About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

First Bike Ride of 2016 – Kingwood Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2016 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2016

The sunshine beckoned me to ride but the temperature could’ve a little warmer. When I left home at 1:52 on temperature gauge reported 66 degrees but the one in the shade said 62. I think the 62 was closer to being right. As I rode the Kingwood trails the shaded portions made me glad I bundled up with a thermal jersey over a short sleeve jersey covered by a windbreaker jacket. I wore leg warmers with the shorts and my legs were toasty. I opted for half-finger gloves and they were okay but my fingers could tell when they weren’t in the sun.

This is the first ride in 2016. The weather has not been friendly to my riding so far with overcast skies and temperatures at best in the 50’s, which is below my 60 degree lower tolerance level.

A lot of walkers on the trails today most with dogs but no problems with either of them. I do tend to startle people when I approach them from the their blind side even when I call out “on your left”. I think many of them are not listening or have earbuds.

I can tell I need more riding. Pedaling the Motobecane 700HT MTB’s 32 pounds takes extra effort. I long for the road bike.

Weather at the end of the ride.

Texas senior center gets folks back to cycling

By Pam LeBlanc of the Austin American-Statesman        lmtribune.com

Five months into a free class at the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, the 68-year-old confidently pedaled a bright red, adult-sized …

Catch Him if You Can

Story by Amy Reisner, Photos by Jamie Handy     www.southlakestyle.com

They are either set for you by others, or you create them for yourself. Fortunately for his teammates and coaches, neither scenario applies to Christopher Tracht, a student at Carroll Middle School. He’s your typical 14-year-old boy with favorite classes (Texas or U.S. history), a favorite place to hang out (the outdoors), and favorite sports (it’s a toss- up between cycling and running).
But what’s not typical is his determination and grit. He allows nothing to get in the way of his …

Folsom Road hike and bike trail nears completion

By Dan Wallach        www.beaumontenterprise.com

When the new Folsom Road hike and bike trail from Major Drive to Dowlen Road opens, it will be, uh, swale.
It’s just in time for New Year’s resolutions to exercise and to enjoy a brisk walk, a soft jog or a flat-out run along the 1.4 mile-long concrete trail.
It’s essentially finished except one “swale” detail.
The contractor still has to carve a shallow ditch, called a swale, along its length for proper runoff in …
