About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Rude Realization As I Clicked The Bolt Computer Into The Mount

Texbiker.net Posted on September 7, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 7, 2023

A rude realization as I clicked the Bolt computer into the mount on my Lynskey Helix bike for today’s bike ride! The front tire was flat. It only took a few seconds to move the Bolt computer to my Canyon Endurace bike standing beside the Lynskey. I’ll look at the flat tire after the ride, I thought. On Thursday I usually ride south and east to Huffman but Kingwood Park High School starts later on Thursdays and the traffic takes extra time and precaution to ride through. My solution today, ride the Reverse Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route. Instead of Kingwood Park being at the beginning of the ride it will be towards the end in the last 3 miles. I’ve biked this route just two times previously, all in 2023. Because of the reverse direction in many parts of the ride I need to pay attention to the turns and streets. The usual mileage marks don’t apply.

Riding away on the earliest start this week at 9:02 AM put me in the reverse mode for the ride. I added a couple of streets that are included in the usual direction for some variety and because I thought of them in time. Reverse streets look different. Biking south on FM 2100 to Old Atascocita Road was very different from riding north a hundred feet to my left. The bumps and rough road I memorized on Old Atascocita Road going east are completely different headed west. On the way back the road construction at FM 1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive closed the left turn lane so I had to be creative there to ride south and into Walden. On the north side of the San Jacinto River turning left into Kingwood Greens looked very different from exiting there and going south. Fortunately there was a break in the traffic to let me turn left quickly into Kingwood Greens. Biking streets in Kings Forest, Bear Branch, North Woodland Hills, Sherwood Trails, and Hunters Ridge in reverse provided views I don’t see very often. Near the end I forgot to make a turn and had to loop around on extra streets to finish at 11:41 AM. I might ride this route again next Thursday to get better on it.

City, leaders of First Presbyterian Church give differing accounts of how well project was communicated

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio ripped out four concrete barriers and reduced the size of two others in front of a downtown church just months after they were built, following pressure from a prominent real estate developer, records obtained by KSAT Investigates show.

City officials last month defended the construction project, a protected bike lane in front of First Presbyterian Church, after church leaders told KSAT the work was not communicated to them properly.

Voters approved the bike lanes as part of a larger $42 million 2017 municipal bond project.

The bike lane portion of the …

Houston’s Memorial and Buffalo Bayou Parks to be connected by forthcoming trail

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Funding from Harris County Precinct 4 will help the Houston Parks Board fill a gap between two of the city’s largest and most popular parks.

Less than 2 miles separate two of the biggest and most popular parks in Houston.

But for the city’s cyclists and pedestrians, getting between Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park feels like a long trek filled with hazards. There is no trail along the bayou, and Memorial Drive – which is lined by homes and businesses, often busy with vehicle traffic and has a narrow, shared-use sidewalk running alongside it – is the only major roadway that connects the two urban parks.

“They’re so close, yet because there’s no safe, attractive connection between them, they feel so far away from each other,” said Joe Cutrufo, the executive director of BikeHouston, a local nonprofit that advocates for cyclists.

That gap will be closing, though, as the Houston Parks Board is receiving $8.1 million to help make it happen. The Buffalo Bayou Greenway Connector project was …

No Incidents In Hot Weather Biking Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2023

Wednesday’s bike ride headed north to Community Drive and TX 99 before turning back south to ride through Valley Ranch. From Valley Ranch I rode to FM 1314 and NW to Cumberland Blvd. where the u-turn into Cumberland came back to FM 1314. Going SE the wind was from my right side to rear quarter but not a full tailwind. Trees on my right blocked some of the wind. At Old Sorters Road I left FM 1314 winding through Briar Tree and Oakhurst. All of this was my Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route. I made a few little changes such as how I entered Woodridge Forest and at Cumberland Blvd. taking the left turn lane rather than turning right and waiting for the cross traffic light to change. This all began at 9:17 AM and finished at 12:18 PM pedaling my Canyon Endurace bike.

Hot weather continues to dominate the area with the afternoon high forecast to reach 100. But I finished before that happened. No stops for ice or water today with the help of my CamelBak full of cold water. Weather: Start 86 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 77.0, a few clouds, wind S 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 57% humidity, dew point 74.6, partly cloudy, wind SW 4 mph.

No incidents during the ride. I aired up the tires to 80 psi last night to not add time to leaving this morning. This was the 7th time on the route this year. The average distance is almost 35 miles and I rode 34.21 miles today. A good start towards my 720 mile goal for September with 189.2 miles so far.
