I renewed my quest to find unusual Zwift routes to ride. Today I went to ZwiftInsider.com and looked at the Rebel Routes. There are numerous ones to choose from and I selected the Watopia Spiral Into The Volcano. The full route is 34.6 miles but I planned on riding around 25 miles to avoid the big climb in the last 2 to 3 miles. ZwiftInsider.com listed the turn-by-turns and I printed them off to keep track and make the turns when needed.
The route begins at the spawning point in downtown using the Volcano Flat route. After starting the ride I rode under the banner and made a u-turn to setup the turn-by-turns. According to the instructions there are only 6 manual turns with the rest following a route. But the turn-by-turn list didn’t say which ones were manual and I didn’t understand that when a turn comes and only one option pops up in Zwift there may be a turn hidden that I should take. On my next Zwift Rebel Route ride I check all of the turn pop ups for options.
With that mistake I got off the route several turns into the ride. I’m not sure which turn I didn’t take but I rode numerous times on portions of the Volcano Circuit and Volcano Circuit CCW, Italian Villas, and Downtown. The video shows all of the turns I took. I don’t remember riding on Desert Flats and the Epic KOM. I probably missed those turns.
The route I rode included 607 feet of climbing, versus the 1064 feet for the complete route. I stopped after 25.21 miles. Strava shows these top results: PR on Volcano Flat Reverse 1 Lap (27:07) and 2nd fastest time on Volcano Flat Reverse 1 Lap (27:09). My pace partner accompanied me on these.
