a construction crew had the right hand lane closed. Traffic was backed up on FM 2100. I hope someone didn’t try to get through the construction zone and have an accident. As I rode west on FM 1960 before the Houston Fire Station I heard a train going east. This was before the ambulance and fire truck came. I hope it wasn’t involved.

March weather continues to be unfriendly to biking. Saturday might have rain but maybe I can ride before it arrives. Later in the day a “cool” front should pass through dropping Sunday’s temperatures into the 50’s.
