“It’s very hard for me every day. It’s like it was yesterday when he left us,” Enriquetta Amaya said.
It’s been fifteen years since Amaya’s older brother, Fernando Amaya, was killed while cycling.
“On August 25th of 2008, at 7 a.m. in the morning on his way to work,” Amaya said. “He was run over by a careless driver. He was on his bike on his way to work.”
Fernando was 42 years old and had been a deputy with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. He loved to bike, but loved his family more, taking care of all of his siblings. …

What a wet, wet day. It started raining at 7 am and didn’t stop until after we finished at 4 pm. It was probably the wettest day I ever rode in, at least I can’t recall a wetter day on a bike.

I spent most of the day in a bike shop today. Turns out all the wet weather yesterday shorted out my Di2 electronic shifting on my bike. It was stuck in one gear and wasn’t moving. I knew it was serious from my first pedal stroke this morning. It was such a sinking feeling because I knew I couldn’t fix it.

BikeHouston, an advocacy group for pedestrians and cyclists, is holding a Ghost Bike Ride that will visit the crash sites of those who have died while riding bikes in the city.
The organization is expecting a few dozens to attend the ride around the city Friday, visiting crash sites and talking about each killed cyclist. The Ghost Ride comes after more than 15 cyclists died in Houston while riding a bike this year, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

BikeHouston is hosting a commemorative bike ride this weekend to remember cyclists who have died on Houston streets.
Why it matters: This year has already been deadlier for cyclists than all of 2022.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In late August, the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department reduced Barton Springs Road from two lanes to one between South Lamar Boulevard and Azie Morton Road. That created a dedicated and protected bike lane for cyclists on the right lane of Barton Springs both eastbound and westbound.

Cycling enthusiasts joined UHD Bike Club for a 10-mile ride to Hermann Park. The six cyclists rode from the UHD sign next to the Student Life Center to Hermann Park. After seeing the sunset and socializing at Hermann Park, the cyclists rode back to UHD. State Grant Will Fund Pedestrian-Bike Path Across Oso Bay
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi’s Holly Road Train Trestle to Tourism Trail Project was awarded just over $13 million to connect Flour Bluff Drive and the Holly Road Hike and Bike Trails. The funding will help to construct a new ADA-accessible shared-use path and bridge across Oso Bay.

McLennan County cities are getting $6.7 million from the state of Texas to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists get from here to there.
The Texas Department of Transportation this week announced $345 million in awards from its Transportation Alternative set-aside program for projects meant to protect those who walk and ride.
TxDOT’s Waco District got $19 million for eight such projects across its multiple counties.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The City of Wichita Falls has been awarded 2.7 million dollars by the Texas Transportation Commission to improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure around the city.
The funding is part of a statewide safety enhancement to improve mobility options to schools, jobs, public transit, and other local destinations.
Since Texas pedestrian fatalities are rising, these projects will help improve safety for people walking, biking, or using wheelchairs, including 24 projects in areas with a high pedestrian crash history.

Dwayne Joseph Brinac was struck and killed while riding his bicycle.
HOUSTON — A bicyclist was struck and killed in east Harris County earlier this month and now deputies are asking for the public’s help to find the driver who hit him.
It happened at around 11 p.m. Sunday, October 15 on Crosby Lynchburg Road near Highway 90. Deputies say a dark-colored 2011 to 2015 Chrysler Town and Country van hit Dwayne Joseph Brinac, who was riding his bicycle, from behind and kept going.

It was a good thing we had the pavilion last night. It really rained a couple times and was nice this morning that we didn’t have to deal with a wet tent. However, it was humid and warm last night. I pretty much just slept on my air mat and was still too warm. I needed to help get things ready for breakfast and lunch which puts you a little late for getting on the road, but we had many people helping so we didn’t get too late a start.
We had a great day of riding today. It was slightly foggy when we started and very heavy humidity. I am amazed at how quickly Texas became green. It appears that this part of Texas gets more rain. We rode through many cattle ranches and pastures today.
