About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Kingwood Streets Ride, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2023 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2023

Today’s bike ride began after I got home from church. It started at 1:47 PM riding my Lynskey Helix bike. By then it was hot but the lower humidity and dew point blunted the heat some. Adding the strong wind and it didn’t feel that bad. I tried to duplicate last Sunday’s route on Kingwood streets but I added a couple of extra streets, a loop into East End Park, and a longer loop through Royal Brook ending with 19.8 miles. This was enough for a 200+ mile week despite not riding on Monday. Weather: 94 degrees, 41% humidity, dew point 65.2, partly cloudy, wind E 14 mph gusts 25 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 40% humidity, dew point 64.4, partly cloudy, wind E 15 mph gusts 22 mph.

I was very happy to be able to join a large group of people this morning as we rode throughout the hill country to celebrate Kevin L ‘s birthday! I’m also very relieved that, even though the ride was very hard, it doesn’t appear that my decreased training volume secondary to my new job at TSAOG is affecting me too negatively. Most of all, and as always, I am thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both physically and spiritually, thus enabling me to return to this sport that I love, and for another great ride with several wonderful friends.?

I Saw Cyclists Biking To Huffman. September Biking Recap

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 30, 2023

I rode the usual route for Saturday but I shortened by not riding through North Woodland Hills and South Woodland Hills. I left them out because I started at 8:56 AM (later than usual) and to get to FM 1960 to see other cyclists before they passed through. Also I wasn’t sure how my sit bone area would handle riding. I wore a pair of AeroTech Design gel shorts that I bought July 2019 but only wore a couple of times. The fabric is lighter than I prefer and the inseam is shorter. They were a great choice and my sit bone didn’t hurt during the ride. I saw my first cyclist before leaving Hunters Ridge in Kingwood. Once I rode to the bridge over the San Jacinto River I saw more cyclists until Fairlake Lane when I didn’t see anymore until Pinehurst Trail Drive and later at Kingwood Drive. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike for the last September bike ride finishing at 12:21 PM. I stopped at the Chevron station in Huffman for ice and water taking a couple of minutes to look at emails on my phone. As I rode into Kings River my daughter texted me and I stopped to talk with her for 35 minutes before resuming the ride. Weather: Start 79 degrees, 81% humidity, dew point 72.5, mostly clear, wind 6 mph; Finish 88 degrees, 61% humidity, dew point 73.3, mostly clear, wind E 10 mph. It felt nice with the wind cooling me while in the sun.

September ended with 923.5 miles accumulated on 25 rides, averaging 36.94 miles per ride. I rode one organized ride, Rollin’ Pearland on September 9th. The rest were solo rides on routes I’ve done before. I drove to Galveston to ride on the 28th. I used all three bikes: Cervelo 10 rides, Canyon Endurace 11 rides, and Lynskey Helix 4 rides. Year to date I biked 7056 road miles and 681 virtual miles. I had two flat tires, both on the Lynskey Helix bike. September 2022 I biked 1,003 miles, September 2021 was 835 miles.

METRO to debut bike share program in summer 2024

By Melissa Enaje | communityimpact.com

A new strategic bike share program that will utilize existing transit hubs is expected to roll out in summer 2024 after officials with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County unanimously approved of funding the contract at a Sept. 28 meeting.

With this initiative, commuters will be able to combine METRO’s upcoming biking option with existing public transit, METRO Board Chair Sanjay Ramabhadran said, in an effort to address connectivity challenges.

“This gets us from the limbo that we are in, with the potential lack of a bike share in the fourth largest city, to having a system in place with our focus being…the equitable, accessible, sustainable component, is very critical,” Ramabhadran said. …

Got chased by several doggies this morning. Couple of them got Kicked in the mouth and sent home crying this morning. Not sure why I chose today to do this long ride, the phone rang about 20x for work. I’ll be slammed this afternoon as a result. I was able to at least get some decent elevation. Approx 6 Mi was pavement (partly because I made a wrong turn and had to reroute) The rest was dirt, sand, & rock??
