Keep McAllen Beautiful Announces Arbor Day Celebration, Nov. 4th

McALLEN, Texas – Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) is hosting its twelfth annual Arbor Day Celebration with a new date; Saturday, November 4, 2023 and a new location – Westside Park (1000 S. Ware Rd). This fundraiser will benefit Keep McAllen Beautiful, a 501©3 non-profit organization, and will help increase awareness of the importance of planting and caring for trees in McAllen.

The Arbor Day Celebration is a run, bike, and walk event that benefits everyone interested in personal health and the environment. All events are open from amateur to professional levels, with an option for everyone. The day will begin with a 25Mi/100K Bike Ride, a 5K/10K Run, Kids 2K Run, and an ongoing Tree Workshop. Today was a whole mess from start to finish! My Garmin 1040 glitched twice, and it wouldn’t resume the ride after restarts. Fortunately my watch recorded the whole ride, but the auto-pause is configured a bit differently. Almost all solo again today. I guess group rides just aren’t my thing anymore. There were once B groups who ride at my speed (typically 16-18 mph) in a paceline, but now most of the groups are considerably spicier than that. Lesson learned.

Rollin’ Pearland. Heavy Rain And Lightening Stayed East, Wind Didn’t

I backed the Jeep out of the garage to drive to Pearland for the Rollin’ Pearland bike ride. Rain starting falling but I decided Pearland was about 45 miles to the south and maybe the rain would not be there. I ran into heavy rain on US59 but I continued driving. After turning onto TX 288 traffic backed up due to the freeway closure because of an accident. Slowly moving I wondered if I would make the start time. The rain slowed to a light drizzle but the sky was dark with lightening. Traffic exited onto the frontage road and then back on TX 288. A wrecker passed with a burnt and crashed Ford Mustang that looked like the car on the freeway. As I got close to Pearland the rain stopped and the streets were dry, a good sign. I parked the Jeep at the starting area at 6:30 AM with 30 minutes before the start time. I picked up my packet and went back to get the Cervelo Caledonia and me ready to ride. Glad I drove to Pearland for the ride as the weather improved.

The sky looked threatening to the east but the rain stayed away. I rolled out at 7:05 AM with the C group and the ride began. There were a few light sprinkles of rain early but as the ride progressed the sky began to clear. The route differed from last year’s due to construction. Last year I rode 43.75 miles and this year 49.29. There was one “big” climb up a railroad overpass but generally the roads were flat since this is coastal area land. I stopped at most of the rest stops more for video than necessity. At the 50 mile route turn from the 70 mile route a cyclist was stopped with a flat tire. He fixed one flat with a new tube but it flatted again. Now he was down to walking until someone picked him up. I told him I would tell someone at the next rest stop or sag that I saw which I did.

Around the 24 mile point when the route started turning back to Pearland the sky turned mostly blue but the wind increased. Riding north the headwind was strong. When I finished and checked the weather the wind was 21 mph. My legs were strong and powered me into the wind to the finish. Looking at my AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 35×15 gears the most: 1:47:14 (25.3 miles) versus the 35×13 gears 1:21:58 (20.1 miles). I think this allowed my legs to have the power for the wind.

Weather: Start 74 degrees, 88% humidity, dew point 70, thunderstorms in the area, wind NE 21 mph gusts 36 mph; Finish 85 degrees, 53% humidity, dew point 66, mostly cloudy and breezy, wind NE 21 mph. No 100+ temperature for this ride.

Strava shows 1 Personal record and 11 2nd fastest times. Four of those: PR on MRE TT (7:12), 2nd fastest time on Fight Club Sprint (1:12), 2nd fastest time on west CR60 (13:03), and 2nd fastest time on Kingsley Trinity Bay to Regents Bay (2:05).

Flat Fixed, New Saddle, Lynskey Helix For The Ride

I fixed the Lynskey Helix’s front flat tire yesterday afternoon so I rode it on today’s bike ride. I used a CO2 cartridge for the first time to air the tire up with a quick pop of the bead on the rim. I quickly turned the valve off leaving some amount of CO2 in the cartridge. Checking the tire before leaving on the ride it was firm, probably more than 80 psi that I am riding on my other bikes. This also is the first ride on a new Velo Senso TT+ saddle like the one on my Canyon Endurace but with tri-alloy rails instead of carbon. It was as comfortable as the one on the Canyon.

With all of that out of the way I rolled out at 8:52 AM beating 9 AM for the first time this week. The forecast called for a high of 105 and I wanted to get back home before that happened. I finished at 11:49 AM but it was heating up. Space City Weather thinks we are near the end of 100+ days. I like hot weather but 100+ is going overboard.

The ride went north through Kingwood, Woodridge Forest, Brooklyn Trails before reaching the US59 north frontage road. I was riding my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. I stayed on the frontage road to TX 99 where I rode to Loop 494. Loop 494 is much quieter than US59. I glanced at the construction around the Loop 494 bridge over Caney Creek and there was a lot equipment activity. Payne Road took me back to the frontage road and over Caney Creek where I made a u-turn under US59 to begin the ride back to Kingwood. Going through Valley Ranch, Briar Tree, and Oakhurst brought me closer to Kingwood. Another u-turn under US59, a short stretch on Loop 494 and I entered Kings Manor. The end was 4 miles away. I stopped at my dentist’s office to make an appointment and rode home.

This wasn’t the fastest ride on this route. My legs felt tired and the wind from the west didn’t do any favors riding back. The 32.71 miles was about average for 2023 rides and pushed my week’s total to 179.99 miles and the month to 255.77 miles (36% of the way to my 720 mile goal). Tomorrow I’m riding the Rollin’ Pearland Ride which should add about 49 miles to those totals.
