Two bike races to watch the finish of today on GCN+: Tour of Turkey and Giro di Sicilia. I watched the last 10 k of each one via the replay. They started early and finished around the time I made it to the kitchen after getting up. I thought about which route to ride today and settled on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” one. I gathered my ride kit, got dressed and wheeled the Cervelo Caledonia to the driveway. Rolling away at 11:22 AM the bike ride began. I finished at 1:48 PM. During that time I rode 33.29 miles boosting the week to 74.5 miles. This was the 8th time on this route in 2022. Probably the one I used the most so far. I need 230 more miles to reach my 650 mile goal for April.

Today’s bike ride fit the average of the other 7 rides in distance, time, and heart rate. It was the second fastest average speed at 13.8 mph trailing the January 30th ride of 13.9 mph.

Checking the AXS.SRAM.com activity report, I spent 1:26:07 of the ride in the 35×13 gears out of the total ride time of 2:24:57. I was pushing the gears despite the headwind. I managed to ride .08 in the 35×12 gear until I realized it was too hard. I made 35 RD shift changes.

Returning to Kingwood on W. Lake Houston Parkway I passed a woman cyclist riding in the same direction twice. I looped on a side street and she didn’t.

I didn’t mention the wind first today. When I checked the weather before leaving the wind was from the SE at 16 mph with 25 mph gusts. At the end I checked again and it dropped to 13 mph from the SE. I’m thinking the strongest wind came while I rode into it and slowed when it became a tailwind. It would’ve been better the other way around. Overall weather conditions: start 76 (humidity 83%, dew point 71), overcast, wind SE 16 mph gusts 25 mph; finish 78 (humidity 82%, dew point 72), overcast, wind SE 13 mph. I wore the same combination as yesterday: shorts, LS t-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey over it. I felt comfortable even though the temperature stayed in the upper 70’s.

He was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on November 17, 1957, to Nancy and John Price. LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Mark Scotch, 66, hit “The Organ Trail” for a fourth time, this time with a 1,361-mile bike ride. He rides his bicycle to promote kidney disease awareness, living donor awareness, and post-donation functionality.

Scotch’s fourth Organ Trail began Monday, March 21 in San Diego. From there, he traveled into Los Angeles, rode east to Phoenix, Arizona onto Albuquerque, New Mexico, and arrived in Lubbock, on April 11th – three weeks after he began his marathon ride.

“The Organ Trail is all about generating awareness for the need for kidney donors, especially living kidney donors, but it’s also about showing people that even with one kidney, you can still lead a life full of activities, even if those activities are sustained and vigorous,” said Scotch.

Monday April 11, 2022, 31 miles (50 km) – Total so far: 1,454 miles (2,340 km) I’m told that in celebration of the group successfully passing the half-way point on the Southern Tier, we are rewarded today in several ways. Monday April 11, 2022, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,899 miles (3,057 km) Today started out when I was awakened around 5 AM by the sound of torrential rain, hail and thunder. I checked the weather and it looked like a localized storm that was heading out. By the time we loaded our luggage and got ready to leave at 7:30 it had passed and the pavement was almost dry. Our whole group left together and in about 1 mile we crossed the Colorado River on a foot bridge and in about two miles we entered Bastrop State park. Wind And Wildflowers Bike Ride; Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road

When I got up this morning just before 7 AM I thought today would be a Zwift ride day because it was raining. The rain stopped after 0.09″ and the streets began to dry off thanks to some strong wind and sun peeking through the clouds. I waited until 11:15 AM to start the bike ride to give the streets time to dry some. While I waited I thought about which route to ride and settled on the “Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road” one. After finishing the ride at 2:33 PM I checked SportTracks and learned this was the second ride on the route in 2022 versus 6 times in 2021. I wanted to start the week with a longer ride because on Wednesday I have an appointment which will limit my bike ride. Today I biked 41.2 miles slightly farther than the other ride this year.

I was shocked when I checked the weather as I got ready to leave on the bike ride. The wind was from the south at 29 mph with 39 mph gusts. Almost as strong as yesterday. The route gave me time to prepare as I rode north and then northwest. The hard part came on the return from McQueen Road to the southeast. Pedaling to McQueen Road went easily with a few gusts thrown in to remind of the return trip. Standing at McQueen Road waiting for traffic I felt the wind and wondered how my legs would handle it. They were tired but managed to keep my speed in the 12 to 13 mph range to Old Sorters Road. I was tempted to stop at the Circle K store at Sorters Road but overcame it and kept pedaling.

Turning onto Old Sorters Road the trees and buildings offered a little shelter from the wind. Once in Oakhurst my direction changed where the wind wasn’t coming at me all the time. On the frontage road at Kellington I hit the headwind again as I rode to the Kingwood Drive u-turn. Under US59 I headed north again as I neared Kings Manor where trees and houses offered a little wind relief.

