About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

It’s a totally different view from the top of a mountain bike | Texas Outdoors

Author: Barry Davis | www.kens5.com

If you think you know everything there is to know about riding a bike, and you haven’t tried mountain-biking, get ready for an education!

SAN ANTONIO — I have ridden thousands of miles on a bicycle and thought I knew just about everything was was to know about riding. Then I tried mountain-biking. Boy, did I get an education!

I have always ridden road bikes, but always wanted to try mountain-biking. I had no idea how different and just how tough it is.

With a road bike, it is a nice smooth ride where you’re only really challenged when you come to a significant hill.

Mountain-biking is a …

Up for the challenge

Photo by Jake Przytarski Steve Myhrberg, a New York native, stands behind his bike on Monday during his brief visit to Marshall to visit his brother Phil and their family.

MARSHALL — In the summer of 1981, a 28-year old Steve Myhrberg of Glens Falls, New York set out on a cross-country bicycle trip with his wife Pat in celebration of their eight-year anniversary. The couple went on to make it through the first leg of the tour, which included a stop in Marshall to visit Steve’s brother Phil, but the pair ended up falling just short of their ultimate goal.

Now, 40 years later, the two are back on the road and eager to finish what they started.

“I wanted to do something that was challenging enough where I gave myself a 50/50 …

Bikes and parts are proving hard to find for New Braunfels shops

By Lisa Dreher | herald-zeitung.com

The Chain Link bike technician Erik Rodriguez and owner Seana Rosseau work on one of several bike repairs in the shop. Repairs have been a key part of business as supplies of new bikes have dried up.

With more people buying bikes during the pandemic to get some fresh air, shops everywhere are facing bike and parts shortages while repairs ramp up.

Bike sales rose 78% during the pandemic, according to NPD Group, a market-research firm.

That climb in demand has left shops with backorders on assembled bikes and parts that are expected to last into the fall and perhaps even to next year. Bike repairs

Biked By Previous Home, Closing In On Some Goals

Texbiker.net Posted on July 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 23, 2021

Today I rode my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route with a couple of variations. I started the bike ride at 10:03 AM on my Canyon Endurace bike. The weather was heating up so I should’ve started earlier. But finishing at 12:31 PM avoided the hottest part of the day. The variations were a loop through Brooklyn Trails and later a loop on the street we used to live on in New Caney (see the video). These added to the typical distance which ended up at 32.11 miles. This bumped my week to 187.08 miles setting up tomorrow’s bike ride to put me over the 200 mile mark. July is getting close to my 800 mile goal at 762.45 miles. Today was the 10th ride on this route in 2021. 2021 YTD miles are 5,523. The deficit to 2020 YTD is 73 miles; I’m holding that to double digits.

7-23-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

My legs felt stronger today than yesterday. I built my overall average speed up to 14.1 mph and held it there for awhile. Hopefully they are the same or better on tomorrow’s bike ride.

The rainy weather is taking a break and heating up for today and the next couple of days. An early start on Saturday is a good idea. The CamelBak is getting a workout keeping my water cold until the end of the ride. Today’s weather for the bike ride: start 86 (77% humidity, 78 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; finish 90 (62% humidity, 75.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph.

He Turned to Cycling To Lose Weight in Order to Donate a Kidney

By tim connor, as told to Emily Shiffer | www.bicycling.com

“It has been so rewarding to see friends and co-workers take their health seriously because of my story.”

Name: Tim Connor Age: 45 Hometown: Tyler, Texas Occupation: Consultant Time Cycling: Just over one year Reason for Cycling: As a high school graduation present, my parents purchased me a Redline cross bike that survived several moves and neglect over 25 years. Last summer, I needed to lose weight during the pandemic in order to donate a kidney. With all of the local fitness centers shut down, I put air in the tires, oiled the chain, and started riding my bike on the local trail.

I am a busy guy, raising two teenagers, and volunteering at my church and other local non-profits. But I didn’t pay attention to my weight and didn’t exercise consistently. Occasionally, I would join a group of friends to work out, but I would …

More than 300 cyclists returned for ‘Burn Your Buns’ bike ride

Margie Taylor | www.yourconroenews.com

More than 300 cyclists took to the streets and through the rolling hills of Willis and Conroe early on Fourth of July morning for the 17th Annual “Burn Your Buns ” bike ride to benefit Bridgewood Farms.

Riders aged 10 to 85 rode the 20, 31 or 62-mile (loop twice) course along tree-lined streets and rolling hills in Willis. Many participants “doubled the fun” by going down and out twice to cover the 62 miles. Most participants were returning after making this a tradition year after year.

No Rain 2 Days In A Row, What Happened?

Texbiker.net Posted on July 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 22, 2021

I don’t know how to handle biking two days in a row without getting rained on. That is out of the ordinary for July. But I will give it a shot. After watching stage 3 of The Tour of Wallonie on GCN+ I rolled my Lynskey R300 out the door and down the driveway at 10:21 AM. The route for today was the one I attempted on Tuesday but turned back when rain came between me and Ramsey Road as I headed east on Old Atascocita Road (Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman). Today I made it all the way to Ramsey road. The 38.39 miles set me up for a 200 mile week if the weather forecast holds true. My week now totals 154.97 miles. July stands at 730.35 miles, just 70 miles to reach my 800 mile goal. This was the 5th time biking this route in 2021. If I add in 1 bike ride where I didn’t go back through Huffman the ride count is 6. That ride was about a mile and a half shorter.

7-22-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today's Route
7-22-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today’s Route

Today’s distance is about average for the rides. My average speed was lower today. I think my legs were tired from yesterday’s bike ride. I couldn’t seem to get my speed above 15 mph for very long. Yet Strava says this ride was harder than my usual efforts. I was not expecting that.

In the video I talk about replacing the thru axles on my Lynskey bike after watching a YouTube video last night. I have not been able to take the axles out and put them back on as easily as the ones on my Canyon bike. The man in the video called them “wonky” and said he was going to replace them with Robert axles. I agree with the wonky assessment. I found the Robert Axle Project website and ordered front and rear axles. Unlike most bike parts they shipped today. I am looking forward to putting them on my Lynskey R300 bike. My only other wish for the Lynskey is internal cables but that is not easily changed.

Lots of clouds during today’s bike ride. A couple of times I thought there might be one or two with rain but nothing came of that. Overall weather conditions for today’s bike ride: start 86 (76% humidity, 77.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 89 (57% humidity, 71.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. It seemed hotter today. I stopped at the bridge on Ramsey Road for about 10 minutes to rest and eat a cereal bar. I needed some fuel to get back home. The headwind on the way back when riding west taxed my legs but I was able to improve my overall average speed to 13 mph. Lower than yesterday.

No other bikers along the route today.
