About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

At Muleshoe Bend, avoid crowds when you hit the mountain bike trails

by Pam LeBlanc | digital.olivesoftware.com

Park’s nearly 10 miles of rugged trails twist over dirt and up and down rocky ledges.
Sometimes the best mountain biking trails in Austin feel a little like MoPac during rush hour.
Cyclists throng the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the trails at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park and my personal favorite, the Slaughter Creek Trail, where I once took a slow-motion digger on a limestone ledge that sent me …

White Oak Bayou Greenway steps blocked until fix installed

By Dug Begley | www.chron.com

Crews have blocked a pathway offering a vista of downtown Houston along the new White Oak Bayou Greenway, after concerns were raised cyclists could mistake the route for a bike ramp.
The small path where the White Oak Bayou Greenway crosses the Heights Hike and Bike Trail ends in three steep flights of stairs. Though the steps and a small overlook offer a great view of the Houston skyline, they pose a big danger for bicycle riders who often zip along the trails.
Orange construction fencing was stretched across the path’s entry this weekend.

Some Gooey Greenbelt Trails Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 12, 2016 by Rick AnkrumDecember 12, 2016

I was back on the MTB bike today though the overcast sky didn’t make the weather too inviting. The temperature was in the low 70’s but the humidity was around 80% making the trail damp and gooey in places. The route I rode came together as I rode but I stayed on the Kingwood Greenbelt trails mostly. The bike ride totaled 19.34 miles. I left home at 12:43 and returned at 2:26. At the end of the ride I washed the Motobecane 700HT to remove the dirt (not so much) and some built up stuff that bugged me when I noticed while riding.

With today’s ride I am inching towards my 130 mile goal for December. This SportTracks slide shows where I stand for the month and year. The SportTracks year data is about 33 miles less than Gamin Connect data; I think there is a small difference in the way the two programs calculate mileage from the GPS data.

Not many people were out on the trails. One other biker passed me as I rode north on the trail along side of W. Lake Houston Parkway as it cross Ben’s Branch bayou. Before that I detoured around construction workers at Kings River Drive and W. Lake Houston Parkway south of the bridge over the San Jacinto River. It looked like they were cutting the concrete to lay conduit for traffic light signals. The first time through the work area there weren’t any signs on the greenbelt warning of the work but on the return loop a man was putting up a barrier as I came around the corner.

While riding north on W. Lake Houston Parkway I noticed the speed showing on my Elemnt computer dropped 5 to 7 mph whenever a car drove by. I used to have this problem on my Stradalli road bike until I change the speed and cadence sensors from Gramin to Wahoo ones. I moved the Garmin sensors to the Motobecane 700HT MTB and it appears the problem came with them. I don’t know if this is a big enough issue to warrant spending $60 for the Wahoo sensors but it bugs me.

The trail route I rode went to the new greenbelt underpass on W. Lake Houston Parkway and this time I took these pictures.

I thought the road above the underpass was open to traffic but I saw the northbound traffic on the other two lane side of W. Lake Houston Parkway. Several workmen moved around the construction area on the roadway.

There is a small chance of rain tomorrow morning but I hope to go out on my road bike.

DALLAS — Need a book? Well, there’s always the public library, or even free little libraries. Or if you’re on the run, what about the bookmobile?
“We don’t have a bookmobile anymore,” said Dallas Public Library Director Jo Giudice. “We ceased our bookmobile service in October because it’s just so cost prohibitive. And it’s so big! We couldn’t get into the neighborhoods.”
So what’s the answer to peddling books on the street?

A Year After Tornadoes Ripped Through Garland and Rowlett, Volunteers Return to Plant Trees

By Alaena Hostetter | www.dallasobserver.com

On the night of Dec. 26, 2015, nine tornadoes ripped through Dallas’ eastern suburbs and leveled houses and schools, overturned vehicles and uprooted half-century old trees. In the hardest hit areas, Garland and Rowlett, parts of communities were destroyed, 13 people were killed and thousands of homes were damaged.
