About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Snakedoctor was kind enough to invite me on a ride this morning, and he always has “a little plan.”😉 I was hoping to ride to QuickDraw Coffee and back, but that wasn’t the plan. I have only ridden out to Paradise Canyon with Jeff, and it is always extremely hard over the #TexasCobbles with a lot of climbing. Very happy that my Enve’s held up, And I’m quite certain I could not have finished the ride with such a high average speed without them. I also couldn’t have finished without Mark Cianci dragging me back to Jeff & Jacob. As always, I am most thankful to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who continues to bless me more than I could ever hope or dream, and definitely more than I deserve.

Got Drift Video Working, Stretched Editing Skills, Surprise Early Ride Start

Texbiker.net Posted on July 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 17, 2021

I surprised myself by starting today’s bike ride at 7:58 AM. This proves I can do it when it isn’t an organized bike ride. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden”. This my favorite bike ride on Saturday because I usually see other bikers. Today was number 14 in 2021. I saw other bikers but not as many as on previous Saturdays.

With the earlier start I finished the ride at 10:18 AM, a time before I start many bike rides. The weather had not reached 80 degrees yet but the humidity was 99% and the dew point was just below the 77 degree temperature. Those numbers meant a muggy ride until the sun got higher in the sky and the humidity going down some. During the ride when I dipped my head to the left several drops of sweat fell to the ground. Good thing I wore a Headsweat band to keep it out of my eyes.

At the start of the ride I needed 13 miles to gather a 200 mile week. I biked 31.29 miles covering the 13 miles and getting the week to 218.66 miles. That averages 36.44 miles per ride well above the 25.8 miles I need to average to reach my 800 mile goal for July. July totals 560.15 miles leaving 240 miles to the goal. This the 8th week in a row of 200+ miles.

Using my Drift Ghost XL camera I recorded the bike ride until I made the u-turn east of FM 2100 and returned to the crossroad. I recorded screenshots of my Bolt computer during that time. Those two videos were merged with three additional GoPro clips, 1 at the beginning of the ride and 2 after the main video stops. I’m working on my video editing skills. I think the Bolt computer screenshots sync closely with the Drift video.

Academy Sports + Outdoors recalls Ozone 500 girls and boys Elevate bikes

www.bicycleretailer.com

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Academy Sports + Outdoors is recalling some Ozone 500 girls and boys Elevate 24-inch bikes because of a fall and injury hazard.

The hazard involves the rear shock spring, which can become stuck and create a pinch point between the spring and the seat, posing an injury risk, or causing the bicycles to stop unexpectedly and creating a fall hazard to the rider. The retailer has received one report of a person injuring their hand under the seat when the rear shock spring compressed.

The recall involves about 3,860 bikes that have "Ozone 500" printed on the frame. The girls …

Tired Legs, Harder Effort Than Usual, Shorter Ride For July

Texbiker.net Posted on July 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 16, 2021

In a bid to start earlier and finish before the afternoon rain could catch me I rolled away on today’s bike ride at 9:43 AM. I decided to watch stage 19 of the Tour when I got back. The bike for today’s ride was my Lynskey R300. I chose my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. On the return to Kingwood as I rode south on Valley Ranch Parkway I had to alter the route because a concrete truck blocked the lane and I didn’t want to wait. A couple of cars waiting were turning around and I figured they waited awhile. That may be the reason today’s distance was a little shorter than my average for this route on the 9 trips in 2021.

7-16-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
7-16-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

With today’s 30.64 miles I am in a good position to hit a 200 mile week on tomorrow’s bike ride. The week now totals 187.37 miles. July got to less than 300 miles to my 800 mile goal with 528.85 miles. I missed one biking day so far in July and average 35.26 miles per ride. To meet my goal I need to bike 25.81 miles per day. I am ahead of that pace (412.9 miles) by almost 116 miles. Can I keep this pace for the rest of July? If I can is a 1000 mile month possible?

Weather conditions continue below a normal July. Some clouds looked like they contained rain during the ride. Getting above 90 degrees has not happened. After the ride I could hear thunder. I finished at 12:16 PM and avoided getting caught in the rain. Weather for the bike ride: start 84 (78% humidity, 76.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; finish 86 (70% humidity, 75 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Humidity makes for a muggy ride, almost like in the rain.

My legs felt tired today. No zip and though the wind wasn’t that strong on the ride south back to Kingwood keeping my speed above 15 mph was a struggle. Strava says today’s ride was harder than my usual efforts. I agree. (Click the Strava image to go to the activity)
