The light winds left and so did the blue sky. I rode around Kingwood Streets for today’s bike ride starting at 1:39 PM and finishing at 3:27 PM. At times fighting the wind affirmed my choice of staying close. I rode 21.66 miles making it a 230.93 mile week. Its good to hit 220+ miles after falling short last week.
10-10-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary
For the year this is the 12th time biking on Kingwood streets, about once a month. My Lynskey R300 bike carried me.
10-10-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Kingwood Streets
A front may approach Houston this evening but before that the clouds moved in from the gulf and the wind with them. Weather summary: start 85 (78% humidity, 78 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph gusts 22mph; finish 85 (78% humidity, 77 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 23 mph. After a week of light wind I forgot what it was like to ride in 23 mph gusts.
Kingwood Town Center was blocked off for a car show and other festivities. Watch the video to see a slipper car.
With the Lazer helmet working its way through the warranty process I reverted to the Catlike helmet.
Day 19: Fort Davis to Marathon, 1089’ climbing, 3:53 hrs in the saddle, easiest day so far
Thursday October 7, 2021, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 941 miles (1,514 km)
A great ride to Alpine, a lot of downhill. Really nice terrain. A big Mountian goat jump out in front of me in this area. Tried to get a picture but hard to see.
Day 20: Marathon to Sanderson, 600’ climbing, 3:45 hrs in the saddle. Pretty easy, boring day
Friday October 8, 2021, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 996 miles (1,603 km)
Last night we were treated to a talk on astronomy by a local who lives at the RV park. He pulled out a giant telescope and we saw Jupiter and Saturn. This area gets very dark with no outside lights so there were several other amateur astronomers there as well. This man’s level of knowledge was mind boggling.
Started the day at 5:30 am since I have meal duty today with Romaine. She was very stressed about getting everything set up and we had some “wordsâ€; but we hugged it out and all good now. It’s really a lot of work doing all this work in the dark, relaying on headlamps. After tomorrow I’ll be off cooking and cleaning duty for a week.
Started out fairly flat and cool. After about mile 20 started a slow downhill even there was headwind. …
On Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the San Antonio City Council B session, the city manager and staff will present their recommended list of projects for consideration on the May 2022 municipal bond. After an extensive, public-led review and vetting process, $1.2 billion will be recommended for these projects, with voter approval in May 2022.
San Antonio’s bond only comes along twice a decade and our city can’t afford to miss it or wait for an extensive planning process. We need one fully connected pedestrian and cycling network that links to destinations both on and off our streets. …
My gas powered mechanized hauling device took me and my bike back to Lucy Park today to do some wheel rolling.
In the photo documentation above, we are stopping to consider if it a good idea to ride across that short bridge you see the handlebars pointing to. That bridge looks innocuous enough. However, I have walked across that bridge on previous visits to the Lucy Park Duck Pond and found this bridge a challenge to walk on. It moves up and down and rocks left and right.
I have seen little kids having themselves a mighty fine time on this bridge. I think …

It was a little cooler than I prefer when I started today’s bike ride at 8:51 AM but my arm sleeves kept me comfortable until the sun got higher and warmed up. The route for today was “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” but with a side trip on the way back. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike covering 34.7 miles by the time I finished at 11:37 AM. Those miles made this a 200+ mile week at 209.26 miles. October improved to 271.6 miles towards my 625 mile goal. That’s 43% of the way to the goal.
10-9-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route
Nine times biking today’s route so far in 2021 with today being the longest distance. The side trip came after riding through Walden on the way back to Kingwood. I rode west on Farmingham Road to visit Bike Barn. I have a problem with my Lazer Sphere helmet discoloring and Lazer said the quickest warranty track was to go to a Shimano dealer and Bike Barn in Atascocita was handy. I stopped there, they looked at the helmet, told me what was required to submit a warranty claim. After I finished the ride I took the helmet back with the document they needed and they will submit a request on Monday. Much better than what CompetitiveCyclist.com told me. They said it was my fault for excessive UV light which is hard to avoid wearing the helmet outside in sunlight. You can see the discoloring in the video.
Indian Summer weather prevailed once the sun got high enough to move the temperature up from the 60’s. I was surprised how comfortable I felt at the start wearing shorts, short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves. I knew it would get warmer and didn’t want to overdress. Weather summary: start 67 (99% humidity, 67 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm; finish 82 (68% humidity, 70 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. I didn’t experience much headwind thanks to the light breeze. The only time it was challenging was riding west onto the Lake Houston causeway until traffic passing beside me seemed to block it.
I saw numerous cyclists after turning left off of Atascocita Shores Drive heading east on FM 1960. Not as many as last week but it was great seeing fellow cyclists. You can see them in the video.
Various communities were holding neighborhood garage sales making some streets busier than usual for a Saturday morning. Garage sale customers get out early.
Strava alerted me that I gained Local Legend on Lake Houston Bridge – EB status. That surprises me because of the number of cyclists that ride this segment. But I ride it several times a week. I rode this segment 36 times in the last 90 days according to Strava. Nice.
The Waller County District Attorney’s Office is working to reconstruct the scene and asking anyone with video to come forward.
WALLER COUNTY, Texas — The special prosecutor assigned to investigate a cycling crash in Waller County said he’s investigating this as a possible 2nd-degree felony, a step up from simple assault.
“A motor vehicle can be a deadly weapon and if you recklessly cause injury to somebody that’s classified as a 2nd-degree felony," said Warren Diepraam, the special prosecutor who says he’s dedicated his career to traffic safety prosecution. …
A man walking his bicycle on the Eastex Freeway died in a crash involving three vehicles late Thursday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and OnScene TV.
Calls came in around 11:37 p.m. Thursday about a crash in the 11800 block of Eastex Freeway’s southbound main lanes, according to Sgt. Beaty of the office’s vehicular crimes division. A man, who was walking his bike from the west to the east across those lanes, got hit by a vehicle in the third lane, Beaty said.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Every Wednesday morning, Ana Villalobos shows up at the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center in east Austin and makes her way to a nearby trail. Villalobos is on a mission; she has a goal.
“I like to go fast,†Villalobos said, sitting on her trike ready to go for a bike ride. “It does feel good. The wind in your hair especially on a hot day.†…
The yard signs that popped up along Lake Shore Drive in Wichita Falls Friday have nothing to do with the upcoming city elections. Instead they’re proclaiming the disapproval by some residents of plans to build a portion of the city’s Circle Trail along the shores of Lake Wichita.
Lake Shore Drive resident Randy Ledford said he and a neighbor are footing the bill for the signs, attrubuted to Lake Shore Drive Advocates. Ledford has been one of the most vocal opponents of the trail plan, claiming it would cut too close to the homes of some property owners. The city owns the shoreline around the lake.
Residents of the street and sympathizers have spoken out at recent City Council meetings, most suggesting the trail instead be routed along the street, which they say is already used by runners and cyclists and has been part of the annual Hotter’N Hell bicycle race. …
I rode my bike for half a century (50 miles) on a recent sunny Sunday, the details of which you can see on Strava. Especially if you’re the sort who needs some proof. Or just don’t believe that guy who’s in the same decade of years as miles, with an extra amount of weight, can do that. Although it was challenging given my condition(s), it wasn’t so brutal that I was wrecked the next three days. It’s no work of art (well, the Strava map kinda is), but this snippet of dialog from Seinfeld sums it up well: …
