About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2015 BIKE AND PEDSTRIAN COUNT REPORT – JANUARY 2016

www.cityofdenton.com

Introduction
In September 2015, the City of Denton conducted its first manual bicycle and pedestrian counts. Counts were conducted by eleven volunteers at eight locations across the City (see Appendix 1). Locations were chosen based on where infrastructure projects are planned in the near future, where bike ridership is already well-known, high pedestrian-traffic areas. By focusing on locations that are planned to have bike infrastructure in the near future, e.g. bike lanes or sharrows, the City can track the effects of those
changes with the before and after numbers. Future count data could be used to provide supporting documentation for grant applications to leverage local funding, or to help prioritize projects.
This first year of data will set a baseline for the number of people biking and walking in Denton. With each subsequent year of counts, the goal is to see numbers increase for both modes. Increases will …

This weekend’s rides: Triple Bs! Red Horn! Bike Mechanic on Sunday!

Sunday is our usual Coffee Shop ride to Red Horn. It is 50 miles and is at a more relaxed pace than our Saturday rides, but we typically finish with a 17mph average speed overall. While we make great efforts to keep the group together, this is NOT a no drop ride. If you …

Vision Zero Network will feature seven Green Lane Project alumni cities

Michael Andersen, Green Lane Project staff writer        www.peopleforbikes.org

A new network dedicated to the concept of eliminating preventable traffic fatalities is rich with Green Lane Project expertise.
Seven of the Green Lane Project’s 12 past and present focus cities will also be part of the new Vision Zero Focus Cities network announced Tuesday.
Vision Zero is the concept, first developed in Sweden but increasingly popular in the United States, that the public bears partial responsibility for every traffic death and can take steps such as speed reduction and physical separation to eliminate virtually all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.
Here’s the Vision Zero Network’s list of focus cities, with past or present Green Lane Project focus cities in bold:

Loop around the lake would benefit city

by Bill Cullins        www.gosanangelo.com

The $3.9 million Red Arroyo Trail, initially scheduled for completion by mid-July of last year, is finally close to being completed and some residents are starting to use the 4 miles of meandering 14-foot wide concrete paths.
Unfortunately, I don’t see the Red Arroyo area becoming a major exercise and recreation destination for San Angelo residents. My bet is that the primary users of these paths will be people who live or work close to the arroyo and who don’t mind the comparatively drab appearance of a red-dirt flood plain with very few shade trees.
Most people will continue to use the KOA loop or the lakeside parks for their cycling, running or …

Injured cyclist hopes trial will lead to state ban on distracted driving

By Fred Cantú        keyetv.com

A jury will hear the case of a local cyclist suing the driver who hit him. The driver was distracted by his cell phone — which wasn’t against the law when and where this crash occurred, but the injured cyclist is hoping to use his case to change that.
Since Bobby Crouch’s run-in with a distracted driver nearly three years ago, he and his wife Margo have been on a mission. Margo Crouch says, “It may take some time but there has to be a consequence to being on your phone and hurting someone or killing someone just …

The Jacket Choice Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 25, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 25, 2016

I decided to ride the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route today since I biked to the south on the last ride. I left home at 12:01 under an overcast sky and 75 degrees. I started to wear a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve jersey and skip the jacket but at the last minute I skipped the short sleeve jersey and added the jacket. More about this choice later.

Not too long after I started I got the “phone disconnected” message on my Garmin Edge 520. I thought I had fixed this but I think the Connect app on my phone updated since my last ride. Then I noticed the odometer stopped at .49 miles as I rode. I stopped on the trail beside Northpark Drive to see if I could fix this. After a number of phone pairing attempts I powered off my phone and the 520. Then the phone and 520 paired and I resumed the ride. I think I was stopped about 10 minutes or more. This was worse than a flat tire.

With the Garmin functioning I rode through Sherwood Trails and Elmgrove on the way to Woodridge Forest and then US59. The sun popped out a couple of times on the way to Roman Forest. At the Roman Forest turn around I had to ride into the southwest wind. My speed dropped down to 15 mph compared to the 18 to 19 mph getting there. I stayed on the US59 southbound service road until I got to Valley Ranch Parkway. Turning onto the parkway I started feel a light rain. Now I was glad I made the jacket choice back at the start of the road. Even with the temperature in the 70’s the rain was cold. It stayed with me until I stopped under the Grand Parkway overpass where I stopped for a few minutes. Leaving the overpass shelter the rain stopped. I rode to FM1314 but I didn’t stop at the Stripes station for a change. I figured the rain might catch up with me.

It turned out the rain was waiting for me in Oakhurst but not as heavily and I quickly rode away from it. I made my way through Oakhurst and back to Kingwood getting home at 2:39.

I am up to 246 miles for January with only 13 miles left to reach my goal of 259 miles. Tomorrow’s weather forecast doesn’t look favorable for biking: rain and a high in the 50’s.

The weather when I got home.
