About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A bike shop once owned by cyclist Tito Bradshaw suffers from a judicial deal

daviddalpe | texasnewstoday.com

San Antonio – On Thursday, repairs and other work continued at the South Flores bike store once owned by Tito Bloodshaw, a beloved figure in the San Antonio cycling community.

The day before, Linda Collier Mason, a 70-year-old driver convicted of manslaughter in Bradshaw’s death, was sentenced to 20 days in prison, 100 days under house arrest, and 10 years on probation. ..

Mason, who had no record in the past, beat and killed Bloodshaw while riding a bike in East Houston in 2019.

Joe Richard Naranjo, owner of the Ride in Paradise Bike Shop, said the judicial deal “doesn’t even hurt the surface,” although she owes to the community and Bradshaw’s family.

Naranho said he hopes …

Steve & Barry’s Ride Across America – Stage 5 (Section 3 and 1/2 of 4)

By Steve Elsesser | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 17 – Ride (10) – 2 miles west of Tornillo, TX to El Paso, TX

Saturday October 23, 2021, 32 miles (52 km) – Total so far: 476 miles (766 km) At 32.4 miles, today was the shortest ride of Stage 5 (not counting the road race make-up). That’s because we called 2 audibles – one at each end of today’s ride. Yesterday was so nice, and wind-friendly we decided to ride an extra 10 miles. And, in order to ride downtown El Paso on Sunday morning, we shortened the route today by 6 miles. The result is that today was short. Very short.

Trivia question: What are the top 2 crops grown in the Rio Grande valley south of El Paso? (Hint: You’ve already seen both.)

Because today was short, we decided not to leave the campground until 8:00. That allowed us to be "shoes up" at 8:45. …

Day 18 – Ride (11) – El Paso, TX to Las Cruces, NM: Whew! We’ve finally crossed Texas!

Sunday October 24, 2021, 53 miles (86 km) – Total so far: 530 miles (852 km) Good ride today! Our plan to ride through El Paso on Sunday morning when traffic might be light. Indeed it was.

We got off to a nice sunrise start at 7:45. Sunny skies, of course, and temps cool enough to merit a jacket for the first hour. As we got away from downtown we had a 7 mile stretch of freshly paved road, with retail stores, restaurants, fast food, and strip shopping centers. Sunday morning traffic was light. Quite delightful ride out of El Paso, actually.

Trivia Question of the day: We’ve finally made all the way through Texas. How far did we ride to do that? …

Kingwood Streets + San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2021

I got distract when I started today’s bike ride and left my CamelBak at home. I realized it about a mile into the ride and circled back to get it. The afternoon sun warmed the temperature into the mid 80’s. I started at 1:29 PM riding my Lynskey R300 bike. I rode Kingwood streets, through forest Cove to the San Jacinto Bayou Geenway for a total of 22.63 miles, longer than I guessed at the beginning. My week of rides concluded with 237.78 miles, the highest week in October so far.

Several other bike riders were out on the greenbelt trails. I am always concerned for the riders who don’t wear a helmet.

Weather overview: start 84 (humidity 73%, dew point 74), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; finish 85 (humidity 67% humidity, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

Top results according to Strava: 2nd fastest time on Greenway Appendix (55s) and 2nd fastest time on Soccer/Lacrosse Road to Crystal Springs (3:37).

College Station City Council to continue discussions to expand micromobility

Chelsea Katz | theeagle.com

The College Station City Council discussed and came to a consensus during its Oct. 14 meeting to move forward with expanding its micromobility ordinance to include electric micro-vehicles.

Vanessa Garza, senior manager of the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, noted the ordinance currently only allows bicycles. This means the VeoRide Cosmo electric sit-down scooters on the Texas A&M campus and in specified other areas of the city are not included in the ordinance.

Micro-vehicles are defined as those powered by the rider or …

Steve & Barry’s Ride Across America – Stage 5 (Section 3 and 1/2 of 4)

By Steve Elsesser | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 14 – Ride (8) – Van Horn, TX to picnic area 8 miles east of Sierra Blanca, TX: Today we hit the 2/3 mark on our Ride Across America!

Wednesday October 20, 2021, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 396 miles (637 km) Occasionally, we have the bonus of ending or beginning the day at our campground. It not only allows us to get an earlier start, it also saves the to/from drive. This morning was such a morning. It was cool (I was actually cold) as we started shortly after sunrise under – you guessed it – sunny skies.

Day 16 Ride (9) – 8 miles east of Sierra Blanca, TX to 2 miles west of Tornillo, TX

Friday October 22, 2021, 48 miles (77 km) – Total so far: 444 miles (714 km) Another fast ride today, with the wind at our backs and 2 bonus flat tires!

We left the campground just before sunrise. The moon was full and bright, and worthy of a picture. Pretty cool.

Where Were Other Cyclists?

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2021

As I write this blog post I hear thunder outside. Glad I finished today’s bike ride before that started. My ride began at 8:39 AM and I was back home by 11:20 AM. My trusty Canyon Endurace bike carried me over the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route for 32.45 miles. My Canyon now has 25,015 miles of biking. I made it a 200 mile week with 215.15 miles. This makes the 3rd week in a row of 200+ miles. October is at 712.48 miles. A lot of miles going here. I felt good pedaling the Canyon on the ride.

10-23-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary ending 10-24-2021
10-23-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary ending 10-24-2021

Sunrise at 7:28 AM slowed down my start but by the time I reached the east shore of Lake Houston no cyclists crossed my route. I wondered if I was too early, too late, or they rode somewhere else. When I got to FM 2100 my concern was relieved as a few cyclists appeared from the east side of FM 2100. You can see them in the video. I waited there for few minutes but couldn’t see any more in the distance. Later on the west side of the lake while I waited for the traffic light to change a group of 5 or 6 cyclists rode up on the right shoulder and turned onto Atascocita Shores Drive.

I dressed for cool temperatures of 70 degrees but the 99% humidity made for a muggy beginning and I thought the long sleeve jersey was overkill. But I survived as the humidity decreased to 79% at the finish. My jerseys were soaked from sweat. Weather overview: start 70 (humidity 99%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; finish 83 (humidity 79%, dew point 76), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. The dew point accounted for the muggy feeling.

With the road construction on FM 2100 nearing completion the ride count on today’s route is going up. This marked the 11th time of biking it for 2021.
