Back in Kingwood after a trip to Lancaster, OH, to see my youngest grandson graduate from high school. With 3 days already gone in June I needed a longer than usual Saturday bike ride to make up for not riding two days. My goal for June is 800 miles or 27 miles per day. The route to add miles above the 27 was Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood. I changed up some streets and added a couple before leaving Kingwood riding south on W. Lake Houston Parkway. The ride started at 8:43 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike hoping to see other cyclists like many Saturdays. I did see cyclists but I didn’t capture all of them in the video. By the time I finished at 12:12 PM I biked 44.9 miles, or 1.68 days towards my goal.
It wasn’t smooth biking though. I stopped in Town Center to adjust the GoPro mount. While getting off the bike I lost my balance getting my right foot high enough to clear the rear tire, danced around for a couple of seconds and ended up on the concrete. No damages to me or the Cervelo other than looking uncoordinated if anyone was watching.
Last Tuesday while getting the Cervelo rear brake fixed I looked at the rear cassette and chain and realized they long overdue to be replaced. Last night I replaced the rear cassette, chain, and the 35T chain ring. They were all the original parts from when I bought the Cervelo and had almost 7900 miles on them. The mechanic at the Rusty Spoke Bike Shop said he couldn’t remember seeing a chain with that much wear on the gauge. The cassette teeth were thin from the wear. Below is the new drive train.
Shifting gears now is smooth like a knife through hot butter. I promise to not wait so long the next time. The problem is the slow wear is not dramatic and easy to forget.
Getting used to the high humidity on today’s ride took some time. On my 2 rides in Lancaster the humidity was around 20% to 40%, rare for Houston. Today’s weather for the ride: Start 76 degrees, humidity 81%, dew point 70.1, mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph; Finish 86 degrees, humidity 57%, dew point 69.4, mostly cloudy, wind calm. Light wind was good.

We recently connected with FERRELL SURETTE JR and have shared our conversation below.
FERRELL, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
When I was a child I had nothing. Being that I came from a broken home filled with domestic violence and at times no family income I had to make do with what I had. It was a struggle but I was able to overcome the challenges. That being said as I grew older I found I had a talent that could be valuable to the community and began finding inspiration all around that allowed me to grow my knowledge and share my experiences with others.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself? …

Austin’s Walk Bike Roll plan will head to the City Council for approval this summer, a move that would update urban trails and sidewalks while expanding the city’s bicycle lane network to more than 1,200 miles.
Why it matters: Serious injuries and fatal crashes among cyclists and pedestrians have climbed in recent years, and additional crossings, sidewalks and bike lanes can make traveling safer.
By the numbers: There were, on average, 3.6 fatal bicycle crashes in Austin per million residents between 2017-2021, according to recent data from the League of American Bicyclists via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — up from 2.7 fatal bike crashes per million residents from 2012-2016. …

On May 25th, we both testified before the Travis County Bond Advisory Committee in support of funding multi-modal transportation in Travis County. The committee is considering how to spend a $450 million bond on transportation and parks. The committee is proposing that the vast majority of transportation funds go to widen roads. We advocated that the County should invest at least an equal amount in “multi-modal” transportation projects such as bike lanes, sidewalks, and transit.

Reason for Cycling: I’m cycling for those who have loved the sport, but were robbed of it due to ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
I started cycling as a young child, inspired by my father’s skills on the bike. Watching him effortlessly ride with no hands or navigate our bike trailer through challenging mountain biking trails inspired me to discover what the magic of two wheels could deliver.
As an adult, my cycling journey began after I completed college. It was …

Fun ride today! This route is a bit of a pilgrimage early in the season for me to check my climbing legs. One of these years, I likely won’t be able to do the monster climb fully seated, but that’s not this year. Lots of critters today — elk, antelolope, zebra, llamas, alpacas, oryx, and, for the first time in two years, the giraffes! Also got to pat a sweet, little ass…been years since I got to do that (see video).
