About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fire Engines Aplenty Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2016

Today’s ride is the longest one of the year so far. I rode 35.42 miles on a slightly modified “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. I increased my miles for January to 315 exceeding my 259 mile goal. I hope to ride a few miles tomorrow to add onto January. Last year I managed to ride 141 miles in January so this is a nice improvement. The weather has been cooperating this year unlike last year. Today it was 76 degrees when I started at 12:25 and that was what it was when I got back home at 3:19. The clear sky hung around from yesterday with just a few tiny white clouds.

I haven’t ridden this route since October 2015. Not much has changed as far as the roads go. The Grand Parkway construction at FM1314 is still there but the parkway is supposed to open in March or April.

Today as I rode NW on FM1485 away from New Caney I saw a Lone Start Ranch fire department engine parked on the shoulder of the other side of the road near a fire hydrant. The fire engine’s lights were flashing and in front of it was a fire truck tanker hooked up to the fire hydrant. In the distance in front of me I could see another fire truck coming towards me lights flashing. This was another tanker. It drove past the one on the shoulder and I didn’t think too much about it. From that point it was about a mile from Gene Campbell Road where I would turn. Continuing to ride two more fire engine tankers passed me going towards New Caney. Traffic was starting to increase and as I approached Gene Campbell Road I could not turn left because of the traffic so I rode on past. About a half of a mile ahead I saw more flashing lights on my side of the road with traffic stopped. Cars and trucks started to turn around and come back making me think the road was closed. Another fire engine tanker came from the blocked area and traffic stopped and I made it across FM1485 to head back to Gene Campbell Road. I could hear sirens after I made the turn. At first there wasn’t much traffic on Gene Campbell Road but it started to increase. Normally this road doesn’t have much traffic except for the occasional WalMart distribution center trucks. Now the traffic was steady meaning FM1485 was probably still blocked. By the time I got to FM1314 the traffic had let up some. I went left on FM1314 headed back to Porter.

Earlier there was heavy traffic on Loop 494 north of Porter. The south bound lanes were backed up about 2 miles. During the week this doesn’t happen. I am not sure why it did today. I rode north so it wasn’t a problem for me.

At the 23.39 mile marked I pulled into the Stripes station on FM1314 at 2:01. I took a 20 minute break to eat 2 Kashi Trail Mix bars and drink some water. I am avoiding the sports drinks for now since it isn’t that hot and they are heavy with sugar. As I sat on the concrete a car pulled in and a tall man got out. As he walked by he said something about a bad time to take a break. He might have had too much to drink. When he came out of Stripes he said something again not too friendly. Fortunately he wasn’t driving. The weather was warm and I enjoyed the sun.

1-30-2016 Porter Weather-1
1-30-2016 Porter Weather-2

Until stopping at the Stripes station the wind had not been a big problem but I figured from there to home I would have fight the wind most of the way. The hardest section was on the US59 south bound service road from Valley Ranch to Northpark Drive. Before riding this stretch I thought I would ride to Kingwood Drive but the wind was so stout I decided to take Northpark Drive to hit the side streets back into Kingwood. This probably shortened the route by 2 miles and my legs were relieved. Once I was in Kingwood the wind was not so bad. When I got home I saw why I had to fight so hard: 13 mph from the south with 20 mph gusts.

Jury awards Austin-area bicyclist hit by car $865K

By Adela Uchida        keyetv.com

When a truck collided with Robert Crouch as he was riding his bicycle on Barton Creek Boulevard in May 2013, it left Crouch’s spine broken in four places. Patrick Linton of Austin was on his cell phone at the time, according to court documents. So Crouch sued Linton.
Friday, the jury came back with its decision. “We decided that the plaintiff needed to be compensated, but not to the degree that was asked,” juror Lyndsey Christena told KEYE TV. Crouch received $865,000 in compensatory damages, but the jury did not find gross negligence, so Crouch did …

Southeast Texas Beautiful Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 29, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 29, 2016

The nice bicycling weather finally arrived in southeast Texas. It is supposed to hang around through Sunday but Monday might get it as well. The temperature was 78 degrees when I left home at 12:29 to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. My ride earlier in the week went north so to keep it balanced I rode to the south and east. With the nice weather I left the jacket at home and wore a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve one, shorts and no leg warmers were necessary. This was a good choice except for the first mile while my body warmed up and I rode out of the heavily shaded areas.

Once I was riding sou1-29-2016 Huffman Weatherth out of Kingwood the shade thinned out and my body got warm. Nothing special happened along the route until I got to Huffman and the FM2100/FM1960 intersection. TXDOT is replacing the traffic signals so a bunch of trucks and workers from Traf-Tex were on each corner digging and pouring concrete for what looked like new traffic signal pole bases. I commented to the ladies inside the Huffman Chevron about all of the activity and they said it is hard to tell what will happen next at their corner. I noticed some railroad track replacement stuff laying beside FM2100 so that will probably be next.

I took a short break at the Chevron, sitting in the sun for the first time this year. It felt nice as I ate some donuts and a trail mix bar washed down with my water. The weather screenshot while I was there.

The time and temperature sign across the street reported 80 degrees as I was getting ready to leave at 2:25. I was 21.73 miles into the ride. I rode west on FM1960 comfortable in the “80” degrees until I got to the causeway over Lake Houston. The water is still cold from the winter and riding over the lake was chilly enough to go through my two jerseys and try to take my breath away. I did get a break whenever the traffic came by on my left and blocked the wind coming off the lake to the south. The closer I got to the west shore the less chill I got from the wind.

Riding through Atascocita away from the cold water I got warm again.

I got another chill riding north on W. Lake Houston when I was on the bridge over the San Jacinto River. The north shore was welcomed. When I got back home at 3:19 it was 75 degrees and still very sunny.

Tomorrow could be a few degrees warmer and Sunday could hold the same as well. I noticed the forecast for Harlingen in the Rio Grand Valley calls for 80+ degrees over the next few days.

My road bike reached 12035 miles which means I should change the tires, chain and rear cassette. I have 6000 miles on the continental Gatorskin tires with just a couple of flats which is why I chose these tires.

My Garmin Edge 520 stayed connected to my Nexus 6P phone for the entire ride without any “phone disconnected” messages. Since my last ride on Monday the Garmin Connect app had an update which might account for this.In fact as I write this the app updated again to version 3.2.1.

Bike lane signage coming to Coppell

Mike Albanese        starlocalmedia.com

A recommendation Tuesday by Coppell City Manager Clay Phillips to add bike lane signage on city streets was approved by the Coppell City Council.
“This is really near and dear to the heart of the avid cyclist that really likes to ride many, many miles,” Phillips said. “This is not necessarily to get little kids to and from school. It’s not necessarily to get the casual rider, the recreational rider, to and from trail connections. But it will do a lot of that.”
He said work will begin “starting immediately.”
He said the city will post two different signs. One will be placed on streets with at …
