About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Texas Fallen Outdoor promoting veteran suicide awareness through Hotter’N Hell

By Blake Hill | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The Fallen Outdoors is a non-profit that focuses on helping veterans interact with others to promote mental and physical health.

During the 2023 Hotter’N Hell Hundred The Fallen Outdoors’ Texas branch is planning an awareness campaign for veteran suicides called 22 miles for the 22 a day.

Every day 22 veterans fall victim to suicide, and in a way to honor those victims the non-profit has put together a team to ride the 25 mile route. They will stop at the 22 mile mark for a moment of silence.

“So I think as a community we need to realize the struggles that a lot of these veterans have been through, not only overseas but at home as well. You know, we need to be there for them, to not judge them, and we just need to …

200+ Mile Week String Continued. Fueled By A Blueberry Donut!

Texbiker.net Posted on August 19, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 19, 2023

Sunrise gets later as summer moves along. I started today’s bike ride at 8 AM trying to get rolling a few minutes before that. My Cervelo Caledonia bike carried me over the typical Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. This would be the twelfth bike ride on the route in 2023. I needed 12 miles to hit another 200+ mile week and today I rode 34.15 miles securing 11 weeks in a row over 200 miles. This week came in at 222.59 miles. Along with the mileage mark the hot weather continued with the forecast of 104 degrees this afternoon. I peeked at the Wichita Falls weather for next Saturday and it looks hot: 106 degrees, low humidity and clouds. Just like here. For August I’ve biked 621 miles or 78% of my 800 mile goal.

Highlights from today’s ride: numerous cyclists along the route, no flat tire, stopped at Donald’s Donuts for a blueberry cake donut and 4 cyclists were there as I rode up, finished at 10:59 AM before the temperature got out of control, and the audio in the video was good. Riding into the headwind actually had a cooling effect. After today’s ride I watched stage 5 of the Vuelta a Burgos where it looked just like here, hot and very dry. Two Strava local legends: Local Legend on Kingwood middle sprint and Local Legend on Squirrel Sprint.

Weather: Start 81 degrees, 89% humidity, dew point 77.7, partly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph; Finish 92 degrees,58% humidity, dew point 75.3, a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph. I probably will ride tomorrow (Sunday) because the temperature may be 100+ by the time I get home from church.

Not All Rides Go As Planned. Two Acts of Kindness Saved This Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 18, 2023

Not all bike rides go as planned. I rode away at 8:59 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike on the New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd route. I need to come up with a more descriptive name for this route. The last time I biked on the route was July 7th for 38.94 miles. I rode through two Kingwood Villages, Woodridge Forest and Adams Street without a problem. Taking E. Knox Street to the US59/I-69 frontage road I ran over a large rock that would’ve put me on the asphalt except for my firm grip on the handle bars. I thought the rear tire would go flat but it felt firm as I rode over the bumps on E. Knox St. My assessment was correct but not until about 3 miles later when the rear tire went flat by the unopened Amazon warehouse between FM 1314 and Community Drive. I walked to Rosewood Funeral Home for shade and quiet to find the problem. Walking just fast enough to register as movement my overall average speed dropped below 11 mph when I found some shade.

Removing the rear tire and the tube I pumped it up and found a tiny hole. I’m not known for great patching skills. While sitting my legs started cramping and I moved around to ease the pain. The nice groundskeeper that I talk to when I visit my wife’s grave came over and asked about my problem. He went inside and came back with a bottle of cold Gatorade. It tasted great and the cold was very welcomed. The first but not last act of kindness I would receive today during the ride. The tire patched I aired it up to test my work and it held air. Back in the tire I aired it up to when the bead popped onto the rim, squeezed it and was satisfied. I rode around the parking lot to check the tire before resuming the ride on the north bound frontage road.

The ride went well from that point. I made a loop through Porters Mill and stopped at the swimming pool for a short rest in the shade and water from the cold water fountain. Gene Campbell blvd. took me to FM 1314 where i turned left. This put the wind from my right rear quarter and eased my work which had been into a headwind or crosswind. No problem with the rear tire so I stopped at the Circle K store at Sorters road. Sitting in the shade with a couple of other men I ate two granola bars and a cereal bar. While I ate a young man came up asked how far and where I was biking and then handed me a big bottle of cold water. I thanked him. The second act of kindness. How amazing! These acts of kindness tied into The Upper Room Devotion I read earlier this morning, No Kindness Too Small. Praise the Lord for these two people.

Leaving Circle K for the 12+ miles back home it was hot, dry, and windy. Earlier on Gene Campbell Blvd. I said to myself, today was training for the Hotter’N Hell 100 on August 26th in Wichita Falls. When I finished at 1:05 PM my home weather station showed 99 degrees.
