About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Batteries Don’t Like Extended Vacation

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2022

The extended time not riding my Lynskey Helix bike created two problems on today’s bike ride. The last time I rode the Lynskey was November 10th. Around the 1 mile point today I noticed the rear derailleur didn’t shift when I pushed the lever. I looked at the gear page on my Wahoo Bolt computer and saw a big N/A where the gear should be. I switched the front derailleur battery to the rear and the gears showed up on the computer page. I rarely shift the front chainring so no problem but I wondered if the battery would last the whole ride. It did. Next when I stopped at the cemetery to visit my wife’s grave I saw the rear light no longer was flashing. I didn’t have a fix for this one. When I got home the chargers were busy. I think I’ll charge the rear derailleur battery on the Cervelo bike before tomorrow’s ride.

I rolled out on the ride at 10:57 AM, much earlier than yesterday’s ride. I chose a northerly route, Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood, which would be a longer distance. The weather was mostly a repeat of yesterday but the wind wasn’t as strong on the return to Kingwood. By the 1:48 PM finish I rode 34.02 miles getting me to 30% of my 200 mile goal for December.

My neck muscles still need to get stronger. Several times my head drooped some from the weight of my helmet. Good thing I don’t mount my GoPro camera on my helmet. I remember this is a problem for the RAAM riders.

Weather for the ride: start 76 (humidity 86%, dew point 72), overcast, wind S 4 mph; finish 81 (humidity 67%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. I probably over dressed with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. But I was not too hot except for the few times the sun broke through the clouds. Thursday’s weather likely will repeat today.

1 big thing: The Third Ward bike wars

www.axios.com

Construction on new bike lanes along Blodgett Street in Third Ward is already underway, but a Houston City Council member is holding up funds for nearby drainage improvements in an effort to slow down the bikeways project.

Catch up quick: Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis’ office is funding $11.7 million of the $12.1 million needed for improvements to Blodgett, Tierwester, Rosewood and Sampson streets deep in the heart of Third Ward. …

UPDATED – Bicyclist injured when struck by a vehicle

by Steve W Stewart | www.kjas.com

A bicyclist was injured when he was struck by a vehicle Monday night. Jasper County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan says it happened at about 8:30 on Farm to Market Road 3414 near the Westlake Community.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark later said that the bicyclist, 33-year-old Randle McShan, of Burkeville, was hit by a 2015 Jeep Patriot, driven by Hunter Montes, 18, of Jasper.

Clark said both the bicycle and the Jeep were traveling southbound and the driver of the Jeep slowed down to pass the bicycle, however, she said the bicyclist went into the path of the Jeep as it was passing.

McShan was rushed from the scene by ambulance to a Lufkin hospital. There’s no word on his condition.

Leander shop Drifted Cycles brings bike community together

By Zacharia Washington | communityimpact.com

Brent Skidmore, owner of Drifted Cycles, opened Leander’s first and only bicycle shop in late March.

Previously, Skidmore worked in the oil industry, and his wife, Stephanie, worked as a dental office manager. After getting laid off in 2020 due to the pandemic, the Skidmore family moved to Hawaii.

A few months into their time there, Skidmore and Stephanie realized they needed to focus on working again. Skidmore and his family always enjoyed riding bikes, and he thought if he were to ever open a business, it would be centered around bicycles.

Skidmore then acquired space for …

Which Muscles Go Soft First?

Texbiker.net Posted on December 6, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 6, 2022

When you are off the bike for an extended time which muscles go soft the most? I learned that my neck muscles went soft for me. The last time i wore a helmet riding out side was November 11th. Then I rode indoors on Zwift for several days before leaving on a trip to Ohio and New York City. Of course, I don’t wear a helmet when I ride my Wahoo Kickr Core smart trainer which meant it has been 24 days since I rode with a helmet. Not long after I started today’s bike ride at 12:34 PM my neck muscles had trouble holding my head up. My helmet doesn’t weigh very much but it was enough to sag my head a few times as I rode. I thought my legs would complain but if they did my neck shouted louder.

When I ran some errands earlier this morning I ran into some rain which caused me to think I would ride Zwift but the rain didn’t last long and the streets dried mostly. I changed my mind and rode my Cervelo Caledonia on the Atascocita – Walden route. I chose a shorter route with the late start and not wanting to challenge my legs too much after the long layoff. I finished the ride at 2:37 PM riding 25.38 miles. With December weather my road goal is a modest 200 miles. Based on the weather forecast today I might get all of those this week before a cold front moves in next week sometime.

Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 77 (humidity 81%, dew point 71), overcast, wind SW 8 mph; finish 80 (humidity 74%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph gusts 16 mph. The wind felt stronger as the ride progressed but I didn’t pedal harder since I headed north to finish. The weather should repeat tomorrow (Wednesday) and I plan on riding again. I need to build up those neck muscles.

I thought during my absence the FM 1960 road construction would show more progress than I saw today.
