About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New Trail Sections at Walnut Creek – stitched together

Austin Bike | www.bikemojo.com

In the last 2 weeks we have figured out how to get the new trail sections joined together into a route that flows. In the past everyone had generally followed the “race loop” which has been a long-standing route. Most people rode everything in one direction even though everything at WC is bi-directional. By reversing the Lop Loop directions you can actually put it all together nicely. Numbers align to points listed below:

How to convert a Shimano 2×10 into 1×10 using RaceFace Narrow Wide Chain ring

Mountain Biking Texas | mountainbikingtexas.blogspot.com

After riding many different trails for some time, I noticed that I mostly ended up using my small chain ring and some times the large chain ring on the flats. My 2x crankset up is a 24T/38T, so I wanted to get one chain ring some where in between my current set up but large enough where I could still have some speed on the flats but not burn my legs on the climbs. So I did a lot of research and ended up going with a 32T RaceFace Narrow Wide chain ring. After reading a lot of forums, it seemed most people went with a 34 if they were not doing a lot of climbs and a 32T if they …

by Thomas | steinerranchcycling.com

Do you feel it is almost time for some cycling related social event? Got any ideas for next weekend, maybe the 18th or 19th? BCycle rentals and club rides in our kits down town with food and beer? Water cycle rentals and races on town lake? Any other ideas? I would really appreciate some help here in organizing something for that weekend.

Southern Tier with my sons

By Jack Nace | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Introduction: small window of opportunity
Tuesday February 7, 2017
A couple of years ago I drove by a guy in New Hampshire whose bike was loaded down with gear. I said to my wife, ” I bet that guy is going across the country”. I turned the car around and met up with him at a local deli. He told me he was biking to Seattle and that was my introduction to the ACA Northern Tier route. He gave me his card to follow him on crazyguyonabike and I was hooked. Since I love cycling and hate the cold, what better way to enjoy the winter than to ride the Southern Tier? While planning, my 2 sons came and told me that they would …

Unsafe streets

Houston Chronicle | www.houstonchronicle.com

Houston continues to build a car-centric city that is dangerous by design.

BEEEEEEP
The wailing horn of a Metro light rail train is supposed to shock pedestrians and drivers to attention as they cross into the path of danger.
Consider this editorial a warning for Metro.
Two cyclists were killed by the light rail over the past week, adding to the system’s already embarrassingly high collision rate. Our 23-mile system has more collisions per mile between trains and pedestrians or bikes than any other major line in the nation, Houston Chronicle reporter Dug Begley wrote Monday.
All that Metro can …

Central Austin seems to have everything: a massive research university, the world’s biggest annual media festival and one of the country’s strongest local job-creation engines.

Burma Road

Pedal Pushers | roy-pedalpushers.blogspot.com

San Angelo, Texas
February 7, 2017
I had been wanting to try out the Giant on Burma Road, one of our local signature rides because of the constant rolling hills with some worthy challenges. Bob and John were visiting from Minnesota. The previous day we road on of our relatively “tame” routes to Knickerbocker and Guinn Road. Knickerbocker has one good climb and Guinn Road has rolling hills. So, we decided to try out Burma as it would show off our different terrain in and around San Angelo. …

Remembered Sunscreen Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 8, 2017 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 8, 2017

Another short sleeve jersey bike ride day and I remembered the sunscreen on my arms. I started a little earlier than usual (11:02) bicycling the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. Riding north I made great time averaging 15.5 mph when I made the turn around at SH 242. Then the tailwind became my enemy. The temperature was 82 to 85 when I finished the ride at 1:16 which was great but that wind was from the west at 14 mph gusting to 18 mph. My legs bogged down whenever the windbreak to my right vanished. I did notice the concrete guardrail on the bridge over Caney Creek was high enough to block the wind better than the trees and buildings set back from the road. South of Roman Forest Blvd. biking south there are some tall mounds of dirt and these blocked some wind.

From the 15.5 mph average speed at SH 242 it starting dropping and ended up at 15.1 mph at the Kingwood Drive u-turn. I was surprised it didn’t fall further given how slow I seemed to riding. After yesterday’s ride I thought my legs would be too tired to handle more wind but they recovered overnight.

All of this warm weather and sunshine will spoil me. I am thinking early May weather but the calendar says it is early February. A mild cool front is supposed to move through this afternoon and evening with tomorrow’s high in the low 70’s or high 60’s. But by Saturday 80’s will be back in time for the Humble Lions Club Bike Ride.

Today I cycled 31.35 miles boosting February to 176.75 miles, 51% of my 345 mile goal. Year to date I am 9% of my 6,800 mile goal.

Depending on how the cool front affects the weather will determine if I bicycle tomorrow. This could be the most miles in a week so far this year.
