About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Six Suggestions for TMC’s Mobility Plan

Jeff Balke | www.houstonpress.com

Riding along the north side of the Texas Medical Center, I felt pretty safe. A pair of helicopters buzzed above the buildings generating a level of noise only rivaled by the line of work trucks in front of me. It was noisy and busy, but not awful. Then, I turned a corner.

In recent weeks, the Texas Medical Center created a survey designed to ask pedestrians and cyclists what they could do to improve conditions in and around the sprawling complex to add to a new master plan they are creating around mobility. So, it seemed only responsible that I hop on my bike and find out what riding around TMC is like for myself. …

Family identifies West Texas boy hit by pickup

By Sydnee Batzlaff | www.kwtx.com

BORGER, Texas (KFDA) – We’re learning more about the juvenile who was hit by a truck Friday afternoon.

The family has identified him as 12-year-old Conor Waide.

The City of Borger says officials were called about a truck colliding into Waide while he was riding his bike near 5th Street and Coble Street.

Waide was flown by helicopter to an Amarillo hospital. He has now been transferred to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

The family says cervical damage was found, so an MRI was done to get a better assessment.

The results show the family is probably looking at a spinal fusion and that there is going to be some major rehab involved.

They say the next 72 hours are critical and by Monday, they should know the next course of action and may be woken up out of sedation.

Waide also has a fracture in one leg and a broken clavicle, along with fluid and bruising to his right lung.

His father says he has shown signs of improvement since arriving in Lubbock, however it will still be a long recovery.

The family continues to ask the community for prayers.

Deven Clarke | www.click2houston.com

A Houston area man says he ended up in the Intensive Care Unit after being jumped and robbed while biking on the Columbia Tap trail, and now, his family members are sending a warning to others.

The man is still in the hospital and the people responsible are still out there.

“What he does when he has any free time is he rides trails all around the Houston area,” his wife said.

They asked us not to identify them out of safety concerns but want to let the public know what happened around 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon. …

Author: Chloe Alexander, Maria Aguilera | www.khou.com

The last two incidents happened over Memorial Day weekend and were described as "very serious and very violent."

HOUSTON — Houston police said they are increasing their presence at a bike trail in Third Ward after at least five people were attacked and robbed this month.

The last two incidents happened over Memorial Day weekend, and according to Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Satterwhite, they were "very serious and very violent."

Both victims had to be taken to the hospital after the attacks. One of them was even shot in the leg.

Satterwhite said most of the incidents at Columbia Tap Rail-Trail, with the exception of one, have happened in the late evening and going into the middle of the night. The attacks seem to …

Houston police increasing presence along Columbia Tap Trail after string of violent attacks against cyclists

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Security features such as increased lighting, surveillance cameras and call boxes also are coming to the part of the trail in the Third Ward area, according to Houston City Council member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz.

Since moving to a home near the Columbia Tap Trail more than a decade ago, Ed Pettitt said he has utilized it on an almost daily basis. He takes his bicycle or scooter on the trail to run errands and commute to nearby Texas Southern University, where he is a doctoral student and also works as a graduate research assistant.

Lately, though, Pettitt has been hesitant to use the well-worn hike-and-bike trail that cuts through Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood. It has been the site of five violent attacks against cyclists during the last two weeks, with four people having been robbed and another having been shot during an …

Lancaster Road + Bike Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2023

Not a good start on today’s bike ride. First, the Bolt computer did not show 3 sec average watts. This required powering off the Bolt and restarting it. After it reloaded the 3/10’s of a mile I rode it was displaying the watts. Then I noticed the rear disc brake was not braking. I squeezed the brake lever all the way to the handle bar but kept moving. I hesitated for a few seconds about continuing the ride but decided the front brake would be enough since I was going to ride on the shoulder of N. Memorial Drive (Lancaster, OH) and then on the bike trails I used Saturday. This time I hoped to not make any wrong turns on the trails.

The ride began at 12:27 PM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I made one loop around River Valley Mall, climb a hill up to the traffic light at N. Memorial Drive. Left through the traffic light there was a wide but littered shoulder. I rode to Coonpath Road NW and made the u-turn to ride back to Ety Road. Ety Road took me to the trailhead. I kept the speed low because of the rear brake and the occasional people riding and walking. This time I made all of the correct turns and no excursions away from the trails. I was prepared for the gravel in Martens Park and saw the reason for the detour, a bridge was closed with a barrier. At the end of the trail I made a u-turn at Kroger and headed back finishing at 2:46 PM.

I’m going to check with a local bike shop about the rear brake. Hopefully it is a quick and easy fix.

‘Excitement On a Well Beaten Path’ Southern Tier East to West

By S. Crocker | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Fabens TX – Anthony TX

Saturday May 27, 2023 Drifted on over to the gas station across the street for coffee… nice! I like coffee in the morning without pedaling for 2+ hours to get it!

My mission today was to have Cafe coffee and food, and to check the two bike shops in El Paso on my way through.

The first bike shop was actually a Cafe and bike shop in one! How about that!

Well, Hunger struck early, so I stopped at a burger joint -not realizing how close I was to the bike shop… then traveled to the bike shop and had a second lunch a half hour later! Yep, things are tough.

Camping options are scarce, so off to a hotel in Anthony.

Another flat! Drat! This one was the front tire. Fortunately it went low a couple hundred yards from the hotel. A quick pump up to get there and voila!

Anthony TX – Radium Springs TX

Sunday May 28, 2023 Packing up and found the front tire low again… argh! Went over it with a fine tooth comb and even had my glasses on! Dismantle find the leak, and the cause, test in the sink and install.

After a cup of the good stuff to give it some time to see if the tire leaks down, from the gas station next door I hit the road. And the front tire went low after a half hour.

Once again, behind another gas station, completely dismantle find more likely suspects, one at the correlating spot on the tube, and re install. Have another cup of coffee to wait for possible leak down.
