About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

In Front Of The Front. Started Kinda Early, Finished In Time

Texbiker.net Posted on February 8, 2023 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 8, 2023

Nothing to slow me down on starting today’s bike ride. Four days in a row riding outside in early February is good. The temperature was in the mid 70’s and mostly cloudy. The big weather item: strong wind. I decided to ride the same route as Monday when I had the Bolt computer problem to confirm the mileage that didn’t get recorded. I chose a different bike, my Lynskey Helix. Though the temperature was 74 I wore a long sleeve jersey and a wind jacket because of the strong wind and the likelihood that the wind coming off Lake Houston would be chilly. That was a good decision. The lake wind was chilly, more so riding west than east. When I go back to Kingwood the wind direction shifted more to the west as the slow moving cool front approached. I was glad I started at 10:12 AM and finished at 12:45 PM before the front rolled in. As I write this the temperature dropped from 78 when I finished to 55 degrees.

When the wind is from the SE like today the hard part of the bike ride on the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route is getting to Old Atascocita Road and FM 2100. When I reach that point I turn back to Kingwood with the wind becoming less of a problem. Riding north on FM 2100 the tailwind pushed me along lowering my pedaling effort. But the ride west on FM 1960 from Huffman the wind was from my left side to left front quarter and the gusts while I was over Lake Houston moved my bike around when they hit. The passing traffic didn’t provide any break from the wind like other times. The ride east over the lake was easier with the wind coming from my right rear quarter. Also the concrete bridge wall blocked some of the wind.

Back in Kingwood I set another Strava PR on Kings Crossing North (1:38). This is the same PR segment I recorded a new PR on Monday. I improved by 1 second. I’m 1 second slower than Bob Bixby who is in my age group on Stava. Craig Prejean has the record at 53 seconds. Data from AXS.SRAM.com.

Sugar Land breaks ground on $3.3M trail connecting master-planned First Colony community

Juhi Varma | www.houstonchronicle.com

The First Colony trail project will include 10-foot-wide connections from the Lexington Boulevard-Austin Parkway intersection to the Woodstream Trail, and a below-grade crossing at Sweetwater Boulevard. Pedestrian bridges will be constructed over Ditch A at the Ditch D intersection and Sweetwater Blvd and over Ditch C at Austin Parkway and Mesquite Park.

Construction has begun on a $3.26 million project to create a connected trail network within Sugar Land’s First Colony neighborhood.

The Jan. 31 ground breaking came 10 years after City Council approved the First Colony Trail and Pedestrian Bridges Project as part of a $31.4 million parks bond program approved in 2013. The project is expected to be completed in May, according to city documents.

The work will provide …

Work intended to connect East New Hope Drive between Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Sam Bass Road in Cedar Park began in mid-October. Once construction is completed, the new road will be a divided four-lane roadway with a 110-foot right of way, raised medians, traffic signals, LED streetlights, bike lanes, sidewalks and stormwater controls.

Richardson is finalizing its goals for future transportation infrastructure projects to improve travel throughout the city without a car, according to a presentation on the upcoming Active Transportation Plan given during the Feb. 6 City Council work session.

Friend & Foe: Wind! Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2023 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 7, 2023

The brightest thing about today’s bike ride was my orange wind jacket with the mostly cloudy sky. No technology problems today. Glad I broke the string of those. I rode out at 10:47 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike to ride the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. The challenge would be the strong SE 17 to 16 mph wind on the way back from Caney Creek. In the video you can see the clouds and a couple of times when a blue sky appeared. I’m glad I wore a long sleeve jersey under that orange wind jacket because the wind made it feel cooler than the 70 to 74 degrees during the ride. I got concerned when I felt a few sprinkles as I rode on Valley Ranch Parkway but they didn’t follow me for long.

Below is a comparison of the last 12 rides on this route. Today’s 32.56 miles is about the average distance for the other 11 rides. The wind kept my overall average speed below average.

2-7-2023 SportTracks Last 12 Bike Rides Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood

Most of the ride to Caney Creek I had the wind at my back with a few roads putting at as a side wind. After riding under US59 to begin the ride back to Kingwood the wind was hard to pedal into. The challenging places were the US59 frontage road south of FM 1485 to Valley Ranch Parkway and Valley Ranch Parkway riding south of Texas 99 overpass with a small incline to add to the effort. In Briar Tree and Oakhurst the trees and houses buffered the wind some. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the gear usage and power.

Church reaching community annually through ‘Bikes and Bibles’ giveaway

Southern Baptist Texan | thebaptistpaper.org

Nearly a decade ago a group of men from First Baptist Church Celina, Texas, went through a discipleship class together. As the two-year program came to an end they were challenged to come up with a servant leadership project to help them touch the lives of others in Jesus’ name.

The idea they decided on not only has touched lives for eight years, but eternity as well.

Last December FBC members — in partnership with a Dallas/Fort Worth-based ministry called Grace Bridge — hosted what has become an annual event known as Bikes and Bibles. The name almost says it all — bicycles and Bibles are distributed to area families in need, including 118 bikes in 2022.

And 15 people made first-time decisions to accept Christ.

“One of the things we …
