About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dog Sprints, Some Sun Breaks Through, 2nd Time Riding Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 17, 2021

Finally some sunshine broke through the mostly cloudy sky. It didn’t last too long though as the clouds closed ranks after I started the bike ride at 9:54 AM. Warmer than yesterday by a few degrees but not as hot as last week. I looked up a route from 5/29/2020 and decided to ride try and duplicate it but I ended up with a few different streets. But today’s mileage was slightly longer at 39.88 miles. This won’t be a 200 mile week but I am working on at least a 100 mile week with 81.8 miles so far. Missing 3 biking days due to the weather broke my string of 200 mile weeks. I crossed over the 400 mile point for September with 435.52 miles. My 700 mile goal is getting closer.

All Bike Rides Summary for Today's route

For some reason my left knee hurt early in the ride until I stood up and pedaled some as I exited Woodridge Forest. I don’t have knee problems. Maybe my shoes were not in the position they usually are. The cleats have a few degrees of float.

Two dog encounters during the ride. The first one came on Linwood Drive in Woodbranch Village as I neared Railroad Ave. A house on the left had two dogs behind a fence. I only saw one as I pedaled by because of the bushes along the fence. As I neared the stop a sing a small dog darted across the street barking and chasing me. A pickup was in front of me causing me to slow and giving the dog time to get close. The pickup turned left and I sped up turning right with the dog beside me now growling. Once on Railroad Ave. the dog stopped running beside me and I rode away. A near miss. Encounter two happened later at Rock Creek and Northpark drives. I stopped for the traffic light and a dog I have seen there before starting barking at me from a distance. Whenever I looked his direction he started barking but stayed about 30 – 40 feet away. This time another dog was with him but stood silent behind the barking one. He didn’t move but the other one would move towards me when he barked but stayed a “safe” distance. The light changed, I turned right onto Northpark and the barking dog ran along with me but in the grass barking. I’ve noticed on other rides when the dog reached a point where the construction fence dips out he would stop running quickly like a barrier was there. That happened today too. He wants to chase and bark but there is a limit on his travel. I pedaled fast here too.

Riding south on the frontage road from FM 1485 I saw the northbound main lanes traffic backing up, red lights flashing, and 2 ambulances. A truck was laying on its side. You can see this in the video.

Weather summary: start 81 (77% humidity, 73 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph; finish 82 (75% humidity, 73 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph.

Former Marine Kenn Dixon organized the cycling tours. Due to injuries sustained while on active duty, he was limited to the …

Some Mist, Overcast, Cool But Humid Bike Ride To RR Overpass

Texbiker.net Posted on September 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 16, 2021

After 4 days off the bike due mostly to Hurricane Nicholas it was good to be out riding. The overcast sky and 70’s was different from the last bike ride though. I watched two bike races waiting for the weather to improve a little but it didn’t really change. I got ready and my Canyon Endurace wheels rolled at 10:23 AM. To make up for not riding and falling behind on my September goal I chose a longer route, “Kingwood to FM1960 Railroad Overpass – Back”. This marked the 2nd time riding it in 2021. I rode 41.92 miles which put me back ahead of the pace to reach the 700 mile goal. I thought 2021 YTD would lose ground to 2020 YTD but 2021 still leads by 129 miles at 7,169.

The forecast called for low 80’s and maybe some of the clouds lifting but when I finished the ride at 1:32 PM none of that happened. Weather summary: start 75 (91% humidity, 72 dew point), overcast, wind N 8 mph; finish 76 (89% humidity, 73 dew point), overcast, wind NE 8 mph. Arm sleeve were more for comfort than sun protection. I prefer less humidity but this is Houston. Mist fell for early parts of the ride but either it stopped or I rode away from it. The last 2 times I visited Liberty County I got rained on but not today. I was glad to break that streak. Tomorrow may brighten up and warm up.

Time off allowed some rest for my legs. I spun the pedals well even into the headwind crossing Lake Houston going east. I built my overall average speed to 14.1 mph after the u-turn on the railroad overpass but it settled at 14.0 mph for most of the miles back to Kingwood. Then it fell with all of the stops and starts. I forgot the resurfacing of FM 1960 in Liberty County didn’t go all the way to the concrete railroad overpass. About 2/10 of mile were chip and seal. Not too jarring since it was wore down.

Ides Of September Rolling On The Lake Wichita Boardwalk

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

On this Ides of September, day 15 of the 2021 version of such, my backup bike rolled me to the Lake Wichita Boardwalk, and beyond, this morning.

A morning with a slight chill in the air being a welcome harbinger of the arrival of Autumn a week from today.

Work has begun on a section of the Circle Trail at the far west end of Lake Wichita, near Mount Wichita. There had been talk of making this new section of the Circle Trail of the boardwalk type thing you see above.

I suspect the cost of a boardwalk is what has the …

Remembering Reed Murray and Fred Meredith

MichaelBluejay | bicycleaustin.info

Back in the Critical Mass (CM) days, comprised of mostly young riders, two "old guys" (in their 40s/50s) showed up regularly to lend their support: Fred Meredith and Reed Murray.

Fred was a fixture on the CM email list which started in 1993 and which was a precursor to this forum. He was the editor of Austin Cycling News (later Southwest Cycling News) for the now-defunct Austin Cycling Association.

Once on a CM ride, Fred and Reed were riding side by side in a single lane, and a cyclist passed them on the left. So for a second or two they were three-abreast, and a cop ticketed all three of them. That was the kind of harassment we had to deal with in those days. But it just further …
