About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ride to Remember honors Charles and Lia McBride and raises safety awareness

Naomi Skinner | www.timesrecordnews.com

Cyclists gathered in Hamilton Park to honor the late Charles Winget McBride and Lisa Kathleen McBride with a Ride to Remember on a recent evening.

About a year ago, the McBrides, a beloved couple in the local cycling community, were riding their bicycles when, according to court documents, they were struck from behind by a pickup in Clay County and died as a result of their injuries.

"Like most of the people here, I rode with …

Bikers stampede on the Chisholm Trail

BY LARRY CAUSEY | www.tdtnews.com

BELTON — On a relatively cool Saturday morning, 103 cyclists pedaled their way through rural Bell County in the 13th annual Stampede on the Chisholm Trail, sponsored by the Belton Lions Club.

All routes started and finished at the Hike and Bike Trail on Nolan Creek. Heading west at the outset, the riders turned south and made a rough circle, said Karen Stagner, club secretary. The route was set up for rides of 12, 30, 55 and 62 miles.

“The majority of them are dong the 62,” she said. “It’s not a race. It’s just a ride in the beautiful Central Texas countryside.”

The bike ride allows the Lions Club to provide scholarships for Belton-area children who qualify for …

Dr. James P. Stanley October 25, 1929 – June 6, 2024

www.legacy.com

On June 6, 2024, Dr. James P. Stanley of Atlanta, Texas heard his Lord and Savior say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” James Stanley was born on October 25, 1929 in Cass, Texas to Louis and Otelia Stanley. Originally, James attended Texas State Teacher’s College acquiring his degree and teacher certification. After a brief stint of teaching, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He took great pride in his service to his country achieving the rank of Lieutenant. After leaving the Air Force and working at Lone Star Steel, he continued his education at the Baylor College of Dentistry. After graduation, he moved his family back to Atlanta where he practiced dentistry. Later he completed the orthodontics program at Baylor College of Dentistry and practiced in Atlanta for 32 years where he appreciated hard work, his patients, and the profession. Above his professional successes, James valued the love of his life, Donna Beck Stanley, and expressed that sentiment to the end. …

… Dr. Stanley loved challenging bicycle races well into his eighties, even riding his bike from Atlanta to Hot Springs, AR “just for fun.” He enjoyed a good cup of Yuban coffee, intense ping pong matches, restoring his 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible, and tinkering on engines of all kinds. …

Bicyclist arrested after driver claims he threatened her, damaged her vehicle

By Juan Betancourt | dentonrc.com

Denton police arrested a 32-year-old Saturday who they say struck a woman’s vehicle with his bicycle, threatened her and had methamphetamine in his possession.

At about 2:52 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a disturbance in the 3900 block of Morse Street.

The woman told police a man had ripped off her side mirror, spit on her window and had a knife in his backpack.

She drove to the location to visit a friend at work. She then saw the man on a bicycle and said he made a wide turn into the parking lot and struck the driver’s side of the vehicle. …

A Serene Encounter: Biking Beside Wildlife on Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2024

Later start at 3:08 PM for the bike ride so I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on Kingwood streets. I rode through The Enclave section for the first time. This section is beside King Crossings Drive where I ride often. The weather was 91 degrees at the start with the wind from the SE at 18 mph. The helped keep me cooler than I expected and the tree shade was welcomed too. In the video I rode close to a large doe beside Kingwood Drive. The doe didn’t run off as I passed about 10 feet from her. I finished at 4:58 PM.

Missing Wednesday due to rain didn’t stop me from riding over 200 miles for the week with 229.31 miles. The first three days were 40+ mile rides. This the 5th week in a row of 200+ miles. I’m slightly ahead of the pace needed to reach June’s goal of 908 miles with 293.5 32%).

Houston’s Columbia Tap Trail still unlit and bleak as improvement plans sit on shelf

By Joy Sewing | www.houstonchronicle.com

The historic 4-mile Columbia Tap Bike Trail that connects Third Ward to Brays Bayou and downtown looks no different now than a year ago when I wrote about the bleak hike-and-bike path.

There are no security lights, historical markers, protected crosswalks or other amenities. The only improvements are new solar-powered lights and sidewalks on a portion of the trail near the Cuney Homes housing complex funded by the Houston Housing Authority.

If it weren’t for big plans by city officials and community organizations to improve the …

No Train Blockage This Ride: Waving Hello To Cyclists

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2024

Mostly repeating last Saturday’s bike ride I rolled away at 8:33 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. The Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route goes through several Kingwood Villages, south on W. Lake Houston Parkway, moving to Kings River Drive and Atascocita Shores Drive to connect with FM 1960 at the west shore of Lake Houston. I like this route on Saturday’s because other cyclists usually are there too and today was no exception. The key to seeing them is not leaving after 8:30 or before. I was a few minutes late from watching the Tour of Britain Women race. No train blocking the crossing on Old Atascocita road like last Saturday. The wind was light at the start but increased to 13 mph with 21 mph gusts by the time I finished at 11:15 AM. I felt the difference in the wind but my direction was not into it after making the turn at FM2100. I rearranged the order of some of the streets in the beginning and the end to get to FM1960 quicker and add distance at the end.

Weather: Start 80 degrees, humidity 85%, dew point 75.1, fair, wind N 4 mph; Finish 90 degrees, humidity 64%, dew point 75.8, a few clouds, wind S 13 mph gusts 21 mph.
