Another bike ride on a route I haven’t been on for almost a month. I guess it hasn’t come up in my mind to ride it sooner. Today’s bike ride went south on the Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman route. The route route goes south before turning east to go over Lake Houston and circle Huffman. Starting at 9:26 AM pedaling my Canyon Endurace bike I changed the route to avoid the traffic at Kingwood Park High School due to their later start time on Thursday. This added a little more distance compared to the 36.6 average distance for the previous 5 rides in 2023 as I rode 37.20 miles today. The week totals 161.57 miles, a good position to hit 200+ miles and make up for falling short of 200 miles last week. My legs felt good today powering along the ride. I aired the tires up to 80 psi before the ride and the Canyon seemed to roll easier. Hot weather was back for another shot but the wind wasn’t gusting like yesterday. Weather for my bike ride: Start 84 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 76.6, a few clouds, wind E 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 62% humidity, dew point 76.8, partly cloudy, wind E 8 mph. I finished at 12:30 PM.
The end of the road for Houston’s bike sharing system might be a little further off into the distance after all, provided a funding boost from the city comes in.
Mayor Sylvester Turner said he will ask the City Council, likely next week, to approve $500,000 in funding for the nonprofit bike system, aimed at keeping it running another public bike rental service is in place.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (September 18, 2023) – The 2023 UCI Gravel World Championships are set to take place in Veneto, Italy on October 7-8, 2023. In the event’s second year, USA Cycling is sending a team with goals of a podium for the American racers.
As part of the UCI’s Cycling for All initiative, the Gravel World Championships qualification process is multi-faceted. Riders can qualify for their age group by finishing in the top 25% of one of the Trek UCI Gravel World Series events. UPDATE: 10:15 a.m. – According to CCPD, two of the three stolen bikes have been recovered, including one that’s worth $15,000.
“They came in the store and immediately grabbed the most expensive bikes in the store, so it’s kind of an off coincidence that they did that unknowingly,” Bay Area Bicycles owner David Pena said.
Pena said that police told him that one of the suspects was arrested when police spotted him riding the stolen $15,000 bike.
Unfortunately, the bike now has $3,000 in damages. …
MCKINNEY (CBSnewsTexas.com) – He reportedly threw his bike in the path of another cyclist who only minutes before has passed him on the trail, causing the victim to flip over his handlebar.
Now detectives with the McKinney Police Department are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect in an unprovoked assault on Aug. 26.
It was about 9:30 in the morning when the victim was riding his bike on the trails through Erwin Park. He told police that the suspect starting cursing at him after the victim rode by him.

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – An East Texas city considers plans to expand their network of walking trails, with the help of some handy grant money.
Longview City Council will take up the issue, on how to do it, and overcome possible obstacles.
With its beginnings in the early 1980s, the Longview trail system has become popular with runners, cyclists and walkers.
“Having heard from so many people that the trail system is one of those things that draw people in from everywhere,” said Longview’s director of parks and recreation John Albertson.
Today’s bike ride was on the New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd. route, one I haven’t rode since August 18th. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike rolling away at 9:32 AM. This was the 5th time on the route in 2023. Looking at the previous rides the average distance is 38.9 miles which is how far I rode today. Interesting that 2 rides were the exact same distance, 38.90. I finished at 12:51 PM. Weather conditions are warming up from the previous days. The wind on the way back to Kingwood had a kick with 20 mph gusts from the south. No wonder my legs felt sluggish. I was pushing the pedals hard and not increasing my speed. I got my overall average speed up to 14.1 mph and held it there for several miles.
My week now totals 124.35 miles, not bad for 3 days of biking. September totals 598.51 miles, 83% of the way to my goal. My AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 38 rear derailleur shifts and 2:30:02 using 35×13 gears for 32.9 miles. Weather: Start 84 degrees, 72% humidity, dew point 74.5, mostly clear, wind E 3 mph; Finish 91 degrees, 54% humidity, dew point 71.8, partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph gusts 20 mph.

I went to the Montrose TIRZ open house last night to see the plans for the Montrose Blvd redesign. Overall it looks good, but still places where cars are prioritized over people.
Denton resident Aaron Powell turned his love of cycling into his life’s work when he founded electric cargo bike company Bunch Bikes in 2017. What began as a small startup has since bloomed into a much more ambitious enterprise, with Powell appearing on ABC’s “Shark Tank” in 2021.
Two judges on the show invested in Powell’s company, helping it buoy the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Bunch Bikes has scaled up, moving to a bigger facility in October 2021 to keep up with demand. The growth has been so rapid that Powell has pressed pause on trying to increase sales.

The event starts at Saint Arnold Brewing Company and ends at the Northside Festival being held in the Naylor parking lot of the University of Houston – Downtown Science & Technology Building.

Plainview cyclist Cris Salinas is biking around the Plainview area to raise money for childhood cancer research once again.
The 61-year-old is raising money through his participation in the Great Cycle Challenge. This year marks year number four for Salinas. Some of his motivation to raise money comes from his mother who lost her life to cancer in 2020.
The campaign officially began at the beginning of September and, according to his website, he has biked 351 miles and has raised $549.
