About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas NICA and 24hrs in the Canyon

24hrs in the Canyon is one of the biggest bike races in Texas and raises funds for the Harrington Cancer and Health Foundation.

Many of the league’s students, coaches and families take their end-of-season fitness and put it to work in the Canyon. We collected a few of our favorites here! Jeramy Carney – Amarillo Yellowjackets Coach

Jeramy Carney is one of the league’s long-time coaches. He’s often given Kudos for taking the time to session and review riding skills with even his highest level athletes.

Been waiting almost 10 years for this day! In 2014 my sons began to express interest in riding mountain bikes and join me in my love of cycling. At the time, I had a big audacious thought that evolved into a dream and then became a goal of mine and my sons. After racing in 24 Hours in the Canyon I had the thought – how cool would it be to be able to race a 24 hour 4-man team with my 3 sons? Through the years as their love of cycling and racing grew, the thought turned into a dream – how cool would it be to be able to not only race a 24 …

Inspired by Eucharist, Texas pilgrim pedals her way alongside Juan Diego pilgrimage group

James Ramos | www.detroitcatholic.com

Patricia Galindo of Brownsville, Texas, sits atop her tricycle outside Sacred Heart Church in Galveston on June 2, 2024, after following a Eucharistic procession. She followed portions of the St. Juan Diego Route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage by trike as it journeyed through Texas from Brownsville to Beaumont at the Texas-Louisiana border.

GALVESTON, Texas (OSV News) ? Patricia Galindo’s handwritten sign towered over her, often fluttering about when a breeze from the Gulf of Mexico blew through Galveston Island.

In large black ink, Galindo wrote a bilingual message in English and Spanish on white cardboard declaring, “Eucharist: My Source of Strength.”

And by finally reaching Galveston Island June 2, the feast of Corpus Christi, Galindo finally reached the home stretch of her biking journey, one that took her …

Ride, Reflect, React: A Cyclist’s Close Encounter on the Frontage Road

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2024

I rode the New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route today but made some changes to the streets. In Kingwood I rode to Speedy Stop to check if the gas pumps were operating, they weren’t yesterday evening when I came back from Galveston. That changed where I rode through Elm Grove Village. Later riding through Valley Ranch I turned left onto Valley Ranch Drive to ride through the shopping center, under TX99 to Valley Ranch Bend Drive. After that I took some side streets entered Forest Colony, then the Azalea District to Valley Ranch Parkway. This put me back on the usual streets for this route until Bentwood Oaks Drive in Oakhurst. Bentwood Oaks connected to the southbound US59 frontage road and then I stopped at the Circle K for PowerAde and a snack before continuing the ride. The route usually averages 35 miles but today with the changes I rode 36.41 miles on the Cervelo Caledonia. Today was ride 7 on this route in 2024. I started at 10:57 AM and finished at 2:20 PM.

6-7-2024 Cervelo Caledonia Valley Ranch Bend-2
6-7-2024 Cervelo Caledonia Valley Ranch Bend-2

Major collision averted on the US59 northbound frontage road. Pedaling in deep thought I wasn’t looking ahead very far, looked up to see a stalled large Ram pickup truck hazard lights flashing about 20 feet in front of me. I grabbed the brakes, sliding the tires I managed to unclip, get my right foot down and not crash into the back of the truck or fall in the grass to the right. I need to look ahead more often!

Weather: Start 88 degrees, humidity 63%, dew point 73.9, fair, wind NNW 2 mph; Finish 92 degrees, humidity 51%, dew point 71, a few clouds, wind SE 6 mph.

Galveston Island: Isla del Sol To Stewart Beach And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2024

I drove to Galveston Island for today’s bike ride. The starting point was the beach access west of the Isla del Sol water tower. As I drove to the beach access I was concerned about some electric transmission wire work on the west bound side of FM3005. The route coming back from the Seawall would be through the work zones with one traffic lane closed at 13 Mile Road. It turned out to not be a problem and actually gave me a full lane to ride in rather than just the shoulder for about a mile. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike for 46.75 miles. Wind was 9 mph from the north which lower than earlier in the week. To avoid the narrow shoulder or no shoulder on FM3005 riding east approaching the start of the seawall I rode on Stewart Road which learned about on my previous ride last year on September 28th. Stewart Road has less traffic than FM3005, two lanes, decent road surface, and a bike lane from 7 1/2 Mile Road to 81st Street. I started at 10:52 AM and finished at 3:20 PM. Riding the seawall is a slow pace due to people walking and other obstacles. I turned around at Stewart Beach. On the way back I stopped at a Circle K for ice and PowerAde enjoying the shade while I drank it.

Some of the Strava top results: PR on 13th to Pleasure Pier (4:29), PR on Mind the Gap (1:35), PR on 8 Mile Rd to Camino Real (8:28), 2nd fastest time on San-Luis Single Lane (7:03).
