About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New bridge, underpass planned to ease Uptown to Memorial Park bike and ped trips

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A cyclist rides along a trail near Memorial Park by Loop 610 on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023 in Houston. Uptown Management District, acting as the county improvement district in the area, will receive $18.5 million in federal funds for an improved bike connection between the area west of Loop 610 to Memorial Park. The freeway is a major barrier for bicyclists, which the project will eliminate by crossing Buffalo Bayou and then creating a trail along the banks below Loop 610. That trail will then connect with the existing trail along Woodway.

The overwhelming task of getting to Memorial Park from Uptown by bike or on foot is poised to vastly improve, provided a $22 million project for a bridge across Buffalo Bayou and underpass of Loop 610 come to pass.

“The West Loop has always been this wall that makes getting to memorial park harder than it ought to be,” said John Breeding, president of Uptown Houston.

Uptown, acting as the area’s county improvement district, was awarded nearly $18.5 million last week for the project aimed at better non-motorized access to Memorial Park. As the park has added amenities and seen reinvestment in trails, running facilities and its eastern portion, use has grown and with it, the …

The Solar Eclipse Lent an Air of Magic to Marfa’s Annual Bike Race

Written by: Kathryn Lundstrom | texashighways.com

For over a decade, the Marfa100 has welcomed cyclists of nearly all ages on a West Texas adventure

As the moon crept between the sun and the Earth, an unexpected chill ran through the air along Ranch Road 2810 in Marfa.

We’d gotten off our bikes after 31 miles to peer up at the sun’s visible crescent through flimsy cardboard eclipse glasses, but hurriedly remounted as the temperature began to drop—almost grateful for the mile-long climb back up onto the plateau, away from the Chinati Mountains, back toward town. The 2023 Marfa100, a 62-mile cycling race held in Marfa, coincided with an annular eclipse on Oct. 14, lending an unusual magic to the yearly two-wheeled jaunt through the alpine desert. I fell in love with the ride in 2017 and haven’t missed one since, each year recruiting more friends and family members to travel out to West Texas with me for the breathtaking—if not strenuous—route down RR 2810. …

Video: City of Dallas explores options to make biking in city safer

By Lori Brown | www.fox4news.com

DALLAS – The City of Dallas is working on a plan that would make it safer for bicyclists.

Several Dallas City Council members expressed a desire for city staff to create a connected system that will allow more people to use bicycles as a way to get around, and not just for recreation.

“Years ago we said we want to be a suburban-style city and have roads that go everywhere and that is why you have districts like mine and further into District 12, because we made that decision as a city to go horizontal instead of vertical,” said Councilwoman Jaynie Schultz.

Council members want city staff to focus on connecting bike lanes where …

Video: 3 East Texas cities receive funding for pedestrian, bicycle infrastructure

By Tyre White | www.ktre.com

EAST TEXAS, (KTRE) – Lufkin, Huntington, and Coldspring are three cities across Texas receiving funding to bring sidewalks, bike lanes, and other infrastructure to their communities.

Member of Angelina Bicycle Club, Lynnette Wood says places for pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely are rarely available.

“Where there are sidewalks, they just end abruptly. You run out of sidewalk and you’re either in the grass or have to move to the roadway and I know many cyclists who prefer not to ride on the roads because they do feel unsafe,” said Wood.

Lufkin will receive more than $1.7 million for new sidewalks on Angelina Street and Atkinson Drive.

Coldspring will receive …

Major upgrades coming to Lemmon Avenue-Love Field Gateway

By Robbie Owens | www.cbsnews.com

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) – Whether you live near Dallas Love Field or if Lemmon Avenue is your gateway to a getaway: brace for some big changes. Progress is coming, ushered in, of course, with construction.

“It’s just like every day there’s more and more of the project being completed just down the street,” says Darren Doutt, who lives in a nearby neighborhood. “It’s great.”

Construction is just beginning on the project that encompasses the area along Lemmon Avenue from Collville Avenue to Shorecrest Drive, and Shorecrest Drive from Lemmon to Webb Chapel Extension.

