About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

New GoPro Mount, Sunshine, Huffman – Liberty County Line Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 14, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 14, 2022

A cool front passed through during the night lowering the temperature into the 50’s. While I waited for it to warm up I watched the Tour of Turkey and Giro di Sicilia. By then I finished eating breakfast and it warmed up to the mid 70’s. I got dressed and readied the Cervelo Caledonia bike for the ride on the “Huffman – Liberty County Line” route. The ride began at 11:35 AM.

After yesterday’s short for a weekday bike ride I needed some extra miles to stay on a pace for a 200+ mile week. Today’s route fit the bill. This was the 3rd time riding this route in 2022 and on 3 different bikes. I biked 40.17 miles upping the week’s total to 135.17 miles. I have 3 potential biking days to ride 65 miles. I’m at 481.16 miles for the month, 74% of my 650 mile goal.

I thought the wind would be lighter for today’s bike ride when I started. It was from the east, where I was heading, at 13 mph. But it increase to 14 mph with 20 mph gusts when I finished at 2:57 PM. I could feel the gusts as I rode east on FM 1960 from Huffman to the county line. Once got there and made the turn around the wind became my friend as a tailwind for most the way back to Kingwood. Overall weather conditions: start 75 (humidity 36%, dew point 46), partly cloudy, wind E 13 mph; finish 80 (humidity 22%, dew point 38), partly cloudy, wind E 14 mph gusts 20 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey over it. I was comfortable, enjoying the sun after two days of clouds.

Riding the Cervelo I got data about gearing and shifting at the AXS.SRAM.com activity report. I spent 1:24:11 riding time in the 35×13 gearing and 1:14:58 in the 35×15. 45 RD shifts during the 3:01:25 overall biking time. Riding into the wind on FM 1960 I used the 35×13 but when I had a side or tailwind my legs pedaled the 35×13.

During the ride through Walden I saw a church member outside so I pulled over we chatted for about 10 minutes. He just got home from playing golf.

I used a new GoPro mount during the ride as you can see in the video. The GoPro has a Garmin connector/adapter which put in a Garmin computer mount behind the handle bar. Tomorrow I will try putting the mount in front of the handle bar to see if the bike computer doesn’t get in the way.

I regained the Strava Local Legend on Huffman Eastgate Rd with my 3 rides in 2022. I wonder how long I can keep it. I have a number of other local legends too.

2500 miles on a bike: Artie Carpenter ’25 cycles across America

Vincent Jiang | williamsrecord.com

There are 2445 miles stretching between the loblolly pine trees around Jacksonville, Fla., and the waves crashing upon Imperial Beach south of San Diego, Calif. Between lies the rolling white dunes of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, elegant saguaro cacti of the Southwest, and the towering In-Ko-Pah Mountains in Southern California. To make it from Jacksonville to San Diego in two weeks, one would have to travel an average of 175 miles a day, so while it is a long trip, it would be relatively easy in a car. But when Artie Carpenter ’25 made the trip over spring break, it wasn’t in a car; it was on the back of what he described as his “trusted steed”: his bicycle. …

… That mindset has taken Carpenter to some interesting places, like a lively restaurant in Lufkin, Texas. With his biking gear and attire, he naturally drew the attention of the patrons, who asked him what he was doing. From there, he was sucked into conversation, and they even bought him a second dinner. “It puts people in a good mood to hear about something that they don’t encounter in everyday life,” he said. …

100-mile nature trail connecting Austin to San Antonio springs into next phase

By Melissa Gaskill | austin.culturemap.com

The Great Springs Project has released its Trails Plan, another step along the path to a proposed 100-plus-mile network of trails from the Alamo to the Capitol.

The project, launched in 2018, aims to create a corridor of protected lands over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone that connects its four significant springs: Barton, San Marcos, Comal, and San Antonio. The organization hired Alta Planning + Design to create the master plan, which envisions completion of the trail network by the Texas Bicentennial in 2036. Sections of the trail will be built in phases, based on factors such as funding, landowner negotiation, and design.

The newly released plan includes 16 implementation steps, starting with approval of the …

Kingwood Streets Bike Ride With My Pal The Wind Gusts

Texbiker.net Posted on April 13, 2022 by Rick AnkrumApril 13, 2022

Limited time for a bike ride today so I was out the door and Lynskey R300 wheels rolling at 8:53 AM finishing at 10:38 AM. I did manage to watch the finish of the Tour of Turkey and Giro di Sicilia while eating breakfast. I biked 20.48 miles, a little more than I predicted in the video. This was the 6th ride on the Kingwood Streets route this year though the routes are not identical.

4-13-2022 YTD Bike Rides Kingwood Streets

I plan on a longer ride tomorrow to make for today’s shorter ride and get closer to a 200+ mile week.

Wind continues to blow around at strong levels. Weather conditions today: start 75 (humidity 90%, dew point 72), overcast, wind S 17 mph gusts 30 mph; finish 76 (humidity 90%, dew point 73), overcast, wind S 17 mph gusts 28 mph. A “cool” front may arrive late tonight and maybe the winds will let up some. A few times I felt a fine mist but nothing more. With the 90% humidity I probably was squeezing the moisture out of the air.

A Strava PR on Look! A Tree! (3:01). I don’t look up segments before a ride so when these happen they are unexpected.

Texas Parks & Wildlife Will Conduct Feasibility Study Of State Park Status For Northeast Texas Trail

John Mark Dempsey | www.ketr.org

Hank Pickering, a board member of the Northeast Texas Trail, says the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will conduct a feasibility study of adopting the NETT as a state park.

The NETT, about 130 miles long from about Farmersville to New Boston on former railroad right of way, would be the only such trail in Texas to be accepted as a state park. The 237-mile Katy Trail in Missouri has state park status. National Trail Days is Saturday, April 23 and Hank says a 5-K run and other events are planned for that day in Wolfe City. And the "Gran Fondo" bike ride on the NETT from Roxton to Clarksville is coming up Saturday, April 30. Hank says Sugar Hill Adventures in Farmersville is now offering shuttle rides on the NETT.
