About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

100 Degrees 5 Days in a Row and Bike Riding In It

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2016

My late start (11:41) meant the weather had time to warm up but the overcast sky held the temperature below 90 at the beginning. When I reached the Huffman Chevron station for a break at 1:12 the clouds broke up and the sky came through bumping the temperature up to 94. By the time I finished the ride at 2:37 it was up to 98. Officially Houston has had 5 days in a row at 100 degrees but I don’t know if it will make it today. If it misses it won’t be by far. The late start came about because I watched stage 2 of the Arctic Race of Norway where it was cool enough that the racers wore arm warmers.

I saw another biker early in the ride in Kingwood near Kingwood High School and later I saw another but I can’t remember where. I rode the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for a total of 32.38 miles pushing the week’s total to 203 miles and the month to 408 miles, leaving 392 miles to reach my goal for the month.

When I arrived at the Huffman Chevron one of the ladies came to the door to tell me the blue PowerAde fountain drink was back in service. I thanked her and got a 32 oz drink to go with the snack crackers and Clif bar. The shade and cold drink helped cool me down and slowly the sweat stopped running down my arms. A number of paper towels were needed to soak up all of the water.

8-12-2016 Huffman Chevron
8-12-2016 Huffman Weather

While I was enjoying the shade and food I heard the Amtrak train whistle around 1:25. A few seconds later the train swooshed through Huffman. It appears the train is now  back to using this track on a regular basis. I left the Chevron around 2:15 riding west on FM1960. The wind from the SW provided some resistance but I held my speed around 16 to 17 mph which helped increase my overall average speed to 14.5 mph.

I am not biking tomorrow and Sunday weather looks like rain. Two days off the bike is a good idea.

Checking the National Bike Challenge Leaderboard I am ranked 198th not including today’s ride. Not bad!

Red Faded to Pink Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2016

In contrast to the Texas weather today before I left on my ride I watched the Arctic Race of Norway on cycling.tv where it was cooler and near the end of the stage wetter. I started biking at 11:18 with the temperature in the low 90’s but as I progressed on the “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route I could feel it getting hotter. When I finished the and walked into the house I checked my home weather station and saw 101 degrees at 2:52. Supposedly this weekend some rain will be nearby and the temperature will drop a few degrees. Today I biked 39.27 miles pushing the week’s total to 171 miles and the monthly total to 374 miles. My goal is 800 miles for August.

I retired a pair of red gloves today due to part of them fading to pink. The Texas sun is hard on red gloves and I haven’t found a pair that survives the whole summer. Here is a comparison of the old (left) and the new (right).

The route took me past several schools and the parking lots now have cars in them as the teachers get ready for the first day back on August 22nd. I will need to alter my riding then to avoid the traffic from parents and school buses.

I stopped at the Porter Stripes station for a rest break arriving at 1:25 and leaving at 2:00. A large Gatorade, Clif bar and snack crackers helped me to re-energize for the rest of the ride. Sitting in the shade by the pumps the gentle breeze felt great evaporating some of the sweat the paper towels didn’t. This was 28.2 miles into the ride.

8-11-2016 Porter Stripes
8-11-2016 Porter Weather

The light breeze was from the west according to the large flag at the Valley Ranch entrance. This helped make the 11+ miles to the finish easier most of the time. With four days of riding a total of 171 miles the legs are not as zippy near the end of the ride. Tomorrow I will ride a shorter route to reach 200 miles for the week. Saturday is a no ride day and Sunday I will probably ride my MTB on the Kingwood trails if it isn’t raining.
