About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Start The Week With 40+ Miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2016

The ride started at 10:10 this morning, earlier than a typical start. I will catch up on stage 16 of the TdF after the ride. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route to ride more than 40 miles and actually biked 40.46 miles. Weather was a tiny bit milder with the earlier start and some clouds helped to keep it that way for some of the ride. Wind was almost calm but I did have to put out more effort riding north and then into Roman Forest. The ride south was easier and that is when the cloud cover blocked out the sun. It looked like it might be raining to the south but I didn’t catch any.

As I was crossing the Peach Creek bridge into Roman Forest another biker was on the bridge leaving. We waved at each other. I rarely see anyone biking there.

I tried to refill my water bottle at the New Caney Mobil station but a sign on the doors said they were temporally closed for 4 to 6 hours. I stretched the little water left to the Stripes station where I took a break, refilled my water bottle, bought Gatorade and ate a Clif bar and a whole grain fruit bar.

The stop was at the 28.3 mile point at 12:08. The weather shot shows how mild the temperature was thanks to the clouds. I was back biking at 12:42 heading home about 12+ miles away. I arrived at the end of the ride at 1:37.

Rollingwood City Council members OK next step in bike lane project

By Ed Allen

digital.olivesoftware.com

Rollingwood’s bike lane project moved closer to a start date with recent City Council action instructing the staff to initiate an agreement with neighboring West Lake Hills.
The agreement with West Lake Hills is necessary since one of Rollingwood’s main streets scheduled for bike lane striping serves as the border between the two cities.
Rollingwood Mayor Thom Farrell said he thinks West Lake Hills and its residents in the Ridgewood area “would love to have the bike lanes extended to that area, but there is the possibility that there may be objections.”
Preliminary plans for the project got started …

Day 66 – 68: Friends of South Padre Island
Saturday June 11, 2016, 46 km (29 miles) – Total so far: 2,873 km (1,785 miles)
On my first full day on the island, I didn’t quite know what I would do. Really all I wanted to do the first morning was sleep but the Sun’s rays cooking me in the tent got me moving. Tired, and hungry I packed up my stuff and got out of the campground. I had previously considered paying multiple nights at the campground, but I didn’t feel comfortable leaving stuff out in the open all day if I didn’t have to. It was easy enough to pack and take it all with me. I also wanted to camp on the gulf side of the island, on the real beach. The bay side isn’t quite the same.
Of course there are the hotels too, but I didn’t have much interest in getting one since it looked like most of them were around $150 a night or more, much more. Especially since it was a …

3 Saturday Bicyclists on Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 16, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJuly 16, 2016

I left home at 9:29 to start today’s ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Postponing watching the TdF until I got back allowed me the earlier than normal start. I thought I might see some of the Bike Barn Atascocita riders but I think they took the day off to ride the Katy Flatland Century tomorrow. I did glimpse two bikers at the Kings River and W. Lake Houston Parkway traffic light. I was slowing down for the red light and I saw them in the northbound lane between some bushes. Later I saw a lady biker on FM1960 at the Ghost Bike on the west side of the lake. She was riding towards me on the eastbound shoulder and we passed at the Ghost Bike. I waved and she waved back.

From that point forward it was me, the lone bicyclist. With the early start the temperature had not reached full boil and it reminded me of an early fall day but that quickly passed as the ride progressed. At 19.1 miles (the total ride miles was 31.25) I made my normal stop at the Huffman Chevron for a shorter than usual break. I ate a Clif bar washing it down with some blue PowerAde.

7-16-2016 Huffman Chevron
Huffman weather at the break
Huffman weather at the break

It was 10:54 when I stopped at the Chevron station. Most of my rides have not started yet at that time. When I finished the ride at 12:20 I thought of the rides this week that I was leaving home around that time. I left the station at 11:25 to ride the last 11+ miles of the route.

Today’s ride bumped this week’s mileage to 228 and July’s to 522 miles. Only 253 miles left to reach my 765 mile goal for July.

I am not sure if I will bike tomorrow. I have 14 days left to reach my goal and I have rode 14 out of 16 days in July so far. A rest day may be in order.
