About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

‘Team Debbie’: How one Houston family exceeded their goals in a bike fundraiser for Alzheimer’s.

Lindsay Peyton | www.houstonchronicle.com

Neil Dougharty, left, Paul Dougharty, and Benjamin Dougharty, right, are shown at Buffalo Bayou Park Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021 in Houston. The brothers along with their dad rode in Texas’ first Ride to End ALZ race on Oct. 10.

Avid cyclist Paul Dougharty can often be found cruising the bike path by his home in the Heights.

He’s also a regular at rides for worthy causes, such as the BP MS 150 and Bike Around the Bay.

When Paul, 67, discovered that the Alzheimer’s Association was debuting the Ride to End ALZ — and the second event would be scheduled in Texas — he quickly signed up and shared it on Facebook.

Then, his son Benjamin Dougharty, 45, saw the post. Benjamin called his dad …

Rice applies for Bicycle Friendly University Designation

By Hajera Naveed | www.ricethresher.org

Rice Transportation Demand Management recently submitted an application for a Bicycle Friendly University designation, after being awarded a bronze designation in 2017. The American League of Bicyclists will announce awards early next year.

According to Lisa Lin, transportation demand management manager, the university’s previous designation expired this year. Since then, the university was able to improve the application with more student engagement activities related to biking over the past few years.

“[In terms of] the programming aspects and encouragement side of things, I feel like we did …

Day 31: Navasota to Shepard, 3,000’ of climbing, 6:20 hrs in the saddle. Another long day in East Texas

Tuesday October 19, 2021, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 1,621 miles (2,609 km) We got an update on Gail this morning, worse than we thought. She’s being transferred to a larger hospital for surgery, apparently some broken bones. Her husband is flying in today from California. Nobody got bit (some dogs tried) or fell off their bike, so a good day. The morning had lots of hills going through Sam Houston state park; surprisingly quite a bit of traffic. …

Day 32: Shepherd to Silsbee. 600’ of climbing, 4:25 hrs saddle time. And then there were 10

Wednesday October 20, 2021, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 1,681 miles (2,705 km) Lost another rider today. Romaine flew back to Boston due to her hand injury. She really hasn’t ridden in over a week since she missed the hill country trying to get a root canal. She couldn’t find good medical attention and needed to see her own doctor back home. Hope this is it for accidents. Today was easy compared to previous days. The only issue is the humidity is very high now and I’m sweating all day. …

Video: Community rallies around Austin’s shoeshine man, surprises him with new electric bicycle

by: Candy Rodriguez | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Dapper from head to toe, Phillip Wiggins has style and he takes pride in looking good when he is working. For the last three weeks, he’s been out of work after his homemade shoeshine cart and bicycle were stolen.

The Army veteran first started his mobile business “Boots Shoes & Pumps” in 2019 after facing several difficult years where he battled alcohol addiction, the loss of his wife and he almost ended up on the streets. He was homeless in terms of the word’s definition. He was a man without a home. However, Wiggins was able to connect with Caritas, which helped him back on the right track and find housing. …

Your guide to San Antonio’s Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System hike and bike trails – all 84 miles of them

Richard A. Marini | www.expressnews.com

As the weather cools and the outdoors beckon, there’s no better place for bike riders than the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System. The 84 miles of wide and smooth hike-and-bike trails have slowly encircled the city like a necklace since construction began in 2007.

The trails are designed so they can be navigated by all but the most inexperienced bike riders. They have mostly gentle slopes, are paved with either concrete or asphalt and usually are wide enough for two bikers to ride abreast.

Most run along the river banks or on utility rights of way, providing a safe …

Humidity Returns, No Local Legend Segments

Texbiker.net Posted on October 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 20, 2021

Before today’s bike ride I looked at a previous ride on the route to see if any Strava Local Legends showed up. I looked at a couple of segments but didn’t see any local legends. The bike ride went north to Tavola, back to US59 and south through Valley Ranch, Oakhurst before returning to Kingwood. I call this my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. To add a little distance I rode some streets at the beginning of the ride that I’ve been skipping when going to the north. The distance came in at 36.32 miles. This was the 2nd longest ride on this route in 2021 out of the 15 times I’ve done it. My week now totals 110.71 miles and I’m only 17 miles away from reaching my 625 mile goal for October. I started at 11:02 AM and finished at 1:51 PM.

10-20-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary fro Today’s Route

The new ICAN Cycling Alpha-50 Disc wheels continue to please me. I can ride at a higher pace than with the Vision 30 wheels they replaced on my Lynskey R300 I rode today. Maybe the “new bike gear” distortion effect is still over me.

As the week progresses the cooler temperatures are gone. Today the humidity was higher than the starting temperature. No long sleeve jersey needed, back to arm sleeves and a short sleeve jersey. Weather conditions: start 77 (81% humidity, 71 dew point), overcast, wind E 8 mph; finish 84 (69% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

What I Did To Become A Local Legend

Texbiker.net Posted on October 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 19, 2021

As I got ready for today’s bike ride an idea came to mind. Last weekend I lost the Strava local legend for the Lake Houston Bridge – EB. Today’s route would go over the bridge. Why not loop back over the bridge and ride it twice and see if I can regain the local legend status. I started the ride at 11:05 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike to go on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route with the additional loop over Lake Houston. I finished at 2:02 PM not knowing if I regain the local legend. It didn’t take long to find out I am now the Strava Local Legend on Lake Houston Bridge – EB. The extra loop added some miles to the ride coming in at 37.94. I’m getting closer to my 625 mile goal for October with 571.73 miles. The week is off to a good start with 74.4 miles so far. Maybe a 200 mile week?

Weather conditions returned to a more SE Texas variety with higher humidity and dew point but the temperature couldn’t get out of the 70’s when I finished the ride. The wind was okay. I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one but I could’ve wore arm sleeves and the short sleeve jersey and been comfortable. What the weather was like: start 73 (67% humidity, 61 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph; finish 78 (68% humidity, 67 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph.

The route is one I ride frequently with today being the 14th time this year. I’ll keep this ride in the same group even though I crossed Lake Houston 4 times.
