About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists want a trail connection along Texas 6 at Barker Reservoir, if they can find the funds for it

By Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Bicycling at the intersection of Texas 6 and Briar Forest Drive is an uphill battle in more ways than one, and it’s something Bryan Dotson and Gregg Nady have spent years trying to solve.

Now their idea – a long-sought link – potentially opens up some 55 miles of safe biking routes along Buffalo and Brays Bayous by making a key highway crossing along a dangerous stretch of Texas 6.

They’re just about 1.2 miles and …

AUSTIN, Texas — A well-known Austin bike shop is offering a reward to catch the people behind six burglaries that have occurred over the last six months.

Investigators say thieves stole more than $100,000 worth of goods from Mellow Johnny’s, including a bike owned by Lance Armstrong.

An employee referred KVUE to Dave Amis, a private investigator and owner of StriderPI.com.

“There appears to be no stop, no end in sight,” said Amis. …

Potential Magnetic Solution. Graduation Yard Cards. Cyclists On Route

Texbiker.net Posted on May 25, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 25, 2024

The earliest start this week at 8:36 AM. The Giro d’Italia stage 20 would wait until I got back home. I shortened the usual Saturday Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route by a couple of miles skipping some streets at the beginning. I changed the GoPro mount after yesterday’s broken mount tab with no problems today. Before the ride I found a magnetic mount that might work holding the GoPro for quick release using the BarFly mount parts and ordered 3.

Riding the Cervelo Caledonia and the early start set me up to see other cyclists once I reached FM1960. Along the way I saw several yard announcements of seniors graduating. School is almost over and traffic might reflect that on bike rides. The slightly shorter ride of 32.14 miles still pushed me over 200 miles for the week (224.46 miles) and within 7 miles of May’s mileage goal of 749 miles. Strava alerted me about the Local Legend on Valley Manor to Kwood drive (3:44). Apparently skipping a few streets didn’t keep me from matching previous rides on Strava.

City Strives for “Silver” Bicycle Friendly Status; Complete Streets Policy Drafted

richardsontoday.com

Transportation staff gave an update at Monday’s City Council meeting on the progress of implementing the Active Transportation Plan adopted in 2023, which incorporated key steps recommended by the League of American Bicyclists for Richardson to become more bike-friendly and achieve a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation. The City was awarded a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation in 2015 and 2019.

Nine of 17 key steps outlined have been completed, including the recent establishment of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), and seven steps are in progress, including the drafting of a Complete Streets Policy. The policy is a document that details an agency’s commitment to developing a comprehensive multimodal transportation system that facilitates safe, accessible, comfortable, and convenient mobility for all people and travel modes. The policy includes several required elements, many of which the City already does, creating a …

Teen Entrepreneur Is Selling Texas Bike Park for $3.2 Million

By Greg Heil | www.singletracks.com

The Texas land that Station Mountain Bike Park is built on is for sale for $3.2 million.

Rhett Jones, a high schooler from Texas, made waves in 2023 by fundraising, building, and opening a shuttle-served bike park in the Texas hill country near Austin. Station Mountain Bike Park features an astonishing 20 unique trails with 370 feet of vertical drop, including a jump trail with 75 jumps.

Now, the 130-acre property that the bike park is built on is for sale for $3.2 million.

Jones raised $350,000 for the construction of the trails on the property, but the property itself was purchased by a group of real estate investors “for over $3 million under a secured part-equity locked lease deal,” according to Singletracks writer Richard Shoop. …

Another Route Exploration After 5 years. SR242 – Old Houston Rd – FM1314

Texbiker.net Posted on May 24, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 24, 2024

Back on May 1st when I biked to SH242 I noticed the construction barriers were gone and traffic was on the previously closed lanes. Exploring SH242 was the focus for today’s bike ride. The last time I rode on SH242 was July 8th, 2019. That’s how long construction made riding there not possible. I wasn’t sure the work was finished all the way to Old Houston Road but I wanted to find out. It took a couple searches in SportTracks to find the route name and map to replicate for the ride; SR242 – Old Houston Rd – FM1314. The July 8th ride was 46.01 miles but today I left off about 2 miles riding through Kingwood to US59. From there I followed the same route. I should’ve started earlier than 10:54 AM to avoid some heat. With the longer ride I left the waterbottle at home and took the CamelBak. The bike for the exploration: Canyon Endurace CF 7.

As I rode north on the US59 frontage road I saw the GoPro camera bouncing around a lot more than usual. Looking at the Garmin mount on the GoPro one of the tabs broke off. At first I was going to keep the GoPro in a jersey pocket but that is awkward to get out. The computer mount on the Canyon has GoPro tabs under the computer so I decided to put the GoPro there. No hand video shots but the wireless mic solved the reason I don’t put the GoPro there anymore.

SH242 sports a concrete shoulder about 10 ft. wide. There was a place west of FM1485 where the shoulder narrowed because the new east bound lane aren’t open and a left turn lane used the available space. That was about 100 feet long. I can now put this route back on the list riding both directions. I took this photo at FM1485 and SH242 at the store where I stopped for a short rest break.

The headwind gave me a hard time on FM1314 back to the southeast. I stopped at the Circle K at sorters Road for some PowerAide and leg recovery. Weather: Start 86 degrees, humidity 73%, dew point 76.8, cloud cover 61%, wind SSE 14 mph; Finish 89 degrees, humidity 70%, dew point 78.1, cloud cover 26%, wind SSE 13 mph gusts 19 mph.
