About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

NWCC junior cyclists uphold tradition

The emergence this year of Lawson Craddock as the first cyclist from the Houston area – and the only native Texan other than Lance Armstrong – to start a Tour de France recently placed a bit of spotlight on the Northwest Cycling Club junior team.
Craddock, 24, got his first taste of cycling with the NWCC juniors and today serves as an …

Ride Interview- Hotter’N Hell Hundred- Wichita Falls, Texas

By Jennifer Jones

www.wheelbrothers.com

Hotter’N Hell Hundred… the name alone says a great deal about what you’re getting into. However, this 100 mile Endurance Ride is only part of a much bigger picture.
Recently, I was able to speak with the Executive Director of Hotter’N Hell Hundred, Ben ”Chip” Filer, and the Executive Director for Wichita Falls Streams and Valleys, Sandy Fleming. Wichita Falls Streams and Valleys hosts the off road events that are included in the weekend.
They are smack in the middle of planning mode and are quickly getting the final details squared away for the event. Many people are aware of the …

Local Radio Show Suggests “Buzzing” Cyclists

by Jarrett2

www.bikeforums.net

There is a radio station in the DFW area called “The FAN” (105.3 FM). Their phone number is: 214-525-7000. Tuesday night, on the show called “K&C Masterpiece,” Kevin & Colby thought it would be funny to say cyclists shouldn’t be allowed on the roads and it would be okay to buzz them and if something happened it’s their fault. The segment happened between 9:15 – 9:20pm.
They continue to joke about it on their Facebook page today: …

Bike Ride Passing Through the Spot A Bicyclist Died

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 10, 2016

Yesterday a bicyclist was killed on FM1960 in Huffman. My ride today took me to Huffman on the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route. My wife was concerned that I was biking in the area but I assured her I have biked there many times. Traffic has always been considerate of me and I haven’t had any problems. I passed through the accident area after I left the Huffman Chevron on the way back to Kingwood. I looked for evidence of the tragedy but I could find anything. The bicyclist has not been identified as I write this. I prayed for the driver and the family of the biker.

According to a weather blog I follow the peak of summer is this week in our area. The weather is delivering with heat indexes at 110+ and sunny days. The light wind doesn’t offer much relief in the shade. It was 97 degrees when I got home after biking and the heat index was 111. Thanks to the light breeze I was able to ride at 18 to 19 mph during the ride on FM1960 to the Liberty County line. What it looked like at the Liberty County line.

I believe the 704 on the FM1960 road sign pole is the miles from the sign to the west most point in Texas. My riding in Liberty County was short, I crossed the line and rode to the west bound shoulder back into Harris County. From this point I rode west turning onto Huffman – Eastgate Raod to ride by Hargrave High School on the way to the May Community Center on Wolf Road. I stopped there to refill my water bottle for the 4 mile ride to the Huffman Chevron where I took a rest break.

Arriving at the Chevron station at 1:33 after biking 27.8 miles out of the total 39.14 miles I rode today. The weather while I was resting shows the heat and lack of a breeze.

8-10-2016 Huffman Chevron
8-10-2016 Huffman Weather

The Chevron was still out of the blue PowerAde fountain drink so I sat down in the shade and drank ice water from my bottle while I eating the Clif bar and snack crackers I brought with me. As I was sitting there a few people commented on how hot it was to be biking. I agreed but said it was better when I was moving. I left the station about 2:10 to finish the ride to Kingwood. I finished the ride at 2:56 relieved to go inside where it was cooler.

I started the ride later than I wanted to (11:25) because technology continued to fail. My home weather station is still off line, Quicken cannot download from my back because the bank’s computer system had a problem yesterday and trying to talk to someone took a long time on hold. Tomorrow must be better.

Rough Road on SH 242 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2016 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2016

Today’s ride was on the “SR242 – FM1314” route. I wanted to ride 40+ miles and ended up riding 48.04 miles. I forgot the last time I rode (7/11/2016) this route that SH 242 was being resurfaced west of FM1485. As I crossed FM1485 I was hoping the work was done or advanced enough that the shoulder would not be the very rough one. At first the shoulder looked like it might be partially done but as I rode west there were only spots with nice new smooth asphalt. When traffic disappeared I moved into the main lane west bound until I saw traffic approaching in my mirror. Overall I would say of the 5+ miles from FM1485 to FM1314 about 70% was rough shoulder. I will wait at least another month to see if they finish or ride around it.

Southeast Texas is in the grip of hot and dry weather. This is good for biking as long as I drink plenty of water. Today I used 3 large water bottles plus 32 oz. of blue PowerAde at the Cumberland Shell rest stop. I was 33.4 miles into the ride at that point arriving at 12:56. I stayed until 1:31 when I left for the 14+ miles to the end of the ride. What my Elemnt screen showed when i arrived at the Shell station and the weather.

8-9-2016 Cumberland Shell
8-9-2016 Porter Weather

As I was resting at under the pump canopy the light breeze felt cooling even with the heat. By the time I left the sweat on my arms had stopped dripping and my jersey was almost dry. Standing up the Greensheet newspaper absorbed a lot of moisture from my shorts. I ate a Clif bar and some snack crackers to recharge my energy for the rest of the ride. Wind was not a big deal today and I was able to keep a steady pace of 16 to 18 mph most of the time. I had my overall average speed up to 14.8 mph most of the ride.

I finished the ride at 2:38. Checking the airport weather it showed 100 degrees.

8-9-2016 IAH Weather Finish 250PM

The heat will be around for several more days. I plan on biking tomorrow. I am up to 298 miles for August; my goal is 800 miles. Year to date stands at 5,152 miles. My home weather station went off line at 12:56 today because the smart hub failed after I migrated to a new firmware. I called support and no one else has had this problem and they will get back to me with more information.
