About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sealy Road Race Series

By STEVEN SCHROEDER

www.sealynews.com

After the Sealybration kicked off Friday night, and while most were still sleeping early Saturday morning, a large race took place among bicyclists. The race started at Sealy High School and went all the way to New Ulm before finishing back at Sealy High School. This race was part of a series of races from the Sealy Road Race Series.
The race got off to a good start, with cyclists coming down Hwy 2187 from Sealy. There was one problem, however. As the bicyclists reached the 4-way intersection in Cat Spring, no one seemed to know which way to go. Some continued strait towards Bellville, some went west …

The day’s ride to South Padre Island would be short as well, although it didn’t feel so sweet. I had to continue my trip but a …

Hot, Dry and Windy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2016

This picture says it all about Texas biking in July: hot, windy and dry. Our appetite for ice must be high for the Stripes station to need a portable ice house. The Gatorade helped to hydrate and cool me before I took off to finish the ride.

“New Caney – Roman Forest Loop – Valley Ranch” route was my choice today. I checked my last ride on this route and it was 39.63 miles so I figured today I could add a little to it to reach 40+ miles. I added just enough to ride 40.14 miles bumping July’s miles to 421 towards my goal of 765 miles. I rode through Tavola using the loop I discovered and then into Roman Forest. By the time I got back to I-69/US59 I was 22 miles into the ride. It was hot and I needed to stop at the New Caney Mobil at FM1485 for ice and water. From there I rode to Stripes for a longer rest where I took the picture above.

The shade, Gatorade and food at Stripes helped me to recover for the 11+ miles to home. The Elemnt screen information when I arrived at Stripes.

The wind helped me to get to Roman Forest Blvd. but it was a strong hindrance on the return trip south to Kingwood. The 15.3 mph average speed I built up riding north slowly eroded on the south facing ride. During the ride I enjoyed the short rides in the shade. Roman Forest Blvd heading east put me in the shade for almost a mile.

I was slow to leave this morning (11:26) due to watching stage 11 of TdF but I got home sooner than I expected (2:49). So far I biked 127 miles this week, averaging 42.3 miles on each ride.

Hot weather and dry continues tomorrow so I will be biking. While I stop during a ride I have at least one person ask if it is too hot to ride. I tell them it is not too bad as long as I am moving.

“Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2016

Today I rode the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood”. I wanted another 40+ mile ride day and I biked 44.07 miles today. There was a slight opportunity to leave before 11 AM but I got distracted and ended up starting at 11:19.

The weather continues being hot and dry. It was 94 degrees when I started and 97 when I finished at 3:07. The wind was a big issue today until I made the right hand turn onto FM2100 from Hare Cook Road. Pedaling was hard whenever I rode south into the wind. Riding at 13 mph was about all my legs could do into the wind but I made up for it with the tailwind later. Once I lifted my average speed to 14+ mph I maintained it until the end of the ride.

I was a tired biker when I reached the Huffman Chevron at 1:39. The shade and cold PowerAde was what I needed to refill my energy along with a Clif bar and a whole grain fruit bar. At that point I biked 32.8 miles.

As I was resting I heard a train horn to the west. From the sound I thought it might the Amtrak train but it was 1:59 and the train usually goes through Huffman around 1:20 but it was. I guess the train was running late on the way to New Orleans.

I left the Chevron station around 2:17 refreshed for the 11+ mile ride home. The wind was now from my left. It wasn’t too bad until I started riding on the causeway over Lake Houston without anything to break the wind. When I got home I found out the wind was strong: SSE 15 mph 20 mph gusts. At least the road was not rough like yesterday.
