About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

By Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

The study based its findings on fatal bike crashes.

In a study that named the best and worst cities for cycling, San Antonio came out on top and ended in the bottom 10. Clever Real Estate released its report on Monday, July 17, naming the Alamo City as the 7th least bike-friendly city in the United States.

Clever Real Estate ranked 50 of the most-populous metros using 15 different factors, which were weighted and combined to produce the final results. Some of the factors included the number of bike trails per 100,000 residents, the number of …

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas – Brig. Gen. Christopher R. Amrhein, commander of Air Force Recruiting Service, sent off the Air Force Cycling Team’s Texas riders with encouraging words on July 20, 2023, at the command’s headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.

Cervelo Caledonia, Strava Showdown: A Cyclist’s Quest for Local Legend Status

Texbiker.net Posted on July 21, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 21, 2023

Most days I have planned the route for the bike ride but today I couldn’t make up my mind where to ride. I considered going to the Spring Creek Greenway and Jesse Jones Park but that wasn’t as many miles as I wanted to ride. Then I calculated extending that to Carter Park but that was not quite 30 miles. I remembered losing the Strava local legend yesterday on the Adams St. Westbound segment to Giovanni Carrion. That made up my mind so I chose the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route and modified it to include that segment. This would put me equal to Giovanni at 12 efforts in the last 90 days.

A run to drop off an envelope delayed the start time to 9:09 AM. For a change the temperature was a couple of degrees lower than the other bike rides this week when I rode away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. It even felt a little cooler later when I made the turn to go under US59/I-69 at Caney Creek in the shade. Earlier the forecast said it might hit 100 again today but it dropped a couple degrees by the time I got back home at 11:40 AM. Weather during the bike ride: Start 83 degrees, 78% humidity, dew point 75.8, a few clouds, wind W 4 mph; Finish 93 degrees, 60% humidity, partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph.

Breaking down Austin’s experiment on Barton Springs Road

By Nathan Bernier | www.kut.org

Austin is set to embark on a year-long experiment along a bustling half-mile stretch of Barton Springs Road, an area best known for local restaurants like Chuy’s, Baby Acapulco, Juiceland, Juliet Italian Kitchen and Green Mesquite BBQ.

The city hopes to enhance safety by reducing the number of car lanes from two to one in each direction between South Lamar Boulevard and Azie Morton Road. The construction likely won’t be done until late October or early November. Then, the clock will start ticking on the 12-month trial period. …

The lost freedom of bike hikes

By Tom Purcell | tylerpaper.com

I dream of recreating some of the epic bike hikes I enjoyed as a kid back in the 1970s.

My used Murray five-speed spyder-bike with the high handlebars only cost $25, but it was one of the coolest bikes of the age.

Man, I loved that bike.

During the long summer days, I rode with a group of kids.

We’d ride for two or three hours in the county park, then make our way to McDonald’s for an orange drink and apple pie, which I paid for by borrowing a handful of coins out of my dad’s penny jar.

It’s funny how I can …

Canyon Endurace, Fairlake Lane Encounter During My Regular Route

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2023

Nothing fancy about today’s bike ride. I changed a few streets before leaving Kingwood but after that I stuck to the usual ones on the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. The bike rotation came to the Canyon Endurace for today. The start was a few minutes earlier than yesterday at 8:42 AM and I finished at 11:22 AM avoiding the hotter time of the day. Riding 34.37 miles today moved the week’s total to 151.55 setting up a 200+ mile week. I need to ride 161.7 miles to hit my 800 mile goal for July. A group of 4 cyclists passed me when I turned onto Fairlake Lane.

Light wind continued and headwinds weren’t too bad even riding across Lake Houston. The breeze cooled me a little when I rode through shade. Another day with the high around 100 late afternoon. Weather while I was on the bike: Start 85 degrees, 78% humidity, dew point 77.3, a few clouds, wind SW 5 mph; Finish 91 degrees, 60% humidity, dew point 75.3, mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph.
