About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Residents weigh in on pros, cons of e-bikes on The Woodlands Township pathways

By Vanessa Holt | communityimpact.com

With more than 220 miles of pathways, trails and sidewalks in its boundaries, The Woodlands has an ample supply of facilities for recreational use for those who want to walk, bike or use other nonmotorized devices to get from one place to another.

As e-bikes, or motorized bicycles, grow in popularity, however, the township is seeking public feedback on whether it should alter that policy to allow the vehicles to be used in their motorized capacity.

The township would need to …

Biking across San Antonio stops at a mural aimed at promoting awareness of the COVID-19 vaccine.

daviddalpe | texasnewstoday.com

San Antonio – Art and Movement-This is the latest creative way the city of San Antonio is encouraging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Jeff Moore, founder and leader of SATX Social Ride, said:

According to Moore, you need to be vaccinated with COVID-19 to safely return to normal.

“So it makes more sense for all of us to spread the word and get people vaccinated sooner,” Moore said.

That’s why Moore said it’s easy for SATX Social Ride to partner with the city of San Antonio to ride a vaccine mural bike that starts at …

No Rain On Radar, July Trying To Be Normal

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 13, 2021

For a change no rain on the weather radar as I started the bike ride. The ride began at 9:48 AM and finished at 12:20 PM. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I set out on my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route for the 10th time in 2021. Today I biked 33.12 miles, the typical distance. I’m off to a good start for the week now totaling 81.44 miles. July is over the halfway point to my 800 mile goal with 422.92 miles. I am ahead of the pace to reach my goal by 87 miles (800/31=25.8 miles per day times 13 days = 335.48 miles).

Austin cyclists flag mobility, safety concerns in newly installed bike lanes

by: Kelsey Thompson | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Native Austinite Brian Nunnery has spent the past 10 years as a permanent bike commuter. He says a decade of time spent solely riding a bike to work has revealed evolutions in Austin’s cycling mobility — as well as some personal frustrations with city biking infrastructure.

“I think that cyclists are often second class — you know, we have a transportation system that is designed with cars being the dominant class in the social, almost caste system of transportation types,” he said. “I think if you want to understand what systemic injustice means, ride a bike full time. Because …

Thieves Drive Truck Through Front Door of The Peddler Bike Shop in Austin, Texas

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

There’s been a lot of bicycle theft showing up in my Next Door feed over the last year. Global pandemics with their concomitant economic hardships have put all kinds of strain on people. But this brazen act takes the cake. Robbers literally broke through the front door of The Peddler Bike Shop in Hyde Park area of Austin, Texas with a probably stolen truck. I happened to see it on the website for the news station where I get my weather, and I was aghast. It is the closet shop to me, and I’ve been going there longer than any shops here. I also know the owner a bit. (Ironically, my first real bike that I ever bought myself I got from here, was stolen on Xmas Eve maybe 10 years ago.) This …

Rain Zigged, I Zagged, Searched For Greenway Extension

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2021

Riding west on Hamblen Road I looked to my right above the trees at the dark sky. Not again, another rainy Monday. I was on my way to the Spring Creek Greenway for today’s bike ride. A person commented after I rode the greenway the last time that a new section opened to the west. I wanted to bike there and check it out. I left home at 9:54 AM riding my Canyon Endurace bike. I shortened the beginning of the ride anticipating some extra miles if this new section was there.

As I entered the I-69/US59 trailhead the dark clouds to the west looked threatening. I hoped to ride to Jesse Jones Park before it rained. Arriving at Jesse Jones Park the rain held off and the sky to the west looked less threatening. Maybe I missed the rain. Back home it rain as I found out when I finished at 2:02 PM and my home weather station recorded .18″ of rain. Not stopping on the greenway the dark clouds and wind dropped the temperature a few degrees. Around mile marker 4 to marker 5 light rain fell but with all of the trees not much landed on me.

I kept on biking through the Carter Park trailhead, John Pundt Park, and Dennis Johnston Park on the way to I-45 in search of the new trail. The greenway was dry except for a few low spot where puddles formed. Passing mile marker 15 I started looking for signs of the new section. My expectations drooped when I saw the sign saying the trail ended in one mile. Watch the video to see what I found out.

Not many people on the greenway today. A dozen or so bikers and maybe half that number walking or jogging. I passed two bikers on the way west and said hello. Later on the way back I stopped at John Pundt Park for a rest stop. I planned on staying 15 minutes but it lasted longer. As I was getting ready to leave the same two bikers pulled under the cover and got off their bikes. We chatted for a minute or two before I said goodbye and rode away.

After that I didn’t see many bikers. At the I-69/US59 trailhead I stopped and took this picture.

7-12-2021 Bike Ride Spring Creek Greenway

The 6 cars at the trailhead when I entered had diminished to just 2. The last half mile to the trailhead had more puddles than when I started so the rain that missed me fell there.

Normally I bike the greenway once a month but this month I rode it twice. Below is a summary of the rides there this year. The rides less than 48 miles did not go all the way to I-45.

Weather condition summary: start 77 (84% humidity, 72.1 dew point), overcast, wind S 5 mph; finish 84 (77% humidity, 75.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph.

With the cooler weather and maybe the threat of rain I set some personal records and other notable results according to Strava. The image below only shows a partial list of the medals. (Click on the image to got my Strava activity)
