About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rain Cooled New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 28, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 28, 2021

Last night we got about 4/10″ of rain which cooled the weather down slightly for the start of today’s bike ride. In the sun it was hot but the shade felt cool. It began at 10:02 AM as I rode away on my Canyon Endurace bike. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” for the distance it provided. I wanted to get closer to a 200 mile week. I biked 41.59 miles, about average for the 5 times I rode this route in 2021. Those miles moved the week to 110.15 miles and July to 922.27 miles. They also closed the deficit to 2020 to 15 miles. It hasn’t been this close in many week. YTD 2021 is up to 5,683 miles. I could ride 1,000 miles this month.

My legs felt good and the wind was light allowing me to get my average speed up to 14.2 mph for most of the ride back to Kingwood. No other bikers crossed my route except two young boys riding their bikes with fishing poles in Tavola. You can see them in the video. Lots of blue sky though the clouds increased to the south.

Weather conditions: start 85 (70% humidity, 74 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph; finish 89 (58% humidity, 72.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph. It was hot when I finished at 1:28 PM. You can see how much I sweated at the end of the video.

Video: Waco: Is Cameron Park shrinking as a result of private development?

By Gordon Collier | www.kwtx.com

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Tens of thousand of people visit Cameron Park in Waco every year to hike, bike and horseback ride, but some are now concerned the park could be shrinking as the private land around it is developed.

Outdoor enthusiasts have been using trails on that land for years.

With more and more people looking for places to build, and land prices sky high, some of that property is selling.

This is making room for families, but those who use the park regularly are concerned some of their favorite places are disappearing.

รขโ‚ฌล“I almost cried. It really hurts my heart how theyรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre just destroying this. Itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs so beautiful, really rustic and wild. It really hurt,รขโ‚ฌย said Silvia Gallegos, who runs in the park regularly.

One of the trails Gallegos and her friend Michelle Harrell use will soon …

Bike Camp teaches children with special needs to ride bicycles

By Stephanie Ratts Grissom | kdhnews.com

Riding a bicycle is a milestone for any child, with scraped knees and bruised bottoms remembered fondly in adulthood. Many children with special needs, however, have more than the usual obstacles to overcome and so never get the opportunity to reach that milestone or feel the same sense of accomplishment.

Last week, however, a few very special children got the chance to learn how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle for the very first time thanks to a special Bike Camp that was held at the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department.

The iCanShine Bike Camp is …

Back Home, New Axles, Not As Hot Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 27, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 27, 2021

Back in Kingwood after yesterday’s bike ride in Galveston. I started earlier at 10:10 AM and it didn’t feel as hot. But no sea breeze and waves to watch. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike today on the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. I biked 33.43 miles today. The week now totals 68.55 miles. I will need to ride a longer ride to get to a 200 mile week. July is up to 880.68 miles. Today was the 12th ride on this route in 2021. I might get close to 1,000 miles for July.

7-27-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today’s Route

Nothing out of the ordinary on the ride. The construction on FM 2100 shows signs of progress with the base laid for concrete pavement in places. When that is complete the shoulder lane will be back, no need to ride on the “jungle” sidewalk to FM 1960.

It didn’t feel as hot as yesterday. Weather conditions: start 86 (71% humidity, 75.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 5 mph; finish 89 (62% humidity, 74.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm.

I wondered if my legs would be tired today but not the case. I was tired last night and went to bed an hour early.

Before the ride I replaced the original Lynskey thru axles on my R300 with The Robert Axle Project Lightning axles. They look nice, easier to insert and tighten. They use a 6mm hex key to tighten and release. I checked my multi-tool to be sure it had one.

Not Too Hot, Not Too Windy, Not Too Crowded Tour de Galveston Seawall

Texbiker.net Posted on July 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 26, 2021

I thought leaving home at 8:35 AM driving to Galveston would get me there earlier than the ride I did last year on June 19th but I ended up starting today’s bike ride at 10:44 AM only 5 minutes earlier. The plan was to ride the seawall from the East End Beach to the west on FM 3005 turning around at beach access point 12. I did that but I added over 5 miles to last year’s ride. Those miles came from biking on Haborside Drive and the East Beach Road all the way to the end of the road at the beach. Today I biked 35.12 miles.

When I got to the Ferry Road parking lot I found it was reduced in size for construction. I drove into the last open parking slot. I got my Lynskey R300 bike out of the Jeep, put my biking gear on and headed out. The wind was 5 mph unlike last year when it was 12 to 14 mph. Lots of sun and 87 degrees. By the time I finished at 1:44 PM the wind dropped to 3 mph and the temperature was 91. Later while driving home the outside temperature according to my Jeep hit 109 for awhile but I think it might have been a couple of degrees too high. After all of the rain lately this was the first weekday without much of a rain threat. I thought a weekday would be less crowded on the seawall and I think that was the case.

FM 3005 on the west end of the island had construction on the east bound lanes for about a mile or more. Only 1 lane with the other lane getting new asphalt. I didn’t see this until I was about halfway through the zone riding west. So I continued to beach access 12. Turning around there I rode the shoulder to the construction area and pedaled faster on the shoulder through the work zone. Traffic passed but gave me space. About 2/3 of the way through I pulled off at beach access 6 to let the traffic pass while I stood under a building in the shade. About 5 minutes later I went back to FM 3005, waited for a traffic break and pedaled even faster to the end of the work. From there it was about half a mile to the seawall.

Back at the ferry parking lot I looked for the restrooms but the building was off limits. There were some very nice portable air conditioned restrooms though. I changed out of my bike clothes in cool comfort after putting the Lynskey back in the Jeep. Next I drove to Landry’s for lunch and early dinner. My wife and I used to eat there whenever we came to Galveston after Hill’s Restaurant closed. The fried seafood platter was great as was the air conditioning. The drive back home went smoothly until I caught rush hour traffic on I-45 and the I-69/US59 raised road. I was back home around 5:20 PM.

Looking at my Strava activity page I couldn’t count all of the segment medals.
