About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Signaling your intent while bicycling makes you more predictable and reduces your risk of a crash with a driver. When making a left turn, ride in the center or center-left of the lane and signal early to discourage impatient drivers from trying to pass you as you turn. https://t.co/PwHdu8zjv7

Sauna Effect, Huffman Extended Route

Texbiker.net Posted on September 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 2, 2021

It felt like a sauna as I began today’s bike ride at 9:38 AM. The ride went south and east on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route. The extended part took me north of FM 1960 on FM 2100 to Smith Road, west on Smith Road and back to FM 1960 on E Lake Houston Parkway. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. The ride traveled 35.31 miles finishing at 12:29 PM. On Pinewood Bluff Lane another cyclist passed me going the other direction. Later at the church on Fairlake lane several cyclists were in the parking lot. I couldn’t tell if they were getting ready to ride or putting their bikes on the bike racks. I waved as I rode by. This was the 2nd time riding this route in 2021. My week is up to 141.58 miles setting a potential 200 mile week.

The sauna effect came from the high humidity and dew point at the start. The wind was light to calm not helping with cooling. Weather conditions: start 86 (81% humidity, 79 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 4 mph; finish 90 (59% humidity, 74 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Cold water from my CamelBak was good during the ride.

While Strava said the ride was consistent with my usual efforts my legs felt tired. It took a long time to get my average speed to 13 mph. Some of that is the number of stops signs and traffic lights on this route compared to rides to the north.

2021 (unofficial) Dragon Slayer Pre-Ride- Monday, Sept 6th LABOR DAY

By CBaron | austinmountainbiking.com

Hello all,

I say its time to get this party started again!

Every year that I’ve done the Dragon Slayer, I’ve also led an ‘unofficial’ Dragon Slayer (2 lap) pre-ride on Labor Day. So here I am once again planning to jump into the DS this year, so I figured I’d try to keep this tradition going. Honestly my fitness is not really 2-lap worthy right now. But whether it be 1 lap or 2, it would still be a nice day of training and trail beta come Monday, September 6th.

DETAILS: Location: Lake Georgetown Trail (LGT) Time: Monday, 7:45am meet, 8am rollout. Place: Russel Park parking lot, Georgetown Pace: Steady tempo for 2 clockwise laps …

New Month, New Goal, August Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2021

August is in the rearview mirror and September arrived. A new goal for the month of 700 miles. I need to average 23.33 miles per day to make that goal. Today’s bike ride was a good start with 35.35 miles. The began at 9:26 AM and finished at 12:03 PM. For the second time this year I rode what I call the “Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd” route. I rode on my Canyon Endurace bike.

The month changed but the weather not much. Weather conditions: start 87 (75% humidity, 78 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 4 mph; finish 90 (64% humidity, 76 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. More clouds than yesterday. Light wind let me ride in most directions without a strong headwind. Usually biking SE on FM 1314 is into a headwind but not today. (After I was back home it rained for a few minutes, The yard needed it.)

One drawback to riding NW on FM 1314 from Valley Ranch Parkway, several concrete companies spilled rock on the shoulder. A couple of times I rode over chunks of rock that could cause a flat. Thankfully the Continental GatorSkin tires handled them.
