About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Citywide trail feasibility study begins in Katy

By Asia Armour | communityimpact.com

As one of the major components of the parks, recreation and trails master plan, Katy officials have begun planning a walkable, bikeable trail system that will weave through the entire city.

The details

At a June 26 meeting, City Council members approved Phase 1 of a trail feasibility study to connect neighborhoods with parks and other activity centers within the city, costing $14,930. The trail or series of trails would wind from Leyendecker Landing—a passive park dedicated to the city’s former engineer and located north near Pitts and Morton roads—to Avenue C and Third Street in the downtown area of Katy.

The city will use its 2021 park improvement bonds to pay for the feasibility study, per the …

City buys parkland for $10

By Kevin Limiti | kdhnews.com

The Killeen City Council this week approved 5-0 to purchase 1.3 acres for a greenway trail that is intended to run through a recently rezoned property that is dedicated for retail use.

The land is located to the east of East Trimmier Road and north of Andalucia Lane in south Killeen.

According to the deed, the land was purchased by the city of Killeen for a grand total of $10. The council approved the purchase at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The point of the greenway trail, via the city of Killeen’s presentation on the resolution, is to connect to the Purser Family Hike and Bike Trail to the east and site of the future Preserve at Thousand Oaks to the west, of which there was no information on Thursday. …

I almost deleted this activity, but it measured 1 second faster on the C-MOB segment, so I had to keep it! And by the way: Allons enfants de la patrie! ?? (Happy Bastille Day!)

Ride South? Ride North? Decisions! The Bike Ride Went North

Texbiker.net Posted on July 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 14, 2023

I was trying to think of a different route to ride today. Maybe south to Balmoral? North to SH 242? I decided to ride the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route to the north expecting the railroad crossing construction at Roman Forest Blvd. to be finished; it was. The Canyon Endurace bike was the bike for today. The last time on this route, June 5th, I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. I changed some of the roads today starting at the first mile but the 36.63 miles was average for the five previous 2023 rides. I’ve biked 185.65 miles so far this week making a 200+ mile week looming with tomorrow’s bike ride. I’m 57% of the way to my 800 mile goal for July with 452.56 miles. The ride began at 8:36 AM and ended at 11:38 AM.

7-14-2023 SportTracks 2023 Rides History New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch

Riding in Tavola I rearranged some of the streets but nothing new. I didn’t ride Aregosta Parkway to Roman Forest Blvd. to avoid the little uphill on Roman Forest Blvd. to US59. On Briar Berry Lane the route turned left into Auburn Trails to get to US59. The frontage road took me to Bentwood Oaks Drive to enter Oakhurst and onto Northpark Drive. Earlier when I exited Woodridge Forest on Adams Street I earned the Strava Local Legend on Adams St. Westbound with my 11th ride in the last 90 days. My Strava PR puts me at 44/114 for the segment. I didn’t know that many people rode it.

Excessive heat warning motivated me to get started and finish before the hottest time of the day. Weather for the ride: Start 83 degrees, 84% humidity, dew point 77.9, mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 60% humidity, dew point 77.9, a few clouds, wind variable 7 mph. The ride south from Roman Forest Blvd. into a headwind was hard using the 35×15 gears most of the way to Valley Ranch Parkway. I think the wind was stronger than 7 mph. I stopped at the 7 Eleven to refill my water bottle with ice and water. Link to AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

San Antonio bicycle retailer Bike World closes after 51 years

By Brandon Rodriguez | www.sacurrent.com

The five shops will reopen as Trek Bicycles on July 19.

Bike World has been a pillar of San Antonio’s cycling community since it opened in 1971. However, after more than five decades, owner Whit Snell is peddling on to other ventures.

Bike World’s five shops closed July 10 and will reopen as Trek Bicycles on July 19, operating as retail units of Wisconsin-based manufacturer and distributor Trek, one of the world’s dominant bike brands.

Snell revealed his plans for the Bike World chain in a recent Instagram post. In his post, he considered the matter carefully before deciding to retire.

Trek’s acquisition of Bike World shouldn’t come as a shock. Large-scale manufacturers …

Final days for public input on I-30 East Corridor Project that would add lanes to reduce congestion

By Vince Sims | www.nbcdfw.com

Improvements are being considered to reduce congestion on I-30 in Dallas. That’s part of the idea behind TxDOT’s I-30 East Corridor Project. It’s about five miles stretching from the I-45 junction to Ferguson Road.

If you’ve ever driven the I-30 corridor on the east side of downtown Dallas, you probably describe it like one driver, Maribel Delcampo. …

… “That would bring the total number of bridges in that corridor to 22 that we would be working on,” Mitchell said. “So that would be giving pedestrian access, bicycle access, and really helping connect across the interstate.”

Community survey launched for City of San Antonio’s new Bike Network Plan

Author: Zack Briggs | www.kens5.com

The city hired a Florida-based consulting firm to conduct the study over the next two years.

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio has launched a new initiative geared toward improving bike safety and infrastructure with a major focus on community engagement.

“Really, it’s about creating a network that has all of those connections, connections from street to street, connections from street to trail and this will also give us an opportunity to look at a health impact assessment as well as create funding strategies,” said Catherine Hernandez, the city’s interim transportation director. …

A New Taillight and 35 Miles Before the Afternoon Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2023

The heat continues and an early start on the bike ride gets me out and home before the hottest time of the day. I started 15 minutes later that my other rides this week rolling out at 8:58 AM. I got up later than I planned and just before the ride getting a new MagicShine SeeMee300 taillight on the Cervelo Caledonia took longer than I expected. The bike ride went south and east to Spanish Cove Drive on FM 2100 using my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive course. Biking 35.5 miles today boosted the week’s total to 149.1 miles. That is the average distance for all the 2023 rides using the route. I finished at 11:43 AM avoiding the afternoon heat. I saw three cyclists at Atascocita shores Drive and FM 1960. They rode west and turned north as I headed east.

Weather: Start 85 degrees, 81% humidity, dew point 78.4, mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; Finish 94 degrees, 63% humidity, dew point 79.0, partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

My legs felt good today and the headwind wasn’t gusting like yesterday. My AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 25 rear derailleur shifts, 1:38:15 (23.5 miles) in the 35×13 gears and 36:57 (8 miles) in the 35×15 gears.
