About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New Jersey From 2008. Spring Creek and San Jacinto Bayou Greenways. July Repeat.

Texbiker.net Posted on July 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 24, 2023

Is a new jersey really new if I bought it in August 2008 but didn’t wear it until today? I think so! Yesterday I retired one Texbiker jersey and pulled out a “new” Texbiker jersey from 2008.

Today’s bike ride traversed the Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway on the way back. I rode the same greenways 3 weeks earlier which is unusual biking them twice in one month. I should ride them more often. The July 3rd ride went farther to Dennis Johnston Park. Other cyclists passed me today but not as many as July 3rd, probably because of the holiday back then. Biking the greenway affords lots of shade from all of the trees but can reduce the wind. The wind was light so the blocking wasn’t noticeable.

Rolling out at 9:02 AM I should’ve started a little earlier. The Cervelo Caledonia was ready but I moved too slowly. I managed to finish just before 1 PM at 12:58. The sun was hot but the temperature had not reached the maximum for the day. I stopped at Pundt Park for about 10 minutes before heading back to the I-69/US59 trailhead. The granola bar snack helped on the ride back. Because of the heat and longer than usual ride I used my CamelBak for hydration and it had a tiny bit of cool water left at the end.

I needed 78 miles to reach July’s 800 mile goal and today’s 44.34 miles closes in on it, now leaving 34 miles. I plan on biking that far tomorrow.

Heat Lets Up For Sunday Ride. 7th Consecutive 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on July 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 23, 2023

Today was the first Sunday bike ride in July. I rolled away at 1:21 PM after getting home from church. The temperature hovered around 90 degrees for a change and the wind was barely moving at 3 mph. My week mileage stood at just over 217 so I wanted to bike at least 13 miles to close out the week. I exceeded that goal by almost 5 miles with 17.97 miles. The ride stayed in Kingwood following streets and trails. The last time I did that was June 11th aboard the same bike, my Lynskey Helix. In fact, according to SportTracks all of the rides on the Kingwood Streets & Trails route has been on a Lynskey since 2021. Weather for today’s ride: Start 91 degrees, 59% humidity, dew point 74.3, partly cloudy, wind 3 mph; Finish 94 degrees, dew point 73.4, partly cloudy, wind 4 mph.

I rode each day this week finishing before the extreme heat each day except for today. Only 78 more miles to reach my 800 mile goal for the month. I rode the Canyon Endurace 3 times, the Cervelo Caledonia 2 days, and the Lynskey Helix 2 days. The average ride was 33.6 miles.

Cyclist conquers coast-to-coast adventure

Travis Rosenau | www.nujournal.com

Helget, right, stops inside the Bike World Bike Shop, now named the Trek Bicycles, in San Antonio, Texas during his ride on June 3.

NEW ULM — With two wheels and what he could carry with him, New Ulm’s Zach Helget recently completed a daunting bicycle trek that spanned eight states.

The avid cyclist and 2019 New Ulm Cathedral grad’s 39-day ride saw him begin by flying to San Diego, California.

Dipping his tire into the shores of the Pacific Ocean officially kicked off Helget’s ride, a ride that saw him cover more than 2,700 miles. The ride ended at Jacksonville Beach, Florida, on June 20 as Helget dipped his tire in the Atlantic, but the adventure was anything but a stroll — or ride — in the park.

Helget, 22, first got into cycling a couple of years ago, making this trip all the more impressive for the New Ulm native. …

Army Corps of Engineers plans cyclist bypass closure at Benbrook Lake

by Juan Salinas II | fortworthreport.org

The Fort Worth District of the Army Corps of Engineers plans to close a cyclist bypass near Benbrook Lake starting Oct. 1.

Corps of Engineers officials made the decision to maintain safety because of an uptick in recurring incidents with cyclists and campers. Fort Worth cycling community members say they are trying to find alternatives to the closure. …

Busy week on campus and Saturday morning the woods call. I love the flow and rhythm, through trees and over rocks. Just enough scratches to connect to the moment and recall later today. pic.twitter.com/JHwVlDcF5P

The “cold” front came through (76 degrees!) this morning and I gave the road bike a go. Think this is the first time on the bike this year…my heart and lungs may be in Peloton shape, but definitely not in road bike shape!!! The struggle was real!

Had a chance to take this C2 Koko out for the a short spin. I honestly should have just invested in building the orbea frame sitting on the floor.

It's essentially a cervelo with the dumbest seatpost and most fragile mana bar combo.

Thank God I still have my Pinarello. pic.twitter.com/2SUE5SeZL0

Biking Adventures: Overcoming Tech Glitches and Surpassing Weekly Mileage Goals

Texbiker.net Posted on July 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 22, 2023

Saturday bike rides have a ring about them as the week winds down and the anticipation of seeing other cyclists along the route. Most Saturday rides follow one of two routes, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden or Atascocita – Spanish Cove – Huffman. Today I rode the first route. These routes get me to FM 1960 sooner delaying the loop through Walden until returning back over Lake Houston to see other cyclists. I started seeing other cyclists as I neared the east side of Lake Houston on FM 1960 then on Fairlake Lane and Old Atascocita Road. Back in Kingwood 4 cyclists passed me. The week total stood at 183 miles as I began the ride and the route averages 34 miles. Starting at 7:46 AM, the earliest start this week, aboard my Canyon Endurace bike the Bolt computer failed to record the first 1/2 mile until I pressed the paused button. To compensate I added a few streets to get the distance closer to what it should’ve been. At the 10:32 AM finish the total distance came at 34.07 miles. This put the week at 217.25 miles and 703.99 for July, 97 miles to reach my 800 mile goal.

Starting before 8 AM the humidity was higher than the temperature, 85% versus 82 degrees. For a few miles it felt cool but once I warmed up and the sweating started my kit was quickly soaked. The wind was light as first but increased to 10 mph when I finished punishing my legs some. It wasn’t my fastest ride on the route but I was okay with it. Weather overall: Start 82 degrees, 85% humidity, dew point 76.5, a few clouds, wind W 4 mph; Finish 88 degrees, 67% humidity, dew point 76.1, partly cloudy, wind W 10 mph.
