About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

An Overseas Bike Trip Inspired This Woman to Start Cycling More

Age: 55
Occupation: Planning Analyst
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Time Cycling: 10 years
Highest Weight: 153 pounds

Reason for Cycling: The community aspect outweighs everything else. The fitness is fun, but the community is really nice.

In 2009, I went on an overseas bike and barge trip in Holland with a few girlfriends. Before that trip I hadn’t ridden much, but we rode for seven days in a row. I had so much fun, I wanted to continue biking regularly. At this point, I lived in Redondo Beach, California, so it was pretty easy for …

… Street and sidewalk repairs are wrapping up and median reflectors are being installed at subdivision entrances along Lantana Trail.

A construction project to alleviate erosion along the hike and bike trail behind Azalea is expected to commence this spring.

Exploratory plans are underway to potentially extend the Lantana Hike and Bike Trail though Copper Canyon to connect to the Highland Village trail system.

Zwift – Greater London Flat With A 15% Climb Thrown In

Texbiker.net Posted on January 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 8, 2021

Today I moved away from Watopia to London. I landed on the ZHCC TGI Friday 1.5 ride starting at 12:30 PM and riding for 60 minutes on the Greater London Flat course. I emphasize “Flat” which it was except for the 15% climb up out of the below ground London subway tunnel. I stood on the pedals to crawl up the mountain at 3 mph. I wasn’t alone on that climb. fortunately it didn’t last long and we returned to flat terrain. Overall I rode 19.5 miles gaining 518 feet in elevation. This is the longest ride in Zwift since I resumed in December 2020. Outside the 50 degrees signaled I made a good choice.

Looking at the profile in Strava the course looks relatively flat but SportTracks shows it to be much more “lumpy”. The SportTracks profile is below and the Strava version below that. There are 3 London courses with similar names: Greater London Flat (route I rode today), Greatest London Flat (which may include more climbing but avoids Box Hill), and Greater London 8. When I opened Zwift the option to choose London Courses did not appear so I guess I only ride them if in an event there. I am at level 17 so maybe higher levels can ride in London on their own.

Another ride capturing a bunch of medals according to Strava: 16 bronze and 3 silver. In the sprint I came in 42nd out of 112. There more than 171 in our group. This ride was more my speed because I stayed with the group for the whole ride, busted through the fence numerous times but returned behind it in time to not get removed and mounted a sprint at the finish with a bunch of other Zwifters.

Watopia Sand and Sequoias, Not 56 Degrees

Texbiker.net Posted on January 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 7, 2021

I looked for a route in Zwift called Fuego Flats but couldn’t find it so I chose the Watopia Sand and Sequoias Route. Starting at 11:38AM the route said 12.5 miles and 575 ft of climbing. I ended up riding 12.75 miles with 571 feet of climbing in 43:20. I wasn’t alone with 15,434 other Zwifters online. Not sure if they were on the same course, in Watopia, or all of Zwift.

Outside the weather was sunny but only 56 degrees. Since that is below my threshold of 60 I stayed inside to ride in Zwift.

The route started out flat but at 6.32 miles the hills began going mostly up until 10.61 miles. From there to the finish it was downhill with a few undulations. The climbs were 4% to 6% except for a couple of 8% and 9% short ones. I rode with various groups until the hills began where I was along except for passing. This was not an event, just me biking the course. The profile is below the Strava map. I earned 8 bronze medals over the ride. As far as I know this is the first time I rode this specific course though I have bike pieces of it.
