The community of Paris strikes again as a fundraiser climbs to a $20,000 goal for Pump Track Paris as they name the grandstands in honor of local cycling enthusiast Casey Ressler. They completed the track several months ago. However, the full vision includes added amenities such as raised grandstands and lighting, making the track the perfect destination for large events for years to come.

FATAL CRASH IN PORTER

Law Enforcement officers are on the scene of a train vs pedestrian crash on the tracks along Loop 494 between Royal Purple Drive and Ford Road. The train vs bicycle crash happened possibly close to 7 am when the train conductor thought something was struck. When they stopped on Aldine Bender and Old Humble to inspect the train they realized they had struck something and notified Harris County who in turn notified Montgomery County. There are no traffic delays in the area.

At 7:24 am Montgomery County received a call from Harris County stating they had a train that was stopped at Aldine Bender and Old Humble Road that had struck a man and bicycle in the area of Ford Road and the tracks in Porter. HOUSTON — The driver of an SUV struck and killed a man who was riding his bicycle in West Houston on Tuesday evening. The driver fled the scene of the crash, which took place at the intersection of Westheimer Road and Fondren Road in City Council District F (Council Member Tiffany Thomas) and Harris County Precinct 3 (Commissioner Tom Ramsey).

Stayed Inside to Zwift, Turning Down An Outside Bike Ride

This was an unusual bike ride choice today. The weather outside was good for biking but I decided to go Zwifting instead. I checked the upcoming events and chose the ZZRC Sub 2.0 Ride starting at 12:40 PM. The course was the recently released Beach Island Loop but rather just one loop the ride went 60 minutes. For a change my Bluetooth dongle and the sensors talked to each other without disconnecting at the start. This time I used the dongle in place of the built-in Bluetooth in my desktop computer.

Later today a front will arrive making the next several days Zwifting days.

I got on my Blue Norcross AL bike a couple of minutes before the ride began to warm up and test the sensors. At the start I went out with the group and stayed with them until about 7 minutes into the ride when they rode away from me. I was close to the yellow beacon and then I wasn’t. The “Sub 2.0” is supposed to mean staying below 2.0 w/kg which I did but I could see those ahead of me producing more than 2.0 w/kg. I upped my power to 3.0 w/kg but I didn’t close the gap probably because I was out of the draft. With that I settled into my pace for the rest of the ride. I didn’t see the fence in front of the leader which I think ups the pace. 301 people registered for the ride with over 11,000 riders on the course.

While I lost contact with the group I collected numerous segment medals according to Strava: 14 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. The Beach Island Loop is relatively flat with 361 feet of climbing in the 17.2 miles I rode. My average climbing speed was 13.1 mph and I stayed in the same gearing I used on the flats and downhills.

Mini Dana Peak Bike Fest April 9th-11th

I really miss going to the Desert Fests in Big Bend. So much fun. Ride, socialize in the evening, repeat the next day. But I don’t miss the 16 hour round trip drive to get there!

So a group of us are replicating that experience at Dana Peak on Friday April 9th to Sunday April 11th. Man on bike dies after being hit by SUV

WACO, Texas — A 66-year-old Waco man was hit and killed by a car while riding his bicycle. Officers say Tim Eaton was hit just before 5 p.m. on January 2 on the 8700 block of Chapel Road.

Witnesses told police that Eaton pulled out of the parking lot of a bank and rode across the flow of traffic. A woman driving an SUV hit him, then got out and stayed with Eaton until he was taken away by paramedics. At this time, no charges have been filed against her.

Eaton was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Cyclist killed by driver in west Houston hit-and-run

A bicyclist was hit and killed Tuesday by a driver who fled the scene in west Houston, according to authorities.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Fondren and Westheimer.

The driver of an SUV and the cyclist both had been traveling north on Fondren Road. The driver turned right onto Westheimer and struck the cyclist, who was crossing the intersection, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing. No further description of the suspect’s vehicle was available.

Bike Ride South and East to FM 2100

A slow start on today’s bike ride. I kept waiting for the temperature to go a degree or two higher but finally it seemed the plateau arrived. I got dressed, gathered all of the items and rolled the Canyon Endurace out the back door. At the end of the driveway I pressed the start button on my bolt computer at 12:09 PM. My route for today headed south and east on what I call “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100” By the 2:54 PM finished I rode 34.8 miles. Those miles put me in good shape for reaching my mileage goal for January, How I stand on goals so far in 2021.

1-5-2021 Goal Status Miles

Weather conditions: start 66 (49% humidity, 46.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 13 gusts 17 mph; finish 70 (43% humidity, 46.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 10 mph. I dressed differently from yesterday with the temperature a few degrees lower: shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and half finger gloves. Once I warmed up I felt comfortable but the shade and wind tried to chill me.

This was the 3rd time biking this route combining 2020 and 2021. I altered the start by riding through Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, North Woodland Hills and South Woodland Hills before reaching Bear Branch Village. I chose these villages to avoid duplicating streets at the end of the not thinking that I would duplicate streets when I reached FM 2100 and returned to FM 1960. The reason I didn’t ride north on FM 2100 was to avoid the construction. I figured the crews might be at the northern end of the new concrete making it difficult to walk around the parked equipment. I saw 2 other cyclists, one I missed in the video at Atascocita Shores Drive & FM 1960 and the other on Old Atascocita Road in the video.
