About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Houston cyclists paint bike lanes where the city won’t

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

The Harrisburg Rail Trail just … ends. Cyclists want it to stretch further through dedicated bike lanes.

Shel Silverstein’s "Where the Sidewalk Ends" should be Houston’s official book of poetry.

At least, if it’s changed to "Where the Bike Lane Ends."

That’s a problem around Houston, with long stretches of hike and bike trails often dead-ending into busy roadways – kicking walkers and bike riders to the street where cars and trucks dominate the mode of transportation. …

I Got The Drift On This Bike Ride, Calm Wind For A Change

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2021

I waited and waited for the fog to lift and the temperature to go up a few more degrees before starting today’s bike ride at 12:38 PM. Because of the later start I changed my planned route for the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. I was going to ride a longer route but I biked 30.4 miles on this one. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike without any sign of another flat tire like I had on Friday’s bike ride.

Other than the slow clearing fog the weather was on the cool side by my standards. The forecast called for a high of 83 but when I finished the ride at 2:55 PM it was not close to that. Weather conditions: start 68 (94% humidity, 65.8 dew point), fog/overcast, wind W 6 mph; finish 71 (87% humidity, 66.9 dew point), overcast with haze, wind NE 3 mph. Not fighting a double digit headwind was nice today. I did dress for cool temperatures with shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. Towards the end of the bike ride I wanted to wear a regular long sleeve jersey but too late then.

Saturday I received a new video camera that I thought would be better in some ways than the GoPro cameras I have been using. Today I used it for the first time. I think the video was good and the audio was louder than the GoPro’s but with too much gain making it scratchy. I adjusted the audio some. This is the first video where the audio has been too loud. The new camera is the Drift Ghost XL with an external mic.

  • 3-15-2021 Drift Ghost XL Camera-1
  • 3-15-2021 Drift Ghost XL Camera-2
  • 3-15-2021 Drift Ghost XL Camera-3
  • 3-15-2021 Drift Ghost XL Camera-4

I had to get creative on attaching the external mic to the camera body. Generally it worked with the rubber tire tube piece keeping the mic from moving around too much when I pulled the rig from my jacket pocket to record. I need to improve that. The Drift offers a longer battery live, smaller size that GoPro with the microphone adapter, easy rotation of the lens for different angles. It doesn’t have as many video resolution options. The sound from the Drift once I get the right sensitivity setting appears to be good.

Without the strong winds from the previous rides I powered through the ride with a Strava segment personal record.
