I thought today’s bike ride would normal but to add some variety I changed the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route a little. I rolled away at 10:18 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. This was a little later than I wanted but okay. Too many things to do before leaving. I changed the streets through Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Bear Branch Village. When I reached Pinehurst Trail Drive I turned to the right to get to the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail to ride from W. Lake Houston Parkway to Farmingham Road instead. Riding east over Lake Houston I saw another cyclist stopped I thought to repair a flat tire. Traffic was heavy so I didn’t cross over to see if I could help. At FM2100 I decided not to ride south to Spanish Cove Drive and turned north on FM2100. From Huffman I rode west on FM1960 back over Lake Houston. I turned right onto Atascocita Shores Drive. At the second street I caught up with the cyclist I saw on the causeway. I stopped to see if I could help. He had used all of his CO2 cartridges after patching the rear tire. I offered my pump. His name is Mark Williams. While he removed the rear tire and put a tube in we chatted about biking. With the tube in and pumped up he was ready to ride. I rode on and he passed me around Sunny Shores Drive. What started as a typical bike ride turned into a nice visit with Mark and helping him so he wouldn’t have to walk all the way back to Kingwood. A great day! I finished the ride at 2:08 PM.
A 102-acre purchase adds another link to the endeavor that will connect both cities by 2036.
The Great Springs Project aims to someday create a whole new route between San Antonio and Austin, without driving a mile on I-35. And it’s not for people in a rush, either.
That’s because those traveling this route won’t be driving a car. They’ll be riding a bike, or walking.
The Great Springs Project’s Emma Lindrose-Siegel explained that it “is a nonprofit organization incorporated in Texas with a two-fold mission. The first is to build a hike and bike trail connecting the four great springs of Central Texas from the Alamo to the Capitol.” …

The League of American Bicyclists has released its annual Bicycle Friendly Community Public Survey, which includes Richardson. The survey aims to gauge a national census of Americans’ experiences and perceptions of riding a bike in different communities across the U.S. Results from the survey will help the League as it determines a future ranking for Richardson’s “bike-friendly” status.
About the Survey
This year, nearly 100 communities submitted applications to the League’s Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) program. Input from Richardson residents will help the League better understand current bicycling conditions and identify potential areas for improvement in the community. Distractions abound to delay starting a bike ride. This morning I messed around with a new computer and didn’t start the ride as early as I planned. Rather than starting before 9 AM the ride began at 9:44 AM. I chose a northerly route taking me farther north than I’ve rode since July 7th, Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood. The route averages about 33 miles and I covered 32.4 miles. To reach my goal for the month I need to ride 29.2 miles every day. I am behind that pace now but hope to make up the deficit a little each day. Once I left Kingwood I didn’t see much debris from the hurricane but I did see several trucks hauling debris. I limited my max gears to the 35×15 on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike as I rebuild my fitness. No neck or shoulder muscle pain today so I’m making progress. I finished at 12:28 PM before the heat maxed out. Several days this week could hit 100+.

Last week, while housesitting for my wife’s friends who live near Helotes, I thought I’d make a quick trip up Interstate 10 to Boerne to check out the city’s small network of public trails.