According to city leaders, the upgrades will make the area safer, more accessible, and more attractive: with a new gateway feature, sidewalks, bicycle paths and more. …

Zwift Watopia Canopies and Coastlines Route Extended

Texbiker.net Posted on November 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumNovember 1, 2023

Today I rode the third new route in Watopia, Canopies and Coastlines. The route description listed 17.1 miles and 806 feet of climbing. I wanted to ride more miles so I created a meetup using the Canopies and Coastlines route as the base and made the distance 22 mile. With the added 4.9 miles I had no idea how much climbing or the roads after finishing Canopies and Coastlines. It turns out the climbing totaled 1083 feet with most of the 4.9 miles going uphill. My legs got a workout. There were several sprints. I set new Zwift personal records on the Woodland Sprint (45.39 seconds) and the Stoneway Sprint (48.81 seconds). Strava does not list these sprints as segments thus not showing the results. The start time was 12:15 PM. Outside the temperature was in the low 50’s, sunny with a north wind at 11 mph. The reasons I chose Zwift today.

The recording and editing today changed. I lowered the Zwift sound volume in Zwift, moved the mic for my audio in front of the bike, recorded clips rather the whole ride, and us Premier Elements to edit. I need to learn more about DaVinci Resolve to edit.

Here’s where TxDOT is funding safer bike trails and walkways across North Texas

KERA | By Pablo Arauz Peña | www.keranews.org

Officials at the Texas Department of Transportation last week announced an historic investment in bike trails and pedestrian walkways as demand grows for more walkable neighborhoods across the region.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved $345 million in federal fundsfor projects that include Five Mile Creek Trail in Southern Dallas and the Cotton Belt/Silver Line Rail Trail that will run from the North Dallas suburbs to East Fort Worth.

The funding is about six times more than the $55 million TxDOT made available in 2021 for what it calls Transportation Alternatives.

“The huge increase is due in part to …

Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023

#1: Day 38: 10/31/23 Silsbee to Merryville,TX By sedona_rocks on Tue 31 Oct 2023 18:32 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) We waited until 9:30 to get started in order to avoid the early showers. We didn’t get any rain on the ride today and in fact we rode in full sun after lunch. Yay. Nothing too special about our ride except that we made it out of Texas after 19 days. We’ll be in Louisiana for the next week. We are camping on the grounds of the Merryville Historical Society and Museum. They greeted us when we rolled in and then cooked a wonderful dinner this evening for us. We stuffed our faces with crawfish etouffee, fried shrimp, hush puppies, salad and a bunch of homemade desserts. The meal was followed by a short talk on the history of the area. It was all very wonderful. It is going down to 36 tonight so we are all bundled up in our tents. We have one more day of this cold snap before it starts to warm up. I think we are all looking forward to that.

Day 39 – Silsbee, TX to Merryville, LA: State #5!!

Tuesday October 31, 2023 It was a good thing we had indoor facilities last night. It got down to 44 degrees and the wind has been nonstop. We again waited until it looked like rain wouldn’t be a problem, so we didn’t get on the road until 9:30. It did work. No rain today.

However, the wind was not our friend. For weeks the wind has been coming from the southeast as we have been traveling southeast. Today we needed to travel north and guess what? It blew from the north at about 13 mph. Kind of aggravating. It seems the wind has been blowing against us most of the time.

Again I dressed and rode in my winter weather gear. I never did get too warm but I did ride comfortably. Many of the riders didn’t bring enough cold weather riding clothes. We have a couple more days of this cold and wind and then things are supposed to get back to normal. …

Exploring New Watopia Route: Coast Crusher

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2023

The cool weather continued today, Tuesday, and I rode Zwift for the last activity in October. I chose another new Watopia route, Coast Crusher, riding 26.75 miles. The official distance was 26.4 miles but I continued pedaling after the end of the ride. The elevation gain was about 200 feet less than yesterday’s ride on Watopia’s The Big Ring and I was glad. I am a flatlander cyclist. The ride followed most of yesterday’s road on the new roads in Watopia doubling back where the Big Ring continued. . Today there were seven sprints (maybe more). I improved my time on three that repeated from yesterday: Sasquatch, Acroplois, and Stoneway.

October cycling came to an end today. My road mile goal was 700 and I rode 829.2 miles. Including Zwift rides I rode 934.28 miles. I rode 29 days. 26 days I rode outside and 3 days I rode Zwift. Zwift will probably increase in November as the weather cools. Summary of October’s activity and year progressions below.
