20 Degree Drop, Cool Weather Gear, Local Legends

Weather delayed the start of today’s bike ride as I waited for the temperature to move towards the high for the day of 74. I gave up and decided to pull cool weather clothing from the back of the closet. I thought the cool biking days were done until fall but not the case. I wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I rolled away on my Lynskey R300 bike at 12:23 PM following my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route. For a second or two I was tempted to wait longer but my confidence in getting warmer wasn’t high.

While waiting I watched stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia and stage 1 of The Tour of Hungary.

Yesterday evening a cool front that lingered north of Houston finally moved through lowering the temperature after a brief rain. It hung around dropping the temperature 20 degrees from yesterday’s high. Weather when I started and finished: start 66 (88% humidity, 62.6 dew point), overcast, wind N 9 mph; finish 69 (81% humidity, 63.1 dew point), overcast, wind N 12 mph. Biking north the chilly headwind emphasized why I like it in the 80’s and 90’s. After the turn at Caney Creek the tailwind helped me set a good pace back to Kingwood. The wind didn’t feel so chilly then.

I didn’t want to fall behind on the way to a 200 mile week and then need to catch up later in the week. Today’s 31.34 miles increased the week to 113.7 miles reducing the need for a 40+ mile ride.

A result of today’s ride was getting two “Local Legend” awards from Strava.

A new 15 mile trail system in southeast Amarillo is underway

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – A new 15-mile hike and bike trail system at the Rick Klein Sports Complex in Amarillo is underway.

Six Pack Outdoors has built about six miles of the trail so far and it’s already open to whomever wants to use it.

They are working on adding technical features, bridges and several water crossings to the trail.

“Over the next three to four months were going to be finishing up the trail system out here. When we get that finished were going to start working on a skills area for people to develop a mountain bike and bike handling skills out here that’ll have some wooden features and some dirt features on it,” said Geoff Hall, a director at Six Pack Outdoors.

Video: Texas cyclist tasered after running red light

Video has gone viral of a cyclist being tasered by police close to a university campus in Texas after the rider went through a red light – although the police department involved, described as “Campus Cowboys,” say that the widely shared footage doesn’t show the full story.

The incident, which also saw the cyclist being tackled to the ground, happened last Wednesday lunchtime on University Drive near the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, around 80 miles northwest of Houston, reports Kbtx.com (link is external).

A College Station Police Department patrol car followed the cyclist through a junction, whereupon the rider turned round and was confronted by an officer who, as he pulled him from his bike, said: “You’re under arrest.” …

Route Plans A and B Not Enough Biking Into Liberty County

I started today’s bike ride with plan A and plan B routes but ended up riding plan C. I thought by now the resurfacing of FM 1960 in Liberty County would be far enough east that I could at least bike to the railroad overpass (Plan A) or to FM 686 (Plan B). But when I entered Liberty County it didn’t take long to see I wasn’t going to be able to ride either of those causing me to switch to Plan C, my “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route. The original routes were over 40 miles and I wanted to ride that far on the route I switched to but I wasn’t sure the distance would get there. I ended up riding 40.49 miles. This put the week’s total at 82.37 miles. I wanted to get a head start on a 200 mile week because Wednesday’s weather forecast includes rain, especially north of I-10. Unlike last week I plan on biking if the rain passes through by noon.

This was the 4th time biking this route in 2021. The other three rides took less time, had higher average speeds, average power.

My legs weren’t that great battling the wind today. I knew it would be a windy bike ride and I was headed into it. I started at 11:01 AM which allowed enough time for the wind to get going. It felt like a windy day at the beach with plenty of sun despite being mostly cloudy. What the weather was like: start 85 (67% humidity, 73,2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph; finish 86 (62% humidity, 71.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph gusts 27 mph. Shorts, short sleeve jersey and sunscreen were the attire for the bike ride. While I battled this weather earlier I watched stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia with rain and cold temperatures.

On the ride back to Kingwood a tailwind helped some but the trip across Lake Houston was rough with the wind moving the Canyon Endurace bike around. I saw three other cyclists earlier before I reached the east side of Lake Houston as I rode east. I stopped for ice at the Texaco station on FM 2100 at Wolf Road. I rested a few minutes to get my legs ready for the ride south on FM 2100 into the wind.

Midland – Sterling City: The horizon is moving

Friday May 7, 2021, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 596 miles (959 km) Probably the longest day of the trip in terms of mileage, but there have been harder ones. I was worried about two lanes and no shoulders in the Midland traffic, but then remembered that it’s 7:30 AM on a Saturday; there is no traffic. The day started with a crosswind, edging ever so gently into a quartering wind with a piece behind me. I ate some real estate, averaging just under 13 mph for the day. It was up into the 90’s under a fireball sun.

Saturday May 8, 2021, 66 miles (106 km) – Total so far: 662 miles (1,065 km) I took a detour from the route to visit the Aviator Wind Project, on a wild mesa northwest of Water Valley. Zach Speary, the site manager for CMS Energy, was gracious enough to take part of his Mother’s Day to drive me around this vast facility.
