About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Injured bicyclist rescued on hiking trail near Lake Texoma

By Garrett Stringfellow | www.kxii.com

SHERWOOD SHORES, Texas (KXII) – On Saturday, a man was rescued from the Cross Timbers Hiking Trail on Lake Texoma after he was injured in a bicycle accident.

“He reported he was injured in his hip and wasn’t able to get up,” Sherwood Shores Volunteer Fire Chief Tim Bilderback said. “Fortunately, we were able to retrieve coordinates from the county of his phone, so we knew exactly where he was on a map.”

Even though they knew where he was, Bilderback says that spot on the trail is hard to access.

“It’s a 13.6 mile long trail,” he said. “It’s very narrow … the best way is to come in by boat so that’s why we partnered with Tow Boat US to take us in.”

While it took half an hour to find him, that actually ended up being the easy part.

“We were able to get him on …

Texan cyclists stop in Whitehorse on 6,400-km charity ride

Jake Howarth | www.yukon-news.com

Cyclists on three routes converged in Whitehorse prior to riding to the Alaska border together

Seventy-five Texans cycled through Whitehorse on July 25 on a 4,000-mile (6,437-kilometre) journey to raise funds for cancer research.

Students from the University of Texas at Austin embarked on a 70-day ride from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska. Organized by the Texas 4000 for Cancer program, the event is touted by organizers as “the world’s longest annual charity bike ride.”

Three teams of 25 cyclists pedalled across the United States, starting from Texas. They journeyed through the desert of the American Southwest, traversed the Rocky Mountains, and crossed the Ozark Mountains.

All three teams met at …

Rebuilding Strength: A 30.82-Mile Ride on Familiar Roads

Texbiker.net Posted on August 1, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 1, 2024

I continue to work on returning to the fitness level before the interruption of Hurricane Beryl and health. Third bike ride in a row increasing the distance. My neck and shoulder muscles are complaining less at the end of the ride thank goodness. Today I rode south and east on the Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway route. The last time I rode this route was November 7th, 2023. The roads are part of other routes so nothing new there, just this combination. I rode 30.82 miles eclipsing yesterday’s mileage. Looking back at the ride history for this route the average distance is about 30 miles. I have a shot at 100 miles for the week which will help me with the August goal of 904 miles. Today I started at 10:25 AM and finished at 1:07 PM. August weather is here. Weather: Start 87 degrees, humidity 70%, dew point 75.9, a few clouds, wind S 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, humidity 62%, dew point 76.8, partly cloudy, wind E 6 mph.

More of the Volta do Portugal with stage 7 today. (correcting my stage number error from yesterday) Great scenery.

Called on more’: Private investigators look into Austin burglaries

by: Brianna Hollis | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Will Black, the general manager of Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop off of Lamar Boulevard, said he has “the greatest job in the world.” Will Black is the general manager of Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop.

Pictured in the photo here, Black said he has worked at bike shops for 43 years.

But lately, a recent crime spurt has taken some of his focus away from what he loves doing at the shop.

“They’ll break a window, come in, grab an arm full of stuff. Not only is that a big distraction for the shop, there’s a cost involved,” Black said. …

Breakfast and Biking: Stage 6 Inspiration for a 26.59-Mile Journey

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 1, 2024

I watched stage 6 of the Volta do Portugal while eating breakfast. I paused the race with 20km to go to get ready to ride. I wasn’t sure if my neck and shoulder muscles would do better today. I think the problem partially came from hunching my shoulders so today I tried to keep my arms down and elbows in. I chose a northerly route, Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch. I knew it would be longer than yesterday’s ride but I didn’t look up previous rides to see how much. Checking after the ride the average distance around 27 miles and today I rode 26.59 miles. I started at 10:52 AM and finished at 1:26 PM. My neck muscles did much better today. Weather: Start 88 degrees, humidity 72%, dew point 77.7, mostly cloudy with haze, wind S 8 mph; Finish 93 degrees, humidity 57%, dew point 75.5, a few clouds, wind S 12 mph.

This closes out July’s rides and I fell short of my 930 mile goal with only 250 miles. Between Hurricane Beryl and a health problem the 250 miles is better than I expected.
