About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Council Updated on Active Transportation Plan; City to Strive for “Silver” Bicycle Friendly Designation

richardsontoday.com

Transportation and Mobility staff gave an update to the City Council Monday regarding implementation of the City’s Active Transportation Plan (ATP), adopted in February, including current and future mobility projects that align with the City’s “Bicycle Friendly” designation. Richardson has been a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community since 2015 and was the first community in North Texas to receive the recognition. The award is given out by the League of American Bicyclists to communities making bicycling “a real transportation and recreation option for all people.” City staff plan to renew the Bicycle Friendly Community designation in 2024 with a goal to achieve Silver-level status.

Highlights of Monday’s presentation include: …

To celebrate the grand opening of the Northaven Trail Bridge, David Morgan led the “Northaven Bridge / Tour Dallas ADHOC Ride”. David set a cap at 14 riders and 14 riders registered. It was a great day for an urban ride. The ride started at the intersection of Arapaho and Hillcrest in Richardson. The route was approximately 44 miles and took us south with a counterclockwise loop through downtown Dallas. Thank you, David, for leading a great ride!

Dallas Texas’ Rule-of-Three, Rudolph’s Revenge the hardest MTB race in North Texas

DFW Series Racing – Shawn McAfee | www.youtube.com

Rudolph’s Revenge is the hardest MTB race in North Texas and covers 30 or 40 miles of blazing fast gravel, difficult multi-use trail and technical singletrack trail. It has been compared to the Rule-of-Three race in Bentonville Arkansas due to the diverse terrain and questionable bike choices.

In this video we are going to overview a few of the key sections of this route and show off some of the challenges and terrain riders will encounter.

This video will be focused on the 30 mile option. For athletes doing the 40 mile route they will do 2 laps of the Isle Du Bois State Park singletrack.

As a brief overview, the route is summarized as follows and we will discuss these sections as follows …

Squeeze Tires The Night Before When There’s Time To Fix A Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on November 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2023

Good thing I squeezed the rear tire on my Cervelo Caledonia last night. It was very soft so I set about fixing the flat. The hardest part was getting the Continental GatorShell tire off the rim and then back on the rim. In between that I found a microscopic hole and patched it. But re-mounting the tire I pinched the tube adding another hole. I opted to replace the tube. The tube has a removable valve core so I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt me if I have to fix a flat out on the road. I tightened the valve core so hopefully it will not unscrew after pumping up the tire. This would’ve made today’s bike ride start much later. A smaller fix was replacing the speed sensor battery as I was getting ready to roll out the door. No problem getting that exchanged.

With all of that behind me I started the ride at 11:16 AM riding the Cervelo Caledonia bike. The late start probably was going to mean not seeing other cyclists. I compensated for the late start by choosing the Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Walden route to shorten the time and distance to get to FM 1960 where I usually see cyclists. They were long gone by the time I got there. Today marked the 8th time on this route in 2023. I biked 34.43 miles getting to within 20 miles of my 360 road mile goal for November. I achieved two Strava top results: 3rd fastest time on Kings Crossing South (2:03) and Local Legend on Kings Harbor Loop Reverse. I finished the ride at 1:55 PM.

The sun tried to stay out but the clouds had their day. This made the perceived chill go up and down. I wore a light weight long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey but a heavier long sleeve jersey would’ve felt warmer. Weather: Start 70 degrees, humidity 73%, dew point 60.8, mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; Finish 72 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 60.9, mostly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

Root Canal Yesterday, Biking Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Today

Texbiker.net Posted on November 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 17, 2023

Root canal on Thursday and deary weather kept me inside. The weather improved and the root canal is history. Today’s bike ride went south through Atascocita, looped through Walden, and crossed Lake Houston to FM 2100 where i made the turn to head back to Kingwood. The ride started at 10:41 AM and ended at 1:25 PM. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on a slightly different Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. The first 6 miles was where I made some changes. According to SportTracks this was the 20th time biking this route but Strava didn’t find any matches, probably because of the changes I made. I did see another cyclist on Rustic Woods Drive in Kingwood less than 2 miles from the finish. It felt good to ride outside. I bundled up a little with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. No leg warmers needed. Weather: Start 71 degrees, humidity 72%, dew point 61.0, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; Finish 75 degrees, humidity 62%, dew point 61.3, mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. This is not going to be a 200 mile week but it will be 100+ miles.