As spring progresses the wildflowers are blooming more. I showed some of them in the video.

Weather conditions: start 78 (humidity 69%, dew point 67), partly cloudy, wind S 29 mph gusts 39 mph; finish 78 (humidity 74%, dew point 69), overcast, wind S 16 mph gusts 24 mph. I didn’t know that the wind let up some during the bike ride but I’m thankful. I dressed comfortably wearing shorts, LS T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey over it.

With the help of the wind I set a PR on Stripes-to_OldHoustonRd (21:54) headed NW according to Strava. Looking at the leaderboard my time is well short of the leaders by about 5 minutes. I wonder when these people ride this segment because I rarely see another cyclist there. The shoulder in this segment has debris with dirt, rocks and spilled concrete from the several concrete plants along FM 1314. The other shoulder is not any better.

San Antonio cyclist’s death prompts closer look at ‘tricky intersection’ along Salado Creek Greenway

Craig Gulledge, a brawny, bearded cyclist and spirited competitor in the San Antonio Highland Games, was pedaling home on the Salado Creek Greenway less than an hour before the popular hike-and-bike trail officially closed at dusk.

But he never made it. Gulledge, 53, died while trying to cross an unusual and hazardous intersection where the trail meets a one-lane commercial access road by the entrance of the Los Patios retail and dining complex. His death is one of three local bicycle fatalities reported in March.

In a statement, Gulledge’s widow and three children said they hope city and state officials will improve safety at the location. …

Day 31 – Camp Wood/Big Oak to Vanderpool/Los Maples

Saturday April 9, 2022, 46 miles (74 km) – Total so far: 1,375 miles (2,213 km) Well, they must call it the “Hill Country” for a reason. I learned today what at least part of that reason is. After yesterday’s 74 mile ride I was looking forward with relief to todays much shorter mileage. Shorter miles? Yes. Tougher climbs? You betcha! Our ACA leader told us during our map meeting the night before the route we followed today was known to locals as the “Dragon’s Back” because of the sharp lines of its elevation profile. When I post the map and that profile for todays ride you’ll get the picture. A doable ride but we earned every inch of progress east today!

Day 32 – Vanderpool/Los Maples to Kerrville

Sunday April 10, 2022, 48 miles (77 km) – Total so far: 1,423 miles (2,290 km) Today we rode 47 miles from Lost Maples to Kerrville. The ride started with the Lost Maples “Wall of Death”, described in writing somewhere at .5 miles of 14%, right out of camp. Whew! Truth be told, there was discussion tonight about various GPS gear in use that read that hill at just 10-11%… how about we all agree it was really steep for a half mile or so? Anyway, if you have to climb one of those on a loaded touring bike, right out of bed is my choice for how. That was followed by more classic Hill Country along the Guadalupe River and some very picturesque ranch lands. Very beautiful part of the country.

Day 31: Fredericksburg, TX to Austin, TX

Saturday April 9, 2022 I found out yesterday that on the day we rode to Fredricksburg some of the riders met a self supported rider who said he is following my journal. If you read this I think I followed you for a while when I came into Fredricksburg. You were too fast for me to catch and you turned left before I could catch you. Sunday April 10, 2022 Today we went from a suburb on the west side of Austin to a suburb on the east side crossing through Austin. Again the theme was wind but there were a few more interesting things. It was a mixture of roads with shoulders, roads without shoulders, bike lanes, bike paths, busy roads and just a few quiet roads. It started out warm and got warmer but there was that wind to make it feel a little cooler. And did I mention there was wind? L’Étape San Antonio draws thousands of cyclists for some Fiesta fitness fun

More than 3,000 cyclists gathered at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Main Campus on Sunday for L’Étape, a first of its kind bike race in this city.

Starting at 7 a.m., registered bicyclists pedaled along one of three routes — a 100-mile course, a 60-miler and a 25-mile race. Routes were hilly, and strong winds made it even more difficult for cyclists to endure.

“L’Étape” is French for “the stage,” referring to a leg of the famous Tour de France, whose experts designed routes for the cycling series that aims to create a Tour de France experience for amateurs around the globe.

“I think the L’Étape by Tour de France will do for cycling what the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon has done …

Video: Driver flees after cyclist killed in northeast Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A cyclist was killed on Sunday morning in northeast Harris County, investigators say.

Raymond Daniel Wike, a pedal cyclist, was traveling in the right southbound lane in the 9900 block of Sheldon Road.

An unknown car failed to control their speed when striking Wike from behind on his bicycle, deputies say.

The unknown driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Wike was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injures sustained from the crash.
