About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Almost Enough San Antonio, Texas

Too. Much. Heat. Left the house intending to get 28 to make my century for the day. Decided not to die today, so I cut it short a bit. Call it rounding up or pulling forward some miles from the last two Saturdays of 100+, but either way, I’m done for today.

LSD was the plan today, at my own pace and also do SCNT for the first since they got the storm damage cleared. An interesting day out, met a few people along the way-

  • @steve Williams on Happy Trail – good to catch up with him
  • Jim Robertson on BBQ – he was doing a trash pick up walk. We visited for a out 10 minutes – had to break away – we could go for hours -@dave Mackey on SCNT. Haven’t seen Dave in a long time, so good to catch up

Other notes: I think I’ve found the side connection to Roy Burroughs Park. I’ll post details on FB forums

  • my secret connection from Nanes to Bamwood was a disaster with several big trees down. I ripped myself to shreds trying to get through and then finished up on a homeless camp back on Nanes! Had to sneak through someone’s backyard to avoid going down to 1960! I’ll contact HCFCD about that.
  • had a nice time crossing Spring Creek. Sat in the creek for a few minutes to cool off!
  • Route worked well with fuel stops – breakfast Taco on 2920, sandwich at Springwoods Exxon, and sugary drinks at Shell on Kuykendahl. A hot day, but manageable with plenty of ice water over my head!

Considering that I nearly passed out yesterday morning due to what I guess was bad dehydration the evening before, I am more than happy with how I rode today! I certainly tried to take it easy, and did my share of drafting. We had a great group of about a dozen cyclists on today’s ride. As always, I am certainly most thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me both spiritually and physically, and enabling me to return to this sport that I love, and for another great ride with wonderful men and women.?

Had to get a pic of a pretty good size group before we started this morning’s ride at the Comfort Park.

Ninth 200+ Mile Week In A Row. A Plethora Of Cyclists And Runners

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2023

I look forward to Saturday bike rides with the potential to see other cyclists out on the road. Breaking the start time trend i rolled away at 7:50 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike. The route was the typical one for Saturday, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. I changed a few streets in North Woodland Hills and South Woodland Hills Villages on the way to W. Lake Houston Parkway. It didn’t impact the distance. This route averages a little over 34 miles for the 9 previous rides in 2023. Today’s ride was 34.24 miles. This notched another 200+ mile week at 222.2 miles. Nine weeks in a row of 200+ miles. I’m on a roll! August bike ride mileage is up to 174.79 or 22% of the way to my 800 mile goal.

Many other cyclists along the route today with most of them on the east side of Lake Houston. Many of them are in the video. I saw a group of girl runners probably from Kingwood High School on Cedar Knolls Drive taking a break (in the video).

Starting early with a lower temperature is nice but the higher humidity probably offsets that. That was the case today. It was getting hot when I finished at 10:46 AM. I stopped at the Exxon store on FM 1960 and E. Lake Houston Parkway for ice and in Kingwood at the skate park I added water to my water bottle. I forgot the skate park had a water fountain until I saw it today.

Maybe the hot weather is affecting my riding. My legs are not producing power to get my average speed above 13 mph. The wind has been light though today riding west over Lake Houston the headwind felt stronger than 7 mph. Maybe they need some recovery time. Today’s bike ride weather: Start 81 degrees, 89% humidity, dew point 77.1, a few clouds, wind S 5 mph; Finish 92 degrees, 62% humidity, a few clouds, wind SW 7 mph.

Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride: A 32.2-Mile Journey

Texbiker.net Posted on August 4, 2023 by Rick AnkrumAugust 4, 2023

Today’s bike ride went north to Caney Creek before making a u-turn under US59 and heading back to the south through Valley Ranch, Briar Tree, Oakhurst, Kings Manor and back into Kingwood. I label this as my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. The average distance biking this route during 2023 is around 33 miles and today I rode 32.2 miles. It began at 8:50 AM aboard my Cervelo Caledonia bike and finished at 11:33 AM. The week miles stands at 187.95 putting me close to a 200+ mile week which should happen on tomorrow’s bike ride. I’m 18% of the way to my August 800 mile goal with 140.54 miles.

Hot weather continued with the expected high today of 100 degrees. Finishing before noon I avoided the extreme heat but it was still hot when I finished. Wind was light not providing much cooling effect. Weather for the bike ride: Start 87 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 77.6, a few clouds, wind SW 6 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 54% humidity, dew point 74.7, partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph.

The overall average speed was better today with some help from a tailwind riding to Caney Creek. I lost some on the way back to Kingwood due to the light headwind. Link to my AXS.SRAM.com ride report.
