About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sprinkles, Light Rain, Rain. Forced Route Change

Texbiker.net Posted on December 13, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 13, 2022

After 1 day of Zwifting I was back on the road today. I decided to change a few of streets on my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. I skipped the usual streets at the beginning, added a loop in Kingwood Greens, and compensated for Atascocita Shores Drive at FM 1960 closure for construction. I rode out of the driveway at 10:52 AM and finished at 1:37 PM. During that time I encountered light rain, heavier rain, and sprinkles. The roads were wet in places splattering mud on my Cervelo and shoes. When I finished the hose and soap came out to wash both of them. I rode 35.4 miles putting me within 12 miles of my December 200 road mile goal.

Maybe the construction at Atascocita Shores

On Old Atascocita Road I saw another cyclist and saw him again on Pinehurst Trail Drive on the way back to Kingwood. I didn’t expect to see any cyclists.

Wind was strong out of the south challenging my legs on the way to FM 2100. They were up to the challenge. When I finished I looked at the weather and saw the wind was 14 mph with 30 mph gusts. No wonder I noticed the headwind, the tailwind didn’t feel as strong. The weather will change later tonight and may keep me inside riding on my smart trainer for a few days. Weather while I biked: start 75 (humidity 85%, dew point 71), overcast, wind SE 14 mph; finish 77 (humidity 81%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph gusts 30 mph.

By Warren Vause | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A local chapter of the Ismaili Civic group took part in the holiday season by donating 30 bikes to the Angel Tree program.

The Ismaili Jamatkhana Community Center was bustling with volunteers as they got together to help send off the bikes to the Salvation Army of Bryan/College Station.

But it’s not just the holiday season that puts the organization in a giving mood, they’re dedicated to giving throughout the whole year.

“Ismaili Civic is a global program under which the Shia Ismaili Muslim community across the world has united under its centuries old tradition of rendering volunteer service and …

Dallas-Fort Worth Bicycle-Pedestrian Projects Awarded $55 million

By IrvingWeekly Staff | www.irvingweekly.com

The Regional Transportation Council (RTC) approved $55 million in federal funding for construction of 13 active transportation projects in Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties on Thursday. A combined $8 million in local match provided by the entities brings the total investment in the region’s bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to $63 million as part of the 2022 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program Call for Projects.

These funded improvements will connect people who choose active modes of transportation, such as walking and bicycling, to schools and major hubs of employment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In addition to connecting people to destinations, projects awarded funding by the RTC will improve safety and comfort, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality. The projects were …

White Oak Bayou Greenway Update

Frustrated by the upheaval along White Oak Bayou? You’re not alone. But there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

According to the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD), a contract has been awarded to a firm to complete the work happening between FM 1960 and Hollister Road. Work on that segment is expected to begin next month, and the contract provides up to 420 days to complete the work. HCFCD will be seeking bids to complete the section between Hollister and Cole Creek in January, with work expected to begin in the spring.

The project was held up because the original contractor, which was working on both segments, had declared bankruptcy earlier this year. Getting the work going again required a legal process involving the contractor’s insurer.

Per HCFCD, "trails within the project limits will remain closed for the duration of construction for safety of the public and construction personnel."

Zwift Makuri Islands Turf N Surf

Texbiker.net Posted on December 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 12, 2022
I’m chasing the Tron bike

I decided to ride Zwift today rather than outside. I didn’t create a meetup but looked at the routes in the Makuri Islands and found the Turf N Surf one that I have rode before. Some of the roads are in other Makuri Islands routes but there were a few new ones. I rode my Blue Norcross AL bike mounted on the Wahoo Kickr Core trainer. The weather outside: 64 degrees, cloudy, wind E 10 mph. I didn’t look up the route information on ZwiftInsider.com before the ride but the brief description in Zwift said 15.3 miles with 645 feet of climbing. I rode 15.39 miles and climbed 650 feet but I rode some after finishing the route. ZwiftInsider.com describes the route, “This route is conceptually simple: a counterclockwise loop from Neokyo to Urukazi and back. And it starts of easily enough, too: the first 14.5km are essentially flat or downhill as you wind through Neokyo then descend the slot canyon and ride along the beach of Urukazi.”

As I rode to the 7.7 mile halfway point I was nowhere near halfway on the climbing which meant the last 7 miles was going to be hilly as you can see on the route profile above. Since I didn’t ride in a meetup the gold leaders beacon was not present. There were numerous Zwifters on the route and when I opened the companion app it showed over 17,000 online.

Strava reported my PR on Festival Harbor Climb CCW (6:41). Only 4 Strava segments on this route, maybe because it is new.
