About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Roller Blades Without a Shirt Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2017

I debated about wearing leg warmers today and ended up wearing them along with a long sleeve thermal jersey and windbreaker jacket. I needed them all because I am a temperature wimp. Although the wind was only 8 mph from the SE it had a chill to it that cut through the jacket and jersey but not the leg warmers. Leaving at 12:52 I hoped the warmer part of the day was ahead but the temperature didn’t really change much during the bike ride along the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route. My legs need more pedal time but today’s 34.71 miles is headed in the right direction. So far March is up to 207.15 miles towards my 586 mile goal. Just to compare my wimpy weather sense near the end of the ride as I crossed Kingwood Drive a young man on roller blades was without a shirt (no shivers that I could see) while I was bundled up.

The wind battled me until the 21 mile point as I turned north onto FM 2100. By then the clear blue sky had gained a few scattered puffs of clouds and when the sun went behind one I could feel an increase in the wind chill. From that point the wind was mostly behind helping me get home quicker. No rest stops today since I didn’t want to take a chance of cooling off and being damp when I started riding again. I wasn’t overheated and had energy to keep pedaling.

I was the long biker on the route and spring break meant no school traffic.

With 16 potential bike ride days left I will need to be bicycling most of those to reach my mileage goal. I will not bike tomorrow but from then on the weather forecast looks warmer and rain is not a big problem.

So I checked out the Odessa Mountain Bike Park and it’s pretty awesome

by shankr3 | forums.mtbr.com

I’m out here in West TX filling in for a company while they hire extra local help so I figured I’d bring my bike after a quick internet search showed there was an MTB park in Odessa.
It’s only a few miles from the Warehouse I’m working out of and I had time to head over there yesterday afternoon. I had to buy a helmet as it’s required (as well as a 25/year membership to the Permian Basin Bicycle Association) but soon realized that the helmet was necessary due to terrain and will be …

Bastrop/Smithville, Texas
March 11, 2017
Registration time. The weather was iffy as rain was forecast throughout the day. And it was a little chilly.
Unfortunately for the tour director, a lot of riders failed to show due to the weather forecast. Instead of distance–24, 40, 70 miles–we were lined up by projected speed. So if you were an 18+ mph average …

Day 17 Texas: Deridder – Silsbee, Texas

Tuesday March 14, 2017, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,061 miles (1,708 km)
The coldest night so far, just as well the blankets we had were of great use. After the initial shock of departing in temperature, s lower than back home, we ploughed on.
The sun was out today which made for pleasant riding. At 20 miles a layer could be peeled off, a dog outside a store wanted a fuss made of him. A dog being friendly? Never. Yes it’s true.
At Merryfield and 25 miles into the day it had warmed up considerably, into a chicken shack for food, sadly no coffee have to …

Tyler seeks grant to add bike lanes, make it easier for commuter bicyclists to ride safely

by FAITH HARPER | www.tylerpaper.com

If selected, the grant would pay for 80 percent of construction costs, but would not cover any engineering fees or right of way acquisition. Officials estimated the grant would require a $230,000 match, plus another $150,000 in non-eligible costs – for a total of $380,000 of local money needed for the project.
Eng said Tyler has 25 miles of designated bike routes, but only five miles have designated bike lanes.
The city doesn’t have a formal plan for the grant funds yet, but will be developing it through the …

Thermal Jersey and 20,000 Miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 14, 2017 by Rick AnkrumMarch 14, 2017

With today’s bike ride my Stradalli Red Pro 14 bike passed 20,000 miles. This happened while I rode the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route for a total of 35.72 miles. March has been a slow riding month with only 5 bike rides so far. The weather has contributed to some of the off bike time and my schedule some to. You would think being retired all I have to do is biking but life throws other things in the mix too. One day to replace the back door on the house, another day going to the medical center and then miscellaneous chores around.

Today I got a late start leaving at 1:46; thank goodness for daylight savings time. My wife’s sister and brother-in-law and niece came to visit and I waited for them to arrive. Also the weather was slow to warm up to the 60’s due to a cool front passing through last night. It was 40 degrees when I got this morning. I am waiting for the 80 to 90 degree days to get here. The wind had a bite to it so I loaded up with leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, short sleeve jersey and windbreaker jacket. I probably could’ve left the short sleeve jersey at home since I perspired through to the jacket. When I finished the bike ride at 4:20 the clear blue sky was still with me. Fortunately the south 4 mph breeze did not increase the wind chill.

No other serious bicyclists along the route today. Maybe the chill kept them off the roads.

Another cold night and then Wednesday weather should repeat today’s. I plan on biking but the high is supposed to “only” reach 70; another thermal jersey and jacket ride.
