About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Azaleas Blooming Early Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2017 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 7, 2017

I must’ve been mesmerized by the 83 degrees when I started the bike ride on the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route today. Maybe for the first time this year I didn’t wear a long sleeve jersey or jacket and I forgot to put sunscreen on my arms although I put it on my face. Today’s bike ride displaced yesterday’s as the second longest coming in at 39.5 miles. I saw one other bicyclist along the ride today so I wasn’t alone taking in the great biking weather.

The warm temperatures have triggered the azalea plants to start blooming. I saw several plants in full bloom which is about a month early. It looks like the warm weather will be hanging around for awhile. According to Space City Weather commentary today: “After Houston reached 81 degrees on Monday (tying a record high set in 1911), the city has now recorded 12 days with high temperatures of 80 degrees, or warmer, this winter. According to the National Weather Service, the record for total number of 80-degree days in “winter,” defined here as December through February, is 17, which has happened three times (1995-96, 1956-57, & 1910-11). We’re likely to pick up at least two more 80-degree days this week, so that will put us at 14. I’d give us even odds of breaking the overall mark.” Great for biking but unusual for February.

Wind was my big problem on today’s ride. The wind was from the W at 7 mph but my legs pedaled like it was 25 mph. I rode okay as long as it wasn’t into the wind. The worst section started when I reached the May Community Center and left onto Wolf Road. The legs bogged down like a truck starting out in 4th gear. My average speed went from 15 mph to 13.4 mph when I took a short break at the Huffman Chevron. This was the first rest stop there this year. I ate a Clif bar hoping for some magical energy to power me west on FM 1960 into the wind. The magical power must’ve been somewhere else because leaving the Chevron station the max speed my legs produced was 16 or 17 mph for short bursts.

Relief should have come turning onto Atascocita Shores Drive biking north to northwest but the wind moved too, or so it felt. It was a struggle all the way home getting there at 2:53 with very tired legs. The ride started at 11:54 with more promise from the warm weather. Maybe biking three days in a row this early in the year is asking too much for average speeds higher than that.

Even with the maxed out legs I am at 42% of February’s mileage goal of 345 miles. 21 days remain though I probably won’t ride every one so the goal is within reach. The weather continues tomorrow (Wednesday) and I plan on bicycling.

For Houston, “winter” is probably over Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 6, 2017 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 6, 2017

Warm weather (81 degrees at the 3:07 PM finish) continues and I was back on the bicycle for a bike ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route for the first time this year. This is the second longest ride this year at 38.39 miles but this Saturday I plan on increasing the longest ride mileage to around 55 miles when I bicycle the Humble Lions Club bike ride, provide I don’t get lost as in previous years.

I made good time and pace on the way north to Roman Forest Blvd. thanks to a strong tailwind but riding east on Roman Forest Blvd for the “loop” portion of the ride the wind wasn’t as friendly. My pace slowed down considerably up the small incline on Roman Forest Blvd before I made the right turn onto Magnolia Bend. Biking on Magnolia Bend was somewhat easier thanks to the change in direction, trees and the houses lining the street. Passing by the school construction site I still cannot determine what grades the building will be. Previously I guess it would be a middle school but looking at the building it looks more like an elementary school.

Leaving home at 12:19 I wondered if I might ride through school dismissal traffic but I managed to avoid that except at the Kings Manor school but the left lane was clear and bicycling in that lane I passed the school buses and cars waiting for the students.

The Space City Weather daily newsletter today said they are starting to feel comfortable that the last frost for the Houston area is behind us.

“For most of central and southern Houston and Harris County, the average last freeze date falls in mid-February. It’s not going to freeze again before then, and by extension I’d be confident in planting from here on forward. For areas north of there, including Montgomery County, the freeze date is generally later, in the latter part of February or early March. Even so, I’d bet the chances of another freeze for the greater Houston metro area this year, including areas like Montgomery County, is now significantly less than 50 percent. …”

I like this news. It could be warmer tomorrow (Tuesday).

Nothing unusual on today’s bike ride except for the strong south wind at 18 mph and 25 mph gusts. No wonder my pedaling was much hard when I rode south from Roman Forest. I was beginning to think my legs were shot.
